Yippee Ki Yay Motherf*cka

on the low, i'm working on a book called 100 Movies That Should Be Comics about movies that need to have their universes adapted in comics (instead of the other way around). well, i might hafta call it 99 Movies That Should Be Comics instead, 'cause Boom Studios has announced that it will publish a prequel to Die Hard as a comic book series titled Die Hard: Year One.

The prequel series, which drops in August, focuses on a young rookie McClane over a decade before the original Die Hard. set against the backdrop of the '76 Bicentennial Celebration, expect explosions, a high body count and a young J-mac droppin' the F bomb! this is the kind of thing that could help comics out a lot (and it wouldn't hurt the movie industry either!)...

I just read a DOOOPE article on African-American Comics publisher Bertram A Fitzgerald on the Museum of Uncut Funk Blog... peep:
"During the decade in which he produced 16 volumes of Golden Legacy Comics, Bertram A Fitzgerald left a legacy of his own, comprising of the most successful series of Afrocentric comics to date. The Golden Legacy comics are thoroughly professional in their writing, art, and production values, and full of enough historical surprises to interest adult readers presented in a package accessible to younger readers." i encourage you to get familiar here.

DC Comics is bringing the Milestone Characters into their mainstream universe (i reserve judgement on that until i read some books), and to set the table, they are reprinting some of the original Milestone books in Trade Paperback format! the first horse out the gate is Dwayne McDuffie, John Paul Leon, and Robert Washington III's Static Shock: Rebirth of the Cool. i have no problem recommending Static, one of the best comics of it's time... you definitely need to cop this! Bow to the WOW!

if you're in the mood for a romantic comedy that's heavier on the comedy than the romance, check out a hilarious comic called The Dog Years! when Trey, a twenty something toy designer, suffers a catastrophic break-up from his slightly overbearing (and more than slightly hot) fiance, his boys swoop in, determined to stop the pity-party before it even starts. once he hooks up with his boy, the crazy-as-hell dread Rasheed, you know something's about to jump off!
Writer/Artist Drayonis has created a prototype for a great cable show with a cast of characters any sitcom would be happy to have. The art is strong and he writes with a good balance of dating philosphy and comedy that's not afraid to be raunchy when appropriate. the main character's boys seem stereotypical at times, but each one finds his own voice. although the book spends a lotta time on the boys' attempts to drag Trey over to the dark side, the book offers ample coverage of the women's side of the battle of the sexes too! with all the comedy and sexual punch this book flaunts (Drayonis sure can draw some fine women... DAMN!), it also has some effective depth, which was a pleasant surprise. while we can expect to see the books printed eventually, Drayonis has 5 issues (with #6 on the way) of The Dog Years available to read free online... i suggest you do so, and feel free to let us know what you think!

I Am Malcolm X

i just finished reading this great biography of Malcolm X yesterday. not being a Muslim myself, i still can't see how any black person (especially a black man) can resist feeling a swell of pride at the mention of Malcolm. He remains one of the strongest examples of black masculinity ever seen in American culture, and the arc of his public persona across the length of his career is fasciniating. the way he changes his position on race based on his pilgrimage to Mecca stands as an example of how one should react when confronted with the truth.
the author Andrew Helfer is elegant in his narration and adaptation of quotes for dialogue, and does a good job of letting pictures be worth their thousand words whenever possible. artist Randy DuBurke is good at capturing likenesses and like a film biographer, does a great job of portraying the emotions in scenes that were not privy to the public eye. we are reminded that Malcolm, though he was and remains a giant of history, was a living, breathing, vulnerable man like any other. his greatness comes not from super-power, but from the inner strength of his convictions. this is a great, great book.
peace,

Comicbook World #28

Okay, try to follow me... Comics writer Mark Sable writes a book for BOOM! Studios called Unthinkable about a government thinktank that comes up with worst-case terror scenarios. hyjinx ensue when they start to see those scenarios come true. so dude was detained at the airport by TSA, who read the script (for a company called BOOM!) and weren't sure what was real and what was fiction...

“The minute I saw the faces of the agents, I knew I was in trouble. The first page of the Unthinkable script mentioned 9/11, terror plots and the fact that the (fictional) world had become a police state. The TSA agents then proceeded to interrogate me, having a hard time understanding that a comic book could be about anything other than superheroes, let alone that anyone actually wrote scripts for comics.
“I cooperated politely and tried to explain to them the irony of the situation. While Unthinkable blurs the line between fiction and reality, the story is based on a real-life government think tank where a writer was tasked to design worst-case terror scenarios. The fictional story of Unthinkable unfolds when the writer’s scenarios come true, and he becomes a suspect in the terrorist attacks."
Dick Cheney would be so proud...

okay, so my homegirl PeanutButterCookiez did this fly album cover for Rain All Day (click the pic to enlarge) by this hip hop crew called The Nope. the artwork was tight enough that i decided to listen to the song (which she had on her profile). so, after about 4 bars of finely tuned lyricism, i went to the group's profile for more, and before long i was on my blog, pasting together this post. so what's my point? listen to the snippets and if you are impressed like i was, go to The Nope's mySpace and listen to the songs for free (or buy 'em at amazon.com), and remind them that it all happened because they had DOPE artwork!

King City Returns this Summer

my clandestine sources have confirmed that Tokyopop and Image comics are ganging up to release Brandon Graham's KING CITY as twelve 32 page oversized books, starting on August 19th. Brando is one of the illest cats doing it right now... he's deep into hip hop and the influence is clear in his work. the first six issues will incorporate the Tokyopop released OGN i reviewed last year but of course, Brandon is sweetening the pot with added bonuses to woo people like me to buy them anyways!
The young do-it-all comicbook artist is a ninja about comics who works hard (he has at least one other comic Multiple Warhedz dropping this year), and surrounds himself with artists who are just as psycho about making comics as he is (his girlfriend is currently drawing a story arc of ElephantMen). man after my own heart... anyways, do yourself a favor and peep more about Brandon and King City here.
