one of my favorite underground doitalls, Blueprint (no relation to jigga's series of records) of Weightless Records is back with his collabo crew GREENHOUSE. on this joint Blueprint teams up with label-mate Illogic to craft the two-part album Electric Purgatory. Part one will drop November 24th as a free download just after the CD version ships. like prior Weightless CD releases, it comes w/an 11x17 poster, all the instrumentals from the record and 'probably a bonus song'. Print is also flirting with dropping each of these 5 song joints on vinyl as well, but it's all just a teaser to get heads ready for the full-length GREENHOUSE album Bend But Don't Break due to hit in 2010. anyways click the pic to download Gettin' There off Electric Purgatory, and look for links to EP part one next month!

A comic you Probably Didn't Buy (but SHOULD have!)

that dude Arvid Nelson (Rex Mundi) has written one the best Mini-series that you never heard of in Dark Horse's post-apocalyptic sleeper Zero Killer. don't feel bad if you slept on Zero Killer. you're not alone... but let me school you!
Zero Killer stars Zero, a trash man (bounty hunter) in a New York City that is flooded by water as well as warring gangs. Zero is approached by agents of the world's last remaining superpower (Africa) to retrieve a mysterious briefcase from the one place he doesn't wanna go. this book has great atmosphere and complex characters that you need in a good comic. i had trouble tracking down issues, so i'm really looking forward to buying the trade (come WIT' it, Dark Horse!). anyways, click the pic for a character-centric preview of issue #6 (which is in stores now) and then feel free to read a SWEET interview of series writer Arvid Nelson over on CBR.

Nickelodeon Snags Ninja Turtles for $60 mil

my Clandestine informants have put me on to the $60 million acquisition by Nickelodeon of the mighty Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise that has been turning heads for 25 years. Turtle co-creator Peter Laird (sole owner of the franchise since co-creator Kevin Eastman sold him his half nine years ago) said on his blog that he was simply exhausted, having given half his life to managing the green guys' wild ride of comics, animated and live-action stardom. the deal makes Nickelodeon (part of the MTV/Viacom juggernaut) sole owner of the franchise, although Laird retains the right to make comics.
No one at Laird's Mirage Studios seems to know what their next move will be (including Laird himself), but artist Jim Lawson revealed that the artists did get a sizable buyout and that the studio is likely to go on, even without their cash cow. Still, Lawson (who has been a writer and artist on Turtles projects for over 20 years) appears to be somewhat shell-shocked (no pun intended) by it all.

i don't presume to be able to speak from experience, but i find this deal perplexing. dude did not sell the movie rights, or the teevee rights. He sold the "global intellectual property rights": toys, movies, television, video games, merchandising... the whole shebang! for $60 mil. i guess it really IS a buyer's market... and Nick will be letting the good times roll. plans are already in motion for CGI animated series and feature films for 2012, plus more toys from longtime Turtles toy maker Playmates. i mean, what do you guys think about this? am i a silly bastard or did Nick get a great deal here?

ODB The Movie?

Looks like the RZA is working the angles to get a biopic made of his cousin and fellow Wu-Tang Clansmen, the late great Old Dirty Bastard (RIP '68-'04). In an excellent interview with the AV Club, RZA spoke on the possibilities.

“We have talked about it. His estate is pretty confused... on what to do, and all the rights and all that shit, but it’s definitely been talked about... So we’ll see what life brings. In my opinion, I’d rather see an ODB pic than a Wu-Tang Clan pic. But an ODB pic, just to really describe his life, would be good. Right now, there is a documentary that’s done that’s pretty good. It ain’t a knock out of the park, but it’s pretty good, it gives a nice piece of him. Then you start with that, and we can build more awareness about his life, and build more interest in people seeing a movie about it.”

the internets are alive with the sound of people speculating as to who could play ole Dirt Mcgirt, and unfortunately, all the wrong names are being thrown around, most notably Chris Rock and Tracy Morgan. i would actually prefer to see a real actor cast to play Dirt. i don't understand why you would cast a comedian. i think odb was dead serious most of the time, just very eccentric. i hope they get an actual actor, and let the laughs come from the situations, not from making it a shitty slapstick movie.

I'd prefer more of an arthouse style film, and if i had my say, i'd probably cast Chiwetel Ejiofor (Redbelt, Four Brothers, Inside Man, Children of Men, Talk to Me). He has tons of charisma and on-screen gravity, plus he strikes me as actor enough to really give in to any role he takes. paired with the right director, we could have a hip hop classic on our hands! but it's all dreams and spec right now... what do you think? who would you want to star? to direct? what direction do you think an ODB biopic should take?

So Far So Good...

here's a bullet point from my NOTES TO COMICS ADAPTATION DECISION MAKERS: "if you're making a movie based on a comic with dope artwork, please get the artist of said comic involved in your movie poster process." somebody's paying attention because those geniuses that are making the big screen version of DC/Vertigo's The Losers actually had Jock (The Losers, Green Arrow: Year One) draw the poster. i have fingers and toes crossed for this film based on the excellent Spy-Fi comic by Jock and writer Andy Diggle. i reeeeeally want it to be GOOD! the film has Zoe Saldana (Star Trek, The Terminal), Idris Elba (Rock n' Rolla, Obsessed) , and Jefferey Dean Morgan (Watchmen) in the cast, so they have some things working form them so far...

They told him to Act his Age...

When i have trouble sleeping, i just sit down at my drawing board or computer and work instead. last night i colored this Manchild joint, which will probably serve as the cover to Manchild:Birthday Boy when it's eventually collected in graphic novel. if you're new around here, you pro'lly didn't already know that Manchild is the ultraviolent sci-fi tale of the world's illest 3-year-old killing machine... so now you know. anyways, i'm thinking about launching a Manchild webcomic in 2010... whatever the case, i just had this piece laying around and decided to color it. for those who can't wait 'till 2010, I'll include this drawing (along with more Manchild goodies) in my book Spontaneous:2009, which will drop in late December. that NOLA (gun) Clap

those visionary sons-a-guns at BOOM! Studios have teamed up with director/screenwriter Chris Gorak (Right at Your Door) and a talented group of teevee/film transplants to publish the 4-issue miniseries NOLA exploring one woman's tale of revenge in post-Katrina New Orleans, Louisiana (N.O. LA, get it?).
Gorak's scripting partner Pierluigi Cothran describes NOLA as "a violent, emotional story set in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, about a woman who has been wronged, and, unable to find justice through the normal channels, takes it upon herself to right those wrongs." He adds "It's been such a blast to work with Chris, and the artist, Damian Couceiro, is just killing those pages. It's been a pleasure from start to finish."

There's a 'Chasing Amy' Manga?

So i've been working on a book called 99 Movies That Should Be Comics for a while now... the hardest thing about writing the book is that the damn Japanese have made so many of our great movies into comics already. but in all seriousness, i was disappointed to find out that Chasing Amy was adapted to comics already (or rather to 'comic novel"... half of the book is a regular novel), because it was definitely on my list. but this one is not such a tragedy, since the audience for Chasing Amy pretty much already reads comics (it's an artsy romantic comedy about indy comics artists, written and directed by comics super-fan Kevin Smith of Clerks and Jay and Silent Bob fame).

one of the things that the Japanese comics industry has on ours is that the relationship between Japan's comics and cinema is more mutually beneficial, while ours is pretty much one-sided. i think if more movies were adapted into comics (and not just the other way around), people might be drawn to comics based on the love of the source material. and i mean all kinds of movies, not just action movies. it seems like a few companies (IDW, BOOM! Studios, and mainstay Dark Horse) are hitching their fence to licensing popular properties, and i'd like to see that continue to even lesser films. I'd love to see more directors and screen-writers start their own imprints where they continue the stories of the worlds they create (similar to the Wachowski's Burlyman Entertainment). It takes a lot less money to make comics, and they can sustain an audience for years, even making room for new material decades later (*cough*StarWars*cough*).
anyways, if you want to read a few of my reviews of movies that should be comics, hit my movie review blog.
