Rachel Rage is coming...

let all fans of thick-thighed sistas who shoot first and don't bother to ask questions later rejoice, because i have it on very good authority that indie do-it-all artist John Aston of Olde Town Comix is putting the finishing touches on a 170 page OGN for his blaxploitation-inspired anti-heroine, Rachel Rage. so to celebrate the fact that i should have a Rachel Rage OGN in my hot little hands sometime this spring, i penciled this sketch of the angry little minx last night... I really enjoyed Abusilum, the other comic of his that i reviewed in december, so i'm excited to see what he does with the character!

A Movie Franchise to DIE For

word is out that Warner Bros. is working to put together DC's Suicide Squad as a film franchise. on the heels of The Dark Knight and (the preemtively presumed success of) Watchmen, DC is looking to usher in a new era of dark comicbook pics (much the way The Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen did in comics in the eighties). and if you're looking for "grim and gritty", what better way than by featuring tales of villains running highly dangerous black ops missions to win their freedom? if you're thinking that it's not a good idea to make comicbook movies featuring d-list characters (and i bet you are), think again! any idea what film brought the comicbook movie back? it was Blade, a movie starring a Marvel comics character so obscure that lotsa people still argue with me when i tell 'em it's based on a comic! and this was before The Matrix, Spiderman or X-men, PLUS it starred a BLACK DUDE and STILL made a grip! the fact is, using d-listers for adaptation keeps fan backlash to a minimum, leaving filmmakers free to tweak the concept as needed without fear of the dreaded nerd tsunami!
anyways, i can tell you now that the screenplay is being written by Justin Marks (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Hack/Slash, Street Fighter) for the producer of Sherlock Holmes and Terminator: Salvation. the character list has yet to be released. Hopefully, Amanda Waller (the HNIC of the team, seen here), Deadshot and Bronze Tiger will all make the cut... seems like a pretty safe bet, since they've all been in DC cartoons lately. but like i said, they are looking to make a franchise, not just one movie... so let's hope it's good!

Comic of the Year

the ghettoManga Comic of the Year is PROOF, the story of a well-dressed Sasquatch, working for a government agency called The Lodge, which captures and cares for creatures whose existence otherwise remains unproven (also called Cryptids). while the idea of such an agency is well-tread (Hellboy, BPRD, Perhapanauts, etc.), PROOF stands out because of its exceptional writing and the devotion of the creative staff. PROOF is (GASP!) monthly and on-time. the story is engaging and filled with intrigue that makes it well worth picking up.

Special Agent John Prufrock is interesting because he talks, thinks and behaves like a human being, even though he clearly knows he isn't one, yet he retains the desire to meet more of his kind. He is always immaculately dressed, as he was taught the art of men's fashion by... but that would be telling! check out Proof Volume 1: Goatsucker (v. 1) and The Company of Men. both books are available in trade paperback on Amazon.com and at any comic shop or bookstore. the Sound and the Fury

The Hollywood Reporter says Sam Jackson has been signed for appearances in nine more Marvel comicbook movies- including Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, The Avengers, possible sequels to these and, perhaps most interestingly of all, the lead in their in-development S.H.I.E.L.D movie. for those who never heard, fans geeked out so hard over SamJack's post-credit shout out because we were CALLING for Sam to play the character, who was reimagined black (and in his likeness) by Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch in The Ultimates. anyways, i'm sure some of these will amount to cameos like he did in Iron Man so he'll still get to curse people out in other universes as well...

Champion of Children Award

Power Pack rocked hard in 2008, taking adventures with Iron Man, Spiderman, Avengers, the Hulk and more, and that's why Power Pack gets the Champion of Children Award for showing love to the kids! writer Marc Sumerak and Gurihuri are crafting fun, fabulous tales that'll entertain kids and adults alike starring the world's foremost kid superteam! i take a lotta crap for it, but i've always LOVED Power Pack! and for whatever reason, Marvel has decided to relaunch Power Pack in a series of miniseries, TPBs and magazines with a cool cartoon style!

now the Power Pack is running around with Wolverine... sorta. Jack Power and Franklin Richards take a wild trip through the time-stream and end up face-to-face with a pre-teen Wolverine! But since young James Howlett is nothing at all like the hero he is destined to one day become, it'll be up to our time-tossed troublemakers to teach the once-and-future-Wolvie how to kick some butt! click the pic to peep preview pages.
Wolverine/Power Pack is in stores now. peep more kid stuff at the Champion of Children blog.

Eminem Tries It Again...

Crack A Bottle (Eminem, Dr. Dre & 50 Cent)

After the atrocious 2004 album Encore, I figured Marshal was done. i mean, there were a couple cuts on there, but they were DROWNIN' in wack joints like my sister's french fries in ketchup... but it looks like people are feelin' the advance cuts off the upcoming joint, Relapse. lead single Crack A Bottle (Eminem, Dr. Dre & 50 Cent) broke the record for downloads in the first week, eclipsing previous fast-starter T.I.'s Live Your Life. the record should be out soon, if you can believe 50 Cent, who claimed the record was "a couple weeks" from completion about a month ago... Dre killed the track on this, Em was decent and Dre was acceptable... that's all i have to say.
lemme know what ya'll thought...

more Watchmen Virals

I love good viral marketing (see HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, & HERE) and I love Watchmen. I suggested in August that the company responsible for WATCHMEN Marketing should stage Keene Act Riots to promote the film, like the 'Take Back Gotham' and 'I Believe in Harvey Dent' campaign demonstrations in downtown Chicago for The Dark Knight. Here's what they came up with. I like it!

Cartoonist, OGN of the Year

Scott Pilgrim, Vol 4: Scott Pilgrim Gets It Together
the ghettoManga Cartoonist of the Year Award for 2008 goes to Bryan Lee O'Malley writer/artist of the OGN series Scott Pilgrim. Part four of the series Scott Pilgrim Gets It Together was voted the 2008 OGN of the Year.
Explaining the appeal of Scott Pilgrim is not difficult. it's a book about a twenty-something slacker who falls in Luh... Luh... who really likes this delivery girl Ramona who just so happens to take short cuts through Scott's dreams (there's a really good subspace portal that passes through there...). the problem is he can only date Ramona if he agrees to vanquish Ramona's Seven Evil Ex-boyfriends, but that's okay, 'cause Scott also happens to have MAD fightin' skills!
as you may have noticed, Scott Pilgrim is filled with hijinx, action, and small to medium doses of mushy stuff! in Gets It Together, Scott and Ramona wrestle with the L word (no, not lesbian!), Scott's band gets a chance to record, and Scott is stalked by a mysterious swordsman... good times! OH! and Scott faces off with another of Ramona's Evil Exes who's a little different than the others. the events of this volume force Scott to grow up (a little... he ACTUALLY gets a JOB!), preparing for his eventual meeting with Gideon, the evilest Ex of them all in part 6!
O'Malley takes advantage of the OGN format (popularized by the mass importing of manga) as well as anyone i've ever read. the pacing and storytelling in Scott Pilgrim would be very, very difficult to pull off in any other format. O'malley's art is deceptively cartoony, like a cross between Schulz's Peanuts, Waterson's Calvin and Hobbes and your favorite fighting video game. O'Malley combines humor, action and adolescent sweetheart drama as well as anyone since Stan Lee and Romita on classic Amazing Spiderman. peep this CBR interview with Bryan Lee O'Malley for more, but really, just buy the books. the 200 plus page joints are available for ten bucks apiece on Amazon, and well worth the look!
peace.

Everything's Gonna Be Alright...

there's a pretty good chance that the blog you're reading now wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Brotherman: Dictator of Discipline. not only did it inspire me, but tons of other cats like me site this comic as a serious influence on them as creative people. black kids who wanted to draw comics all dreamed of growing up to draw white superheroes before this book hit. in Brotherman, Dawud Anyabwile and Guy Sims created a character that that was every bit as tough and heroic as any I'd ever seen, and crafted a world as rich and diverse as there could possibly be... and every single good guy, bad guy, politician, cop, hostage, and hot chick in this comic were 100% black! not only that, but this comic debuted in 1990, at the height of hipHop's cultural brilliance, so the inhabitants of Brotherman's fictional, but all-too-real Big City are spilling over with more old/new school hip hop swagger than a YO! MTV Raps marathon! Densely and lovingly scripted by Guy Sims, the art stands up against anything you want to put up against it.

anyways, i could go on and on about what this book has meant to me, but why should you care about that? what you SHOULD care about is that this is the most important piece of comics history you never heard of. Dawud Anyabwile is the most influential black comicbook artist ever. this book is dope, and now they have collected the entire run into three Trade Paperbacks, over 100 pages each, that will drop simultaneously (that just means "at the same time"... YOU MUST LEARN!) on March 1st. click a picture to go over to BrothermanComics.com and cop em, fam! i don't care WHO you are (don't gimme that "but Samax, I'm not black... i can't relate to this" crap!), you need to get that joint, ASAP! and tell them you heard about it from ghettoManga, cousin!
holla...
