Comicbook World #26

Wacky Republican representative Michelle Bachmann has called for the armed overthrow of the US government. this is the same chick who advised that there should be an investigation into members of US congress to see which members were anti-America.
According to Smart Politics, Bachmann said, "I’m a foreign correspondent behind enemy lines and I try to let everyone back here in Minnesota know exactly the nefarious activities that are taking place in Washington." in a radio interview, she called for people to revolt against Obama's proposed energy tax in an "armed and dangerous" manner. she suggests repeatedly that violent attacks against "this administration" (aka against Obama) are needed to protect "freedom"...

Bachmann's call for what basicly amounts to a second civil war brings to mind a comic called DMZ about the aftermath of just such an uprising. in DMZ, The Free Armies (highly organized but independant militias of angry white Amercans) surprise the government with a guerilla-style revolution that sinks the country into a long and bloody civil war. because the army and national guard are tied up elsewhere, the Free Armies gain traction and the war becomes a stalemate. Told from the point of view of hapless photojounalist Matt Roth dropped in the demiliterized zone formerly known as Manhattan, DMZ is brilliantly written and illustrated. The creative team perfectly portrays the ever-present buzz of fear and despair of people living in a war zone that used to be America.
anyways, Bachmann's veiled racism and paranoia is easy to dismiss, until you consider the massive angry fringe turnout at republican rallies last election season (owed primarily to the presence of a promising black candidate). so while this chick is calling for a revolution, make sure you watch each other's backs fam!

Today's Black Superhero: Static

guest post by Wallrus
There is probably no teenage Black superhero with more universal appeal than Static. He's got brains, versatile abilities, a big heart, and a major sense of duty. It's no wonder he was the only superhero from Milestone comics that made it to TV albeit in a different form.

Unlike in the Static Shock animated TV series, the original Static had short hair, wore a Malcolm X hat as part of his uniform and it was his Mother he was left with; not his father. Static's abilities were electromagnetic in nature enabling him to mentally manipulate multiple forms of electricity and magnetism. He flew by levitating a manhole cover while standing on it.

While Static is an original character you could see traits in him that showed up in great heroes of the past. He had an intellect, wit, and sense of duty like Spider-Man. He was able to see the good in people and the overwhelmingly positive effect of his parents was not unlike that of Superman. Like Black Panther, he was a positive role model and exhibited much of the greatness that Black people can and do achieve in their real non-super lives. Look for him in the pages of DC Comics' Teen Titans as this character joins the mainstream comic universe and hopefully, once again, in his own comic.

Black Superhero of the Day:Venus Dee Milo

shout out to Becca for the help-out! Venus Dee Milo made her debut in the first issue of X-Statix, a spin-off from X-force (which was itself a spin-off from X-men). She has no arms, like the Greek Statue she is named for, Venus de Milo. She discovered her powers during an argument with her parents as a young adult, causing an explosion that destroyed her grandmother's home. she flees from the guilt and eventually joins X-force. Venus is made of pure energy- without the containment suit made for her by Professor X, she wouldn't have a physical form. As a result, nobody really knew she was black until she told the team leader. She can fly, teleport from place to place, use her energy as a weapon, and heal herself and others.
this new version of X-force was created by the critically acclaimed creative team of Peter Milligan and Mike Allred and revolved around a superhero reality show that sent mutants on high-risk missions and repaid them with an instant rockstar lifestyle. after coming in conflict with the original team called X-force, who didn't appreciate these guys stealing their name, the group changed their name to the X-Statix. all this was a smokescreen for Marvel's decision to change the name of the comic to keep from having to pay a royalty to the co-creator of the original X-force, Rob Liefeld. unlike other angsty ultra-serious X-men titles, X-Statix combined dark humor with ultra-violence and social commentary to create a book that was both entertaining and unique. although the team saw members die horrible violent deaths on a regular basis, Venus lasted long enough to... well, that would be telling!

Trade PaperBack of the Year

the ghettoManga TPB of the Year is the collection of Warren Ellis and Paul Duffield's fab webcomic Freakangels Volume 1. if you are unfamiliar with Warren Ellis, he's one of the craziest and most talented writers in the freakin' free world! in addition to being a mad genius, Ellis is also mad prolific, and the british scribe has a knack for working with hot, fresh, unknown (at least to me) talent. on Freakangels, he's workin' with Paul Duffield, who is smooth, skillful and consistent.
Fans of Ellis' superhero comics work will not have any problems getting into this post-apocalyptic science-fiction tale about gifted young psychics who try to pay for the great destruction they accidentally brought on by being down-low community messiahs. exploring the lives of the twelve "strange children born in England at exactly the same moment" gets really interesting when you find out that the Freakangels all banded together to put out one of their number, and he has started hypnotizing people and sending them after his mates for revenge!
Freakangels is a slow-burning fire. if you are an impatient ADD kid, or the kind of person who hates earthbound sci-fi, character driven comics or virtuoso animation-style art ... skip it. everyone else should click one of the pics to buy the TPB, or at least peep it online for free!

Still I Rise: A Graphic History of African Americans

I just found out my man Elihu Bey did the art for a graphic novel adaptation of the history of Black America called Still I Rise: A Graphic History of African Americans. as soon as i cop it, i'll be sure to review it here! but you can beat me to it... click the pic to order on Amazon.com
here's the sales pitch:
"Still I Rise: A Graphic History of African Americans is a critically acclaimed work with an impressive scope: the entire history of Black America, told in an accessible graphic-novel form. Updated from its original version—which ended with the Million Man March—it now extends from the early days of colonial slavery right through to Barack Obama’s groundbreaking presidential campaign. Compared by many to Art Spiegelman’s Maus, Still I Rise is a breathtaking achievement that celebrates the collective African-American memory, imagination, and spirit."
sounds good to me!
