Another doomed Invasion...

In case you haven't been reading Marvel lately, the Skrulls have invaded, and all the heroes missed it,because the Skrulls are sneaky, shape-changing bastards!!! i didn't write this to sell you on the crossover or anything... but you NEED to cop Black Panther #39, part one of See Wakanda and Die. not only does it sport the ultra-keen Jason Pearson cover seen above, but the beautiful art of Jefte Palo is so good, it'll make you slap somebody!
so anyways, the Skrull Invasion has hit the motherland... The Skrulls have landed in Wakanda, fiendin' ta get their li'l green mitts on the tiny African nation's supply of the super-rare Vibranium... the only problem? they slept on the King of said African nation: T'challa the Black Panther! T'challa's forces and the Skrull invaders neutralize each other's technology, so all he and his countrymen have to deal with is being outnumbered three to one. "In other words," says T'challa, "we've got them right where we want them..."
DOPE! cop it...

Black Superhero gets his own show on BET

so here's our first look at the new Black Panther toon BET has cookin'... you may remember i told ya'll Marvel had inked a deal to turn the first black superhero into the star of a primetime animated show on BET in 2009. Reginald Hudlin (who currently writes the Black Panther comic book for Marvel) is supervising for BET, and obviously they have chosen to stick close to the visual steelo of John Romita Jr, who penciled the initial story arc of the comic relaunch for Hudlin.

You Can't Stop The Prophet by Jeru the DamajaIf you remember this, then you're already familiar with the work of NYC-based illustrator Christian Cortes, whose work first reached me based on his ceedee designs for Jeru and other hip hop artists, but his art game is more expansive than that! he started out, like a lotta hip hop visual art cats, tagging. he's expanded into the magazine illustrating, fashion, galleries, and of course ceedee packaging."I‘m a Visual Artist working in New York City. I work as fulltime Art Director for an apparel company, as well as being a freelance illustrator and painter.
I have been working with record companies and the fashion industry for 15 years. Although my work can seem very clean and polished, i like to keep a sense of the hand done techniques still present...
My gallery painting style developed out of my graffitti background. I have been exploring combinations of graffitti typography with surrealism, abstraction, South American iconography and New York culture."
and he does comics too! peep his comicSpace page here. anyways, son is nice! for a peek at his catalog, go here, a'ight?

former Astronaut confirms existence of Aliens

from Live Leak

Moon-walker Dr Edgar Mitchell Claims Alien Contact Cover-up
Featured
"there has been visitation"
July 24, 2008 12:01am

FORMER NASA astronaut and moon-walker Dr Edgar Mitchell - a veteran of the Apollo 14 mission - has stunningly claimed aliens exist.
And he says extra-terrestrials have visited Earth on several occasions - but the alien contact has been repeatedly covered up by governments for six decades.
Dr Mitchell, 77, said during a radio interview that sources at the space agency who had had contact with aliens described the beings as 'little people who look strange to us.'

He said supposedly real-life ET's were similar to the traditional image of a small frame, large eyes and head.
Chillingly, he claimed our technology is "not nearly as sophisticated" as theirs and "had they been hostile", he warned "we would be been gone by now".

"Your Movie Needs More White people!"

legendary film star Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon, Witness, The Color Purple) is having a bit of trouble. see, he wants to direct a movie telling the true story of Francois Toussaint-Louverture, the slave who rose to become one of the fathers of Haiti's independence from France in 1804, making it the first black nation to throw off imperial rule and become a republic... but he's been getting the same question from all the producers:

"Producers said 'It's a nice project, a great project, but where are the white heroes?" said Glover. "The first question you get, is 'Is it a black film?' All of them agree, it's not going to do good in Europe, it's not going to do good in Japan."
Glover said he needs a paltry $30 million to make the film, and wasn't having much luck "I couldn't get the money (in France), I couldn't get the money in Britain. I went to everybody. You wouldn't believe the number of producers based in Europe, and in the States, that I went to," he said. so far, Glover has about $18 mil. and where did he get it from, you ask? a cultural body set up in 2006 by his friend, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez (you know, the guy who called President Bush the devil from the floor of the U.N.) to counter what he termed "the Hollywood film dictatorship".
NICE! anyways, the film is
Due to be shot in Venezuela early next year, and will star Don Cheadle, Mos Def, Wesley Snipes and Angela Bassett.

Notorious D.E.S.T.R.O.

Everybody knows Destro is black, but you didn't know he had BARS though, didja?

i got caught in the Trap...

on a whim, i recently copped Trap Dancing: The Aym Geronimo Collection Trade Paperback by J. Morgan Neal and Todd Fox. it's a fabulous pulp-inspired adventure comic starring the super-smart scientist/explorer/adventurer Aym Geronimo and her team of "Postmodern Pioneers" as they travel the globe kicking ass and taking names... in the interest of science, of course!

Trap Dancing finds a way to include romance, science, fisticuffs, spirituality and gun-clapping all in one book, so of course it gets the thumbs up... plus, it turns the tables on Indiana Jones, Johnny Quest an'em by putting the Indian chick in charge for once! Aym is an assimilated Apache, unlike her brother Wind, who holds onto his culture with an iron grip that speaks volumes. the book has a great multicultural cast of heroes and villains, and manages to give each character space to breathe, but the distinguished Ms. Geronimo is definitely the star: she's brilliant and able-bodied, never getting upstaged by the other characters. if you're anything like me, and you enjoy seeing women run the show from time to time, peep some previews from Trap Dancing on their comicspace, and cop the trade here.

Brotherman:Dictator of Discipline has sold over 750K books independently since its release in 1990, and is sited as a major influence among black comics creators (including me). series creator Dawud Anyabwile posted this picture on his blog entitled "Hancock/Brotherman - Mysteriously look alike?" implying that the character design for Hancock was ripped off from his Brotherman design.

it's gettin' Dark, and Hell is hot...

went to the Midnight show of The Dark Knight, and one thing is for sure: this joint's gonna make a load'a bread! i had to go to three theaters to find one that hadn't sold out multiple screens, and i got one of the last spots available, sitting in the chronic kneck-pain seats.
and it was worth it...
i doubt if any movie, let alone one about a guy dressing up like a bat and bitch-slapping the wicked, could live up to the hype The Dark Knight brought in with it, but i'd say director Chris Nolan comes damn close to a perfect superhero movie, with this follow-up to his fan-favorite big-budget debut, Batman Begins.Dark Knight made me happy, like Begins, by breaking superhero movie molds. where most sequels in the genre choose to focus on the villain's sad story leading up to transforming them into the evil bastard that has to be stopped, Dark Knight respects the audience enough not to bother. rather than engage in poorly constructed psycho-babble, The Dark Knight sticks to the psycho. the Joker is an evil bastard that has to be stopped, and that's all you need to know.
this movie, like Begins, doesn't retread any existing Batman story, it creates a new one... part of the genius is that Nolan's films do what other superhero flicks don't: both Begins and Dark Knight actually add to the mythos of the characters. he ties the Joker to Batman flawlessly, showing how the strengths and weaknesses of both men tie them together as the ultimate arch-enemies. by the end of the film, Batman turns everything that has happened to his advantage, even the loss of everything he had hoped for the whole film. he is possibly the most pure interpretation of Batman's personality ever seen on screen.
The film is not without weaknesses. i still think these films rely too heavily on action movie logic, where a more horror-suspense bent would work better. talking while fighting, car chases, and technology effects are all a ton of fun, but i don't think they are Nolan's strong suit. speaking of which, the Batman suit still needs work... the cape doesn't do the Batman thing of adding to his general scariness that you get in the comic. the beauty of it is that like Batman Begins, the strength of Dark Knight lies with the story and the actors, not the action-superhero window dressing.
and the acting was fabulous. while there were no weak performances, the late Heath Ledger owned this film. i can't say enough about his low down, gritty, grimy performance. he was so good, i actually think he will get that Oscar nod every one keeps talking about (he's a lock for the Golden Globe). from his first scene, he erased every prior interpretation of the sneering mass-murdering anarchist Joker, grounding the larger-than-life "clown prince of crime" in the real world...
so anyways, in case you can't tell, i thought The Dark Knight was even better than Batman Begins. even with all the flaws i mentioned, i considered it an overall fabulous picture that i can't wait to watch again. the Batman is brutal and ruthless, and the Joker is even more so. go check 'em out, and come back here and let's talk about it...

Still All Wet, in a Good way...

that PBS painter, the late Bob Ross taught me all about the happy accident. one such occurrence lead me to another Ross, Campbell that is, when i came across his southern-fried zombie OGN The Abandoned back in 2006. seems the spirit of Ross has struck one mo' 'gin... today browsing in Borders, i came across Ross's (Campbell that is) new OGN, Water Baby, the story of raw-dog surfer girl Brody for whom all was well , until a giant Shark chomped off her leg. a year later, Brody is still adjusting to her artificial limb and trippy shark-infested nightmares when her skeevy ex-boyfriend shows up and hyjinx ensue.
Water Baby has the easy storytelling and flawless drawing style that hooked me on Campbell's work in the first place. unlike most slice-of-life books that depend on kwirky art styles, the Ross-o-verse titles The Abandoned, Wet Moon, and now Water Baby (because you can sense that these characters live on the same highway up and down the east coast) lean on one of the most naturalistic and classical art styles you'll see anywhere. these cartoon-cool characters are all drawn with a sense of real-world gravity and texture, without falling into that boring imitation-of-life that ruins so many "photo-realistic" artists, who ultimately lose the contest of being compared with the real world. Ross isn't imitating the world, he's creating one where hot, weird girls of all shapes and sizes rule!
then of course, he combines that with a child-like ability to imagine... you'll geek over the gory, eerie mutant shark imagery from Brody's nightmares!
anyways, while Water Baby is not quite as good as his other books, i bet many readers will find it more palatable and mainstream than Wet Moon, and not quite as gory as The Abandoned. I definitely recommend that you cop Water Baby (DC/Minx), or at least go loiter at a local bookstore and check it out!
holla!

De La Sol...

if you've got windows, you have what it takes to collect solar energy! yes, the sci-fi staple of a solar-powered world is getting closer to science fact, according to grist.org. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a light-absorbing dye that, when painted on a window, transfers energy via the glass into solar cells at the window's edges.

don't run to Home Depot looking for the dyes just yet... Issues remain to be solved. the new dyes are not as fragile as the original ones conceived in the 1970s, but they still have a lifetime of only about three months, MIT electrical engineer Marc Baldo told New Scientist. "That by itself is not good enough, but it's on the way."
that's what's up!

you really COULD Become Batman... sorta.

nerds drop science on the Batman.
Scientific American journalist JR Minkel interviewed University of Victoria at British Columbia associate professor of kinesiology and neuroscience, 26-year practitioner of Chito-Ryu karate-do, and author of Becoming Batman: The Possibility of a Superhero, Paul Zehr about how one might actually transform himself into a one-man war on crime. as i read the interview, i was reminded that there really are multiple interpretations of Batman... the one that fights alongside Superman and the Flash in Justice League of America is very different from the guy who gets tapped on the jaw by a street thug in Detective Comics, who also differs from the almost supernatural vampire bat you witness every month in Batman.
this interview illuminates the fact that writers and fans choose which Batman they like best. similarly, filmmakers, animators and teevee directors seeking to bring Batman to the screen choose (sometimes from one scene to the next) which Batman to portray.
anyways, the interview is great! peep it here and come back and talk about it!

Instant Classic!

this weekend, i finally read Fierce, the action-adventure graphic novel by the Love brothers, Robert and Jeremy (Chocolate Thunder). the book stars Jonathan Fierce, a Jamerican FBI profiler with Minority Report-style ESP that allows him to see murders and other crimes before they happen. When Jamaican gangsters kill his team, the only real family he's ever had, and the FBI wants to charge him with the crime, Fierce kidnaps the fly psychiatrist who's developed a crush on him and heads to Kingston where he must face the ghosts of his past, evade capture by the feds, and take on the Jamaican underworld head-on. thankfully, Fierce can now hear the voices of his slain teammates, and channel their skills and abilities to become a one-man strike force, so it's all good.
Fierce has
good art and a great story. the action-packed pacing has the feel of the kind of action movie that black folks would love to see in theaters or on cable teevee, so if you like those kindsa films, give this graphic novel a shot!
if you check it out (or if you already read it), let me know what you thought!

All Dressed Up...

the comic i'm reading that you should be reading too is PROOF, the story of a well-dressed Sasquatch, working for a government agency called The Lodge, which captures and cares for creatures whose existence otherwise remains unproven (also called Cryptids). while the idea of such an agency is well-tread (Hellboy, BPRD, Perhapanauts, etc.), PROOF stands out because of its exceptional writing and the devotion of the creative staff. PROOF is (GASP!) monthly and on-time, making it well worth picking up. Special Agent John Prufrock is interesting because he talks, thinks and behaves like a human being, even though he clearly isn't one, yet he retains the desire to meet more of his kind. He is always immaculately dressed, as he was taught the art of men's fashion by... but that would be telling! check out PROOF: Goatsucker, now available in trade paperback.
