PREVIEW- new Usagi Yojimbo

It's Dark Horse Comics' 25th anniversary, which explains the big 25 on the cover of Usagi Yojimbo #136, the first issue of  the new story arc. If you've never read Stan Sakai's epic saga of a wandering rabbit samurai, this is a good time to jump on board...

Stan Sakai is a master cartoonist, and this looks to be a great chapter in the life of the rabbit ronin! Usagi Yojimbo #136 will be in stores tomorrow, March 30th. Cop it at your local comicshop, or start at the beginning with Usagi Yojimbo, Book 1: The Ronin.
If you REALLY feel like diving in, you can cop the Usagi Yojimbo: Special Edition Box Set collecting the first seven Usagi books, including the earliest stories; the origin story, the Samurai original graphic novel; and literally dozens more.  It also has extra material, some from the long-out-of-print hardcover editions and some brand new: a complete full-color gallery of the more than 50 Usagi covers from that period (never-before-collected); many preparatory sketches; two "non-canon" Usagi stories by Sakai co-starring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (with whom Usagi also shared screen time in the TMNT TV series); and a long career-spanning interview with Sakai. If you've got the bread ($63 as I write this, marked down from $100!), you can click here to cop that. 25 years worth of furry samurai action, suitable for kids yet good enough for you!

  1. I plan on getting that collection myself. $65 is well worth it.

  3. is it me, or is Mr. Sakai getting better?

His work is still Sergio-influenced, but there's a bit of Mobius in there as well.

'nother one for the list. Sigh.

  4. no doubt.
He accomplishes so much without using zip-a-tone or washes or anything! creates real grays with just hatching.
