Black Panther Cartoon Debuts! (sorta...)
Marvel has been teasing the release of a cartoon for the Black Panther produced by Reggie Hudlin (who was writing Black Panther
and was an executive at BET at the time) for a minute: I posted the teaser trailer on Youtube in 2008, and the comments ranged from "OMG I can't wait" to "worst animation everrr"... nevertheless, with Hudlin gone from BET and no longer writing the comic, I figured the show was dead in the water. how wrong I was...
Since then, they have replaced the voice actor playing the Panther in the trailer with your man Djimon Hounsou (Gladiator
, Amistad
, Push
, Constantine
), whose likeness has already been immortalized in the sword and sorcery comic Thulsa Doom, now his voice gets to embody the King of Wakanda. Jill Scott supplies the voice of Storm from the X-men (that's Queen Ororo to you, buddy!), longside Kerry Washington (Lakeview Terrace, Ray, Fantastic Four) as Shuri (the Panther's sister, currently the new Black Panther in the comic) and Alfre Woodard (The Family That Preys

If you lived in Australia, you would already know all this, of course... since Black Panther: The Animated Series debuted on Aussie station ABC3 with an hour-long T'Challa-fest featuring episodes 1 and 2 of 'Who is the Black Panther' this past weekend. While Hudlin insists that the show would not be just a glorified animatic or motion comic (like people were fearing based on the trailer), and that there are scenes and characters in the animated series that did not appear in the comic, I can't confirm the quality of the final animation, yet. still no word of when the show will drop here in America either, but once I hear something (or catch some bootleg BP:TAS video), I'll pass it on to you.

Am I wrong to be worried about Spider-Man?
in case you haven't heard, Sony has scrapped its plans for Spider-Man 4... Tobey Maguire, Sam Raimi and the rest have apparently been given their walking papers as Sony has Plan B'd their asses. The script for a Spidey reboot has already been written that is "gritty and contemporary" and will focus on a teenage Peter Parker struggling with his powers and teen angst. Like everyone else, Sony has been mesmerized by the success of 2008 GhettoManga Movie of the Year The Dark Knight. like their comicbook namesakes did in the eighties, Dark Knight and Watchmen are threatening to drag superhero movies in to the depths of the 'not just for kids' dungeon that led to so many depressing, awful and utterly forgettable superhero comics in the '90s.
I'm hoping Sony hasn't forgotten that Spider-Man
was still THE superhero movie franchise, even though part 3 was pretty weak. the combination of personal demons and family friendly charm is what makes Spidey work, so i'm hoping Sony keeps that in mind. even after all the cringe-worthy moments in Spider-Man 3, I will still be sad to see Sam Raimi go. He had just the right blend of goofy and serious for Peter Parker and company. Is a new director going to get it so right?

Nickelodeon Snags Ninja Turtles for $60 mil
my Clandestine informants have put me on to the $60 million acquisition by Nickelodeon of the mighty Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise that has been turning heads for 25 years. Turtle co-creator Peter Laird (sole owner of the franchise since co-creator Kevin Eastman sold him his half nine years ago) said on his blog that he was simply exhausted, having given half his life to managing the green guys' wild ride of comics, animated and live-action stardom. the deal makes Nickelodeon (part of the MTV/Viacom juggernaut) sole owner of the franchise, although Laird retains the right to make comics.
No one at Laird's Mirage Studios seems to know what their next move will be (including Laird himself), but artist Jim Lawson revealed that the artists did get a sizable buyout and that the studio is likely to go on, even without their cash cow. Still, Lawson (who has been a writer and artist on Turtles projects for over 20 years) appears to be somewhat shell-shocked (no pun intended) by it all.
i don't presume to be able to speak from experience, but i find this deal perplexing. dude did not sell the movie rights, or the teevee rights. He sold the "global intellectual property rights": toys, movies, television, video games, merchandising... the whole shebang! for $60 mil. i guess it really IS a buyer's market... and Nick will be letting the good times roll. plans are already in motion for CGI animated series and feature films for 2012, plus more toys from longtime Turtles toy maker Playmates. i mean, what do you guys think about this? am i a silly bastard or did Nick get a great deal here?

due to my personal moratorium on $4 comics, i never got a chance to read Wednesday Comics, but all i've heard is people gushing about how awesome it is. to help save myself from the temptation to buy it, i didn't even look through any of 'em ('cause i KNEW i would pro'lly cave in if i did). but word is DC is on the brink of dropping an 11 x 17 hardcover collection of the 12 week series for $50... it won't come out until may, and i'm sure a cheaper paperback will drop after that, but at least i can relax, knowing i will have the option of getting them without letting them torch my wallet. maybe NOW it's safe to peek at my friends copies...holla!

Nas speaks...
Nas on CNN speaking about his music and the open letter he wrote in reaction to youth violence in Chicago...people focus on what they want to focus on. Nas writes about as much conscious uplifting music as he does gangster stuff. while i think Nas is downplaying the effects such art and music can have on an individual, i still think it is childish for people to go to a rapper and plead with them to change, as if it will make a difference. does this dude really believe there are no positive role models or music in hip hop? "Change the game, Nas! do it for the babies!"
c'mon, dude... imploring a rapper to change his music is like going to a baseball player and asking him to stop taking 'roids 'for the love of the game' without demanding that the league (that benefits from his inflated stats) crack down on it. a man is not going to do something that goes against how he makes his money. what you need to do is ask WHY does this violence happen, WHO benefits from the violence, and WHAT changes can we make to the conditions that contribute to violence. Nas does not benefit from violence, so stop questioning him. he actually is trying to USE his influence to curb the violence. and if they must focus on a Nas song, do they have to pick the WACKEST song he ever made? what is this, Fox News? so i injected a couple better songs, just in case you never listened to him, so you would know better!
anyways, as you can tell, i have a pretty strong and developed opinion about it... but what do ya'll think?

word has it that Kevin Smith's homeboy and producing partner Scott Mosier has teamed up with ghettoManga Award-Winning Cartoonist and Illustrator Jim Mahfood to pitch a new kids' cartoon show (yeah, i know...) that the newly Marvelous house of mouse accepted. Food is already known to fans of the Askewniverse for his work on the Clerks comic for Oni Press. Mosier let word slip about the show's acceptance on his podcast, but hasn't given any details about the show so far. just thought i'd give props to FOOD ONE! for more info on Jim Mahfood, go here.holla!

Once Again, It's On...
that dude Tyrese is making plenty noise with his comic MAYHEM! over at Image. the first issue broke the single-store sales record and his online hype machine had so many people calling one store that the owner was turning fans away! well, get ready for round two, as MAYHEM! #2 hits comic shops Wednesday, September 9th. of course, Tyrese's team is already taking pre-orders too at their website, so get it how you want it...anyways, never one to rest on his achievements, the singer/actor has leaked the cover for issue #3 w
ith art by that dude Jim Lee and colors by Alex Sinclair (seen here on the right,click to enlarge). now he has also announced plans for a romance book called Lovesick that i'm especially interested in, because it will be directed right at his existing fan base... so expect more news on that as i get it. in fact, it looks like i will get a chance to do a phone interview with Tyrese about his comics, movies and whatever else i decide to talk to him about pretty soon... when i talked to him yesterday, he told me some stuff (that i'm not allowed to discuss yet) about his future plans that will raise the eyebrows of fans, critics and haters alike, so stay tuned fam!holla!
