5 comic book artists I would PAY to work on their OWN comics

Everyone has been fantasizing about what they would do if they won the Powerball, which was over a billion dollars until a handful of people won it last week. Of course, I would put money into perfecting my self-publishing machine, but I would also devote a good portion of it to invest in comic book artists who create comics I want to read, but that I probably won't get to read because artists either have day jobs, or wind up getting sidetracked into working on projects for other people.  Eff what you heard! The only thing missing from the black comix underground is money! And if I had the money, I'd put it where my mouth is. Here's five easy bets...

You had me at "E is for Exctinction"...

Just between you and me, the last time I was REALLY excited about the X-men was during Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's mind-melting run on NEW XMEN, so my eyes bugged out when I saw the cover to E is for Extinction #1, which explores the Secret Wars remix planet dedicated to the Morrison-Quitely era of Marvel's Merry Mutants.  The idea of drawing comics featuring characters I don't own and never printing them (because, you know... the law or something...) is totally alien to me. That said, there are some really dope fan comics out there. Here's one of them: Secrets of the Ooze, by that dude Ross Campbell...

You pro'lly already know I'm a big fan of rising star cartoonist Ross Campbell (Glory, TMNT, Shadoweyes, Wet Moon), whose mastery of drawing lovely girls of every conceivable shape, size and color is matched only by his skill at writing them as fully-realized characters. My introduction to Ross's work came from running across the ruthless zombie invasion graphic novel The Abandoned that he put out as part of Tokyopop's awesome but ultimately doomed line of American graphic novels. I said all that to say that Ross's new webcomic Can't Look Back picks up where The Abandoned left off. Sorta...

We're obviously champions of creator-owned indie comics here at GhettoManga... but there is something special about watching a creator get the chance to work on a property they truly love. After years of interacting with Ross Campbell (Wet Moon, Shadoweyes) on the internet, I know Ross LOVES the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, so it is especially cool to watch him illustrate the Turtles on this IDW book.

the "GLORY: WAR TORN" paperback by Joe Keatinge & @RossCampbelll drops this month! I'm excited or whatever...

I was EXTREMELY excited to hear about the release of GLORY: WAR TORN, which raps up the high-octane ultraviolent re-imagining of Rob Liefeld's otherworldly ultimate warrior (who just happens to be a badass chick) Glory, as told by Joe Keatinge and the mighty Ross Campbell. Ross's wraparound covers for the trades are worth the price of admission, and War Torn shows off Glory's little sisters, and her battle cat Beleszava...

Around this time last year, I wrote a review of Heather Nunnely's fledgling sci-fi webcomic Vacant, promising to back it on Kickstarter if and when she completed her first story arc. Two weeks ago, despite my chronic brokeness, I kept my word. Now I'm trying to figure out how I can afford to raise my pledge so I can cop this Kickstarter Exclusive print of Ross Campbell's interpretation of Vacant's star, Commander Hayze.

Now if the magnetic pole reversal smashes our atoms when we cross the galactic horizon or whatever, my soul will still rest easy knowing you got a chance to see this...

Wet Moon Vol 6 release date on the Horizon

I'm glad to hear that the 6th volume of Ross Campbell's genre-bending girl-centric OGN series Wet Moon will be out a little earlier than expected! Previews has the book scheduled to drop in awesome comic shops like mine on September 5th, which is only three shorts months away. Let's look at some preview pages to celebrate! Remember, if you haven't read volume 5, you might learn something you don't wanna know, so proceed with caution...
