Download the New Black Panther Cartoon

Props to my man Marcus who found this torrent download for episodes 3 & 4 of the new Black Panther cartoon. to download that joint click here. If you were late getting to the YouTube playlists I posted last week, you can thank Marvel (and/or BET) for flexing their copyright and having the videos pulled. this brings me back to my theory that they released Black Panther exclusively in Australia on purpose as a risk-free way to legally 'leak' it, then yank it after gauging early fan reaction. Obviously, this is just my chocolate-milk-induced conspiracy theory, but I don't think anyone in corporate media is dumb enough (even at Marvel and BET) to believe you can release a new cartoon, but keep it inside the lines you draw for it. So then why do it? well, I have MY answer. Hopefully, they learned what they wanted to know, and govern themselves accordingly... as for me, I think I'll reread the TPB when I get a free minute!

Wanna Watch The Black Panther Cartoon?

Everybody can stop being mad at the Australians... now we poor Americans can watch the new Black Panther cartoon too, thanks to the miracle of YouTube. The animation is more than a typical motion comic, but don't expect Afro Samurai. I thought it was pretty dope for what it was. I'll be tuning in... to y'know... YouTube... for anybody who hasn't read Reggie Hudlin's  Who Is the Black Panther trade already, this pretty closely follows the plot of the book.  They made some minor changes to the story, adding a couple scenes, for example. I was actually surprised a couple times. I think I'll go back and read it again while we're waiting on the next episode...
so anyways, what did you guys think?

Reggie Hudlin speaks on Black Panther Cartoon, Working for Marvel, etc

here's a nice interview with Reggie Hudlin, movie director and producer, former BET exec, and comicbook writer. in this interview from San Diego Comicon, Hudlin speaks on his time at BET and his writing Black Panther for Marvel. I read recently that Hudlin was originally supposed to do the first six issues (the story collected as Who Is the Black Panther), and wound up writing the book for 5 years, all of which are now collected in Trades. I found that interesting, since those were the strongest issues in his run. In his defense, the book would have been better if all the issues has art of the caliber as what John Romita Jr (Amazing Spiderman, Kick-Ass) produced for that early arc. anyways, hope you enjoy the interview, and stay tuned for more Black Panther news later on!

the New Kick-Ass Trailer is HOT!

Maybe I WILL attend SXSW this year...

Greetings party people! I just found out yesterday that the movie version of Millar and Romita's ultra-violent action comic Kick-Ass will be debuting at SXSW (read 'South By Southwest') in Austin this March a full month before the nationwide release April 16th. If the budget permits, maybe i will attend this year... (in case you missed it, peep the redband NSFW trailer here)

this little girl will Kick your Ass...

yeah, the entire thirty-something comic nerdiverse that I live in is already fired up about the big screen adaptation of Kick-Ass, the comic by Mark Millar & John Romita Jr that asks what it would be like if a normal dude became addicted to roaming the streets as a masked vigilante. I think once non-comics readers get a look at this ultra-violent redband trailer featuring the foul-mouthed little sidekick Hit-Girl, the world will catch on fire for this movie as well. so anyways, put the kids to bed or wait till your boss goes to lunch and watch this trailer. Kick-Ass is scheduled to hit theaters in April of 2010. if you can't wait until then to get more of this high octane goodness, cop the trade paperback here.

Can I Kick It?

for some reason, the modern comic book has been running around in circles trying to make superhero comics more "realistic" for decades. and while i would argue that it has resulted in some pretty stupid comics, every now and then something truly awesome arrives on the scene. enter comics giants Mark Millar and John Romita Jr's straight-faced action comic, the aptly entitled Kick-Ass, the laugh-out-loud story of Dave, an extremely regular kid who becomes addicted to doling out ultra-violent, costumed vigilante justice.
which is not to say he's especially good at it! the kid who inadvertantly becomes the YouTube sensation called Kick-Ass takes as much and as good as he gives, but even when it lands him in the hospital, he just can't get enough!
the funniest thing about Kick-Ass is that it became so popular, so fast that the movie adaptation (did i mention they're making it a movie? oh... they are.) may come out before the book story it adapts is finished! isn't life something...

Fringe Benefits...

I read book one of the futuristic indie comic The Fringe awhile ago. i was drawn to it because of the drawing style of writer-artist N. Steven Harris (Aztek), whose quirky yet professional art reminded me of the blocky figures and well-detailed environments of John Romita, junior. the series' super-powered, one woman anti-terrorist weapon looks like she could have stepped right out of the beloved Daredevil or X-men comics of my youth, but also looks fully, delightfully BLACK! so when i decided to order some books from IndyPlanet, The Fringe was on the short list. still, after i read the first issue, i wasn't sure if i liked it or not.
the book one centered on Jasira (a member of the Fringe, a group of insurgents rebelling against an oppressive government), who has been captured and transformed into a woman of mass destruction that the evil corporate government plans to use against the rebellion... but who the rebellion is and why they are rebelling wasn't addressed to my satisfaction. i didn't know enough to decide if i liked the book or not... i decided i'd read issue 2 before making up my mind.

well, i read #2... and it was DOPE!!! this issue shows the events leading up to Jasira's capture and introduces many important characters from the Fringe Insurgency, and hints at its structure and customs. Harris lays out just enough info to keep it interesting, and fills the book with various kinds of bone-crushing action to keep it spicy! having seen what i need to see, i can recommend folks to buy the Fringe over at IndyPlanet, but i must encourage you to buy both issues to get started, because it helps to have both to lay the foundation that'll have you anticipating more!

Black Superhero gets his own show on BET

so here's our first look at the new Black Panther toon BET has cookin'... you may remember i told ya'll Marvel had inked a deal to turn the first black superhero into the star of a primetime animated show on BET in 2009. Reginald Hudlin (who currently writes the Black Panther comic book for Marvel) is supervising for BET, and obviously they have chosen to stick close to the visual steelo of John Romita Jr, who penciled the initial story arc of the comic relaunch for Hudlin.

Paint the White House Black...

so i've been buying very few comics lately. don't get me wrong, i still love comics and all that, but money is slim these days, so i read a lotta comics in the store! one comic i REALLY want to be better is The Black Panther.
I mean, i get excited just thinking about a really great run of it. alas, Marvel seems determined to not let it happen. the writing is very good (by hollywood director and BET Exec Reggie Hudlin), but the art is struggling, since veteran artist John Romita Jr (Eternals, Wolverine, The Gray Area, Spiderman) left the book for whatever reason after one story arc (collected in Trade Paperback form, cover art by Romita shown here). i mean, the marriage of the Panther and Storm of the X-men (arguably the two most important black characters in all of comics) was drawn by... Scott Eaton? wouldn't it have rocked if it was drawn by rising (black) star Olivier Coipel (Avengers, House of M... cover art seen below), Chrisscross, Carlos Pacheco, or Chris Bachalo (droool...)

anyways, the latest issue of Black Panther is OFF THE CHAIN (and that's a good thing...). the Royal Couple (did i mention that the Black Panther is Warrior/King/Priest of the african hereditary meritocracy of Wakanda, the most technologically advanced nation on Earth? oh... well he is. peep this blog for more background) is visiting other countries since their recent wedding. after visiting Latveria, Atlantis, Attilan and Great Britain, Storm and T'challa's goodwill tour comes to Washington, DC. they aren't in the White House for very long before the president disrespects Storm... (oh no he didn't) and T'challa has to pull his card. now it's REALLY ON!

in this issue, T'challa punks the president, iron man and captain britain. all in a day's work for the greatest man alive!
