PREVIEW- "HELLBOY IN HELL" #6
HELL!! YES!!
owned an unbreakable grip on the top spot on my "buy pile." Despite the efforts of some very sincere and talented artists, I was never able to sustain any enthusiasm for Hellboy comics not drawn by Mignola. So as you can imagine, these elegant pages from the new Hellboy In Hell #1 and 2 got me very, very excited...
CRATE-DIGGIN': Hellboy In Africa
with Mignola and Richard Corben teaming up on Hellboy: The Bride of Hell this month (which i highly recommend, based on that free preview), I thought it was a good idea to dig up Corben's first time tackling everyone's favorite reluctant Beast of the Apocalypse, the 2 issue Hellboy: Makoma. This story was the first time Mignola let another artist draw his signature character, and son got his BEAST on: Corben drew the shit out of the flashback sequences in Africa, as well as smashing both covers. In addition to being just as adept as Mignola at action-horror comics, Corben brings a textured reality (or maybe surreality) to the story that is appropriate for Hellboy. The individual issues might set you back if you manage to track 'em down, but the mini is collected in Hellboy Vol 7: The Troll Witch and Other Stories ($12 and change on Amazon) which also features an otherwise unpublished Hellboy story by P. Craig Russell
. definitely something I could recommend for those who want more Corben and/or Hellboy in their life, and who doesn't?!holla!

Corben on HELLBOY? (drool...)
one of the best compliments i ever received as an artist was when a friend compared my art to that of horror comics legend Richard Corben. one of my favorite things to find when i'm crate-digging at conventions is a cool Corben comic. anyways, click the pic to peep Corben's quirky, gritty textures on Hellboy: The Bride of Hell. Corben provides the art, with story and cover by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and colors by the always awesome Dave Stewart. In Bride of Hell, a nineteen-year-old girl is kidnapped and Hellboy tracks her down to a remote clearing in France where she's about to be given to Asmodeus, in a strange tale of ghosts, demonic revenge, lost love, and King Solomon. hopefully, Hellboy fixes everything by tapping a monster's jaw with his giant stone hand! anyways, enjoy the preview and keep an eye out for Hellboy: The Bride of Hell, which drops in stores December 23rd.holla!

Rhymefest Flexes His COMICS Knowledge
Chicago by Rhymefest, directed by Konee Rock. Fest drops more superhero references than i've heard in a long time from any emcee not named MF DOOM (i mean, he said "I'm Hellboy, li'l boy, you like Elroy. I'm more like T'challa on steroids")
i'm sayin'... Rhymefest is tryin'a become my favorite rapper...

A Strange Tale
Do you have trouble choosing between wearing your Adam Warlock, Silver Surfer and Doctor Strange t-shirts? Ever wondered whether the Ultimate Nullifier is more powerful than the Anti-life Equation? Do you like questionable science fiction, trippy artwork, and mystical alien artifacts that have some undefined ability to save the universe... or maybe destroy it? If you answered "yes" to any of those questions, you pro'lly wanna check out Winston Blakely's Little Miss Strange.
Little Miss Strange stars Scorpia of Satu, protege of the mysterious council of dimension-hopping alien mages that adopted her after the death of her parents. One of their number has gone rogue, and only Scorpia can stop him from assembling a trio of relics that have the power to unravel the fabric of time and space. like Mike Mignola's Hellboy, Scorpia speaks in an everyman... er, everywoman's voice. while the other characters speak with theatrical flair, Scorpia's no-nonsense chatter comes off like she just stepped out of the beauty shop in your hood.
Blakely falls into a few traps. his page composition, while energetic, can get a little crowded. he doesn't use gutters between panels, and the figures break out of them frequently. these factors, when combined with a badly-placed word balloon here or there, sometimes encourages reading panels and dialogue in the wrong order. Still, the chaotic arrangements and the book's strong, old-school drawings are effective more often than not. fans of the genre will really appreciate the obvious passion Blakely puts into the book, and his humor is very disarming. if books in this genre (like Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, and Adam Warlock) have appealed to you in the past, you oughta enjoy this! cop it on Amazon.com.holla!

the ghettoManga Comic of the Year is PROOF, the story of a well-dressed Sasquatch, working for a government agency called The Lodge, which captures and cares for creatures whose existence otherwise remains unproven (also called Cryptids). while the idea of such an agency is well-tread (Hellboy, BPRD, Perhapanauts, etc.), PROOF stands out because of its exceptional writing and the devotion of the creative staff. PROOF is (GASP!) monthly and on-time. the story is engaging and filled with intrigue that makes it well worth picking up. 
Special Agent John Prufrock is interesting because he talks, thinks and behaves like a human being, even though he clearly knows he isn't one, yet he retains the desire to meet more of his kind. He is always immaculately dressed, as he was taught the art of men's fashion by... but that would be telling! check out Proof Volume 1: Goatsucker (v. 1)
