this drawing of Storm from the X-men is one of the pieces I'm hanging at the Janette Kennedy Gallery today as part of Underground: Dallas' Hidden Talents, the show I'm participating in courtesy of the fine folks of ArtLoveMagic.com. Prints will be available at the show, and at Dallas Comicon, which I will also be set up at that same weekend (because I'm insane in the membrane), longside my man Corance of the mighty GhostWerks crew. Anyways, I have been wanting to draw another Storm piece for a minute, and this show gave me the perfect excuse! hope y'all like it!

The next few GhettoManga Events
if you're gonna be in Dallas this Sunday from 11a-3p, you'll wanna swing by and see us at Malcolm's Swap Meet in Deep Ellum (click the pic for directions) where there will be tons of artists and musicians selling various t'ings just in time for your last minute holiday shopping. I'll have magazines, comics, books, prints and original art on sale there.
after that, it's back to the lab to prepare for Underground, the next big ArtLoveMagic event, at SouthSide on Lamar the last weekend of January. peep the flier for more info and expect more about this show as it gets closer. those that know the deal will wanna get their tickets now, while they're half price (i'm just sayin'... Don't be surprised if that show sells out before the day of...) also, that same weekend i will ALSO be at Dallas Comicon ('longside Corance, of the mighty GhostWerks crew), which i expect to kick major tail as well. Adam Hughes, Michael Golden, Jim Mahfood and Mark Brooks among others (like me!) will be in'a da place, so gird your loins for that joint!anyways, that's what's up. hope to see some of y'all out and about. otherwise, enjoy the holla day cheer!

Power Cosmic by Samax Amen, Khalid Robertson, Ben Moss, Josh Boulet, Michael Lagocki, David Rodriguez.much love to everybody who came out to O'reilly's for the H4 Toys For Tots benefit show on Sunday! in addition to being treated to good music and art (like the live freestyle art jam/collabo Power Cosmic that me and the other ArtLoveMagic artists in attendance smashed out while the proverbial band played on), we also rustled up a gang of toys and donations for the cause! anyways, hope everybody had a good weekend!

a little NOIR-FU for ya

you might not have heard of Dan Fu, but he's one of my favorite writer/artists. I've met him a few times over the years and have enjoyed his work, but he left the scene for a while. So one day, I just decided to Google his name to see if he had something out that I didn't know about, and sure enough I came upon his web-comic, The Retriever.
He bills it as a noir-fu comic, which sounds right up my alley. After reading the first 3 issues, I can say that this comic is pretty awesome!
The first thing that struck me when I started reading The Retriever, is how much Dan's art has improved. The first time I was exposed to his work was way back in the mid 90's when he did a short romantic story in an Antarctic Press anthology. Back then, his art was expressive and subtle, but light and a bit tentative. In The Retriever Dan seems to have surer footing. The black spots required by the noir atmosphere lend his art a weight and gravity without sacrificing the subtlety that entertains the eye. 
This subtlety can be most appreciated in the character design. The main character, Jackson Lau, is a cool Bruce Lee in a trench coat; but beyond him, the bad guys, supporting cast and even peripheral back-ground characters have designs that seem well thought out and distinctive. No throwaways for my boy Fu. The panel to panel storytelling is also strong, which serves the stories well. And it's the stories that are the real attraction here. As subtle and natural as Dan's renderings are, so is the writing. The dialogue is always funny and interesting, which serves a very rich cast. They go through stories that, at first, seem like your common private eye cases; until the twist endings, which are what really make this comic tic. And I hate to call them that because it makes it seem like a cheap trick, but the twists at the end of the stories are actually quite poignant. It's for that reason, I won't get into the specific events of the stories because you owe it to yourself to see them unfold with your own eyes.
But I will touch on the fight scenes; and yes, they do put the “fu” in noir-fu. Ya boy Jackson Lau got madd skillz! This fact is exhibited in the 1st issue in a very humorous, yet definite scene where he takes out a group of thugs led by a pretty tough brother. They way the fight went kinda caught me by surprise, in fact. So, if stories about people with madd skillz is your thing, here's some phat linkage for you: the-retriever.com

I hope he's wrong. I've always loved Allen Iverson. My Dad first turned me on to him. Dad's a fierce fan of Philadelphia Sports and loved Iverson for his tenacity, his drive, and his willingness to throw his body amidst defenders with much more size and strength. It had an affect on me to see how quickly my Dad became a dedicated Iverson fan, despite the cornrows, tattoos and thug attitude (all things I would typically expect my Pops to despise). At the end of the day, if you played fearlessly, with that much passion, nothing else mattered.
Monday night Allen Iverson will return as a player for the Philadelphia 76ers, in a game against his former Denver Nuggets. That game will be broadcast on NBATV. I've been following the news on AI for the past several weeks. I've been annoyed by a lot of bad sportswriting (many writers I was reading kept bringing up Philadelphia's proximity to Atlantic City- sigh). I've also been struck by how AI's former teamates and coaches from John Thompson, to George Karl, to Larry Brown, to Mello, to Eric Snow all have commented that they think AI should return to the league and can still contribute at a contending level.
I'm happy this story is returning to the city that it started in. Philly has great love for AI. As bad as things have gotten, this is a chance for him to return to a team where he has a legacy, and a lot of support. I'm happy for my Dad. Philly's been loosing a lot of games by one or two points lately. He'll be a lot happier when they start winning those games.
I'm throwing my bet behind AI's success: that he'll improve their game, will stabilize himself, and will still be there at the end of the season (maybe even in a playoff spot). I'm willing to make that bet, not just because it's possible, but because I'd really love to see it happen.Thinking about all this, I drew this portrait (based on an uncredited photo I found online).
