Comicbook World #37- Can you say 'Tactile Holograms'?

those brainy jokers in the land of the Rising Sun are at it again! Holograms you can touch, the technology that makes sci-fi movies and comics so cool, is about to go from virtual to reality.
"Up until now, holography has been for the eyes only, and if you'd try to touch it, your hand would go right through," says Tokyo University professor Hiroyuki Shinoda. "But now we have a technology that also adds the sensation of touch to holograms."
the new holograms they are developing will use ultrasonic vibrations to provide a sense of touch when a user interacts with a hologram. still in the rudimentary phases, researchers foresee practical applications like virtual switches in hospitals and other places where contamination is an issue. I can imagine that we might see holographic control panels on cell phones, computers and even cars that can be customized by the user... comics/movie nerds have already gotten used to seeing portable floating keyboards, and holographic concubines... what other applications can we look forward to with this?

I missed this one...

Click to Enlarge Jamie Hewlett's Member

for this week's ghettoManga T'ing of the Week we're spotlighting some fancy etched vibrators designed by that dude Jamie Hewlett (Gorillaz, Tank Girl). i gaffled this off'a Brandon Graham's (King City, Multiple Warhedz, Escalator) blog, where he was talking about comics artists freelancing on the side: "One of the main things that's important to me in making comics is to not compromise the actual pages I draw. So side work is the ideal way to actually make enough money and not end up drawing off a script you don't like because you need a good page rate and not hoping for a movie deal to bail you out. ya knaw? So, It's awesome to see dudes making impressive work out of the side gigs."
it's been my observation that if you watch any comics artist long enough, you will see them do side gigs. and lots of people use that as an excuse to stop doing comics altogether (the money in illustrating is waaaay better than drawing comics... and easier money), so it's good to hear an artist who puts it in perspective and (in my opinion) has his priorities in order! either way, these joints by Hewlett are awesome! the innuendo in the copy is hilarious, and of course the drawing is splendid. don't ask me where to get them, ladies (or gentlemen...), i just work here. get your google on!

why wasn't Transformers like THIS --->

Optimus Prime by *TimKelly
the new Transformers film franchise is alright, (actually, i still ain't seen part 2) but i still think the robot designs are not iconic and memorable, the way the original designs were. one of the best things about the original cartoon designs was that each robot LOOKED like it turned into a car or airplane or whatever! you could see the tires and the windshields and the doors, etc and that was just cool! wish the designs would'a been more like this joint! that would have been better... combining the desire for real-world mechanical complexity with the more iconic and recognizable design of the original toy/cartoon. what do you think?

T'Challa by Eric Canete

Eric Canete is so good at drawing, it will make you cry. when you see what he can draw in 90 minutes, it will cripple your self esteem... then, you will remember that no one is asking you to draw this good, this fast. you'll have a glass of Kool-Aid and feel much better about just being who you are, and doing what you do. anyways, peep this pic he did of T'challa, the Black Panther. dope ain't it?

MAYHEM fans get it EARLY!

the 3rd issue of Tyrese Gibson's ultraviolent hit comic MAYHEM! is due to land in stores on October 7th, but according to his twitter blast, the books are available to those that wanna get a leg up right now through Meltdown Comics. here's the sales pitch:
Broken and beaten, Mayhem is back to take out Big X and the Four Corners once and for all. An assault by righteousness on evil, from ground floor to penthouse, which will run Mayhem through the ringer, putting all his skill to the ultimate test!
as my readers probably remember, MAYHEM! #1 broke the single store record for issues sold through Meltdown this summer, and the relationship continues to pay dividends for both Tyrese's team and the Meltdown crew, who proudly proclaim on their website that they'll ship your comic anywhere in the world. you can call the store at 323 851.7223 or hit 'em up at if that's how you get down.

Breathe Slow by Mars ILL w/JAX (RIP)
good morning party people! just figured i'd bless you with some quality hip hop once again. one of my absolute favorite hip hop crews -the "he's the deejay, i'm the rapper" combination of Manchild and Dust known together as Mars ILL- dropped this jewel a few years ago, but Breathe Slow off their sophomore LP Backbreakanomics never gets old. it's an anthem for the downtrodden and underappreciated that'll remind you to "take what's meant for you, no longer survive on what's passed down... win or lose you'll live your life knowing you never backed down." if those ain't words to live by, i don't know any...

What'chall Know about Slaughterhouse?

i haven't spent much time worrying about Slaughterhouse [the bi-coastal super group made up of Joe Budden, Crooked I, Royce Da 5-9, and Joell Ortiz... and their new album of the same name], but when i heard the song Salute on the Revolutionary Times blog, i had to pause... the track features an ominous vocal hook by the mighty Pharoahe Monch, whose bluesy crooning stylee is dope enough to make me worry that he might stop rapping like every other dope emcee with a li'l singing ability. at any rate, Slaughterhouse appears to be nice. hell, Crooked I could hold my attention all by himself, so i might have to get this album... does anybody have this already? let me know what's up with it... should i buy it?

"Unconscionability" Tees by Dawn Okoro are GO!

if you were smart enough to pre-order one of these fly a$$ teeshirts by superduperfly painter/art goddess Dawn Okoro like i told you to, then breathe easy, because your Tees are back from the printer and on the way, according to Dawn's blog. If you procrastinated and forgot, head over and see if she has extras you can scam. Tell her samax from ghettoManga sent you... it probably won't help you any, but it will help reinforce in her mind that i heart me some her! it looks like she enjoyed doing the shirts, so lets hope we see more tees and other fashionable t'ing from the lovely Mistress Okoro in the future!

Roc is survived by his wife, 3 lovely daughters, and mother. our prayers are with his family, friends, and fans. he was 37.

ADDICTIVE Animated Beat Box website!

I'm a sucker for beatboxing and cool website design. so when my boy Khalid sent me a link to the website of French beatboxer The Incredible Polo, i was instantly hooked. see, that dude Polo supplied various beats and verbal sound effect loops that you can mix and match to create your own interactive beatboxtrumentals (or just put it on shuffle for DOPE extended background music)... you can even download that joint for your desktop! click the pic to try it!

Comicbook World #36 - Carrot Top: Villain in the Making?

is it just me, Or does comedian Carrot Top seem like he's turning into a supervillain? last time i saw him, he was a skinny little dude who did gag comedy with props (because i guess he thought the world needed another Gallagher?), now he looks like a failed super-soldier test subject... so i was watching teevee the other day and saw him on a Burger King commercial looking like death warmed over! it went by so fast, i didn't notice that he had arms the size of tree trunks! it's understandable that someone in the entertainment biz would try to beef up to broaden their appeal for movie and teevee roles, but Carrot Top has the look of something a little more sinister... maybe years of movie role rejections and an impromptu ass-kicking by a buff heckler drove the wiry redheaded funnyman over the edge! when he turned to an evil pro-wrestling promoter for "something extra" to help him bulk up fast, they must'a gave him a bad cocktail of experimental hormones and steroids... i think we are witnessing the birth of a supervillain here! like that moment after Norman Osborne exposes himself to the chemicals, but before he puts on the Green Goblin mask for the first time? when chuckles' arms swelled up on him and burst through his shirts sleeves on some Hulk shit, i bet he choked the life out of the chemist and said "Back to formula?" you may think you're gonna get away with it, Carrot Top... but i'm wise to your ass...

free Spider-Woman Preview

the last time i read a comicbook series Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev did together, it was so hard it made me feel obligated to watch a Daredevil movie that starred Ben Affleck (YEAH! it was THAT good!). well, i don't care HOW good this new Spider-Woman comic is, i ain't watching anymore bad movies on purpose. anyways, now that i got that business outta the way, click the pic for a preview of Bendis and Maleev on Spider-Woman, which hits your comic shop Wednesday, September 23rd cuzzo!

New DOOM teeshirts, Interview

StonesThrow Records got these fresh Tees based on the classic Madvillain (MF DOOM and Madlib) collabo video ALL CAPS. they got the villainous imagery in white or black, to keep your boat floatin' in all seasons... give that joint to your favorite bare-chested rapper, so he can stop embarrassing himself for the Man. for those newbies who don't understand the hubbub surrounding the villain, peep some YouTube heat courtesy of StonesThrow...

ALL CAPS by Madvillain (MF DOOM and Madlib)
if you just can't get enough DOOM, pick up a copy of The New Yorker which has a great interview with the Villain. or, if you're like me, click the pic to read a generous excerpt off the StonesThrow blog, instead! they bravely encroach on DOOM's inner sanctum in the ATL and sit at the foot of the underground superstar to ask him all manner of questions... including inquiries into some of his recent villainous activities (sending his DOOMbots to lipsynch at shows, for example). He also speaks on his history as a recording artist and the new Madvillain record. peep that...

Samurai Jack Cutout (Cartoon Network Promo) from Bent Image Lab on Vimeo. peep this promo by Chel White. as you may know, i'm a huge fan of the super-stylized Samurai Jack cartoon, so i jumped on this when i saw it yesterday!

word has it that Kevin Smith's homeboy and producing partner Scott Mosier has teamed up with ghettoManga Award-Winning Cartoonist and Illustrator Jim Mahfood to pitch a new kids' cartoon show (yeah, i know...) that the newly Marvelous house of mouse accepted. Food is already known to fans of the Askewniverse for his work on the Clerks comic for Oni Press. Mosier let word slip about the show's acceptance on his podcast, but hasn't given any details about the show so far. just thought i'd give props to FOOD ONE! for more info on Jim Mahfood, go here.

Comicbook World # 35- College Student Kills Burglar with Samurai Sword

East Warrior by Nudition
After being victimized once before (thieves reportedly got him and his roommates for their laptops and a Sony PlayStation), an undergraduate medical student at Baltimore's prestigious Johns Hopkins University went all Rurouni Kenshin on Tuesday, killing a burglar with a samurai sword after he caught the intruder in his garage, police said. The student will not likely be charged with anything if the burglar's death is ruled self-defense.
Ronin by Maverik
Police received a call for help at 1:20 am after the burglar pried open a side-door into the garage of the house, which four students rented off-campus, according to Baltimore police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. "They asked him to stop and while they called police, the suspect lunged at the student. He then retaliated by striking him with a samurai sword, severed his left hand and gave severe lacerations to the upper torso," he said. "I think everyone has the right to first of all defend themselves and defend their home and if this individual felt that a samurai sword was an appropriate tool to do so, I'm not in a position to say that's good or bad," Guglielmi said.
Africana is Samurai by Evilyn81
Could this be a sign of things to come? could gun-control laws turn the samurai sword into the hot home invasion deterrent? Will rappers start toting them, till they have to be blurred out of rap vids on MTV? after reading about this on the AFP, i was definitely thinking about copping one of those samurai longswords those stinky guys are always selling at comic and anime conventions! i've been thinking about taking martial arts classes, but maybe swordsmanship might be needed as well. hmmm... i wonder if one of those stinky dudes can get me a blade that looks like the Green Destiny...

The Blast (ALI!)

gotta give a shout out to my dude Wallruss for posting this Ali joint. peep the full post on his Black Superhero blog! classic material!

RIP Patrick Swayze

according to his publicist, actor Patrick Swayze (Dirty Dancing, Roadhouse, Ghost) died Monday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 57. "Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months," according to the press release. Swayze achieved hip hop immortality when when the word "swayze" became synonymous with ghost (to bounce, to be out or leave suddenly), after his role opposite Demi Moore in the Oscar-winning date movie Ghost. for more on the actor, go here.

Expect the Unexpected

artwork and press release for DOOM's compilation disc Unexpected Guests, which is due to drop October 27th. this would be a GREAT look for all those fans out there new to the supervillainous emcee and beatsmith that needs to be in everybody's top ten. expect more on this as the blessed day approaches, minions!

DOOM is one of the most original and uncompromising voices in hip-hop. From his work in the 90’s with the seminal KMD to his legendary releases under a variety of aliases including MF Doom, Madvillain, King Geedorah, Viktor Vaughn, Dangerdoom & more, his prolific body of work has always valued artistic integrity and creativity over anything else. As numerous and varied as his albums are, DOOM also has a thick catalog of guest appearances, remixes, non-album tracks, & vinyl only singles. For the first time, Unexpected Guest presents many of these hard to find tracks as a mix CD, executed and overseen by the Super Villain himself.

With a list of co-conspirators which includes marquee level names such as Talib Kweli, Ghostface & GZA as well as underground heroes Vast Aire, CountBass D & Kurius, the music on this disc highlights DOOM’s ever-present trademark wit and taste for raw and ominous beats. On “Trap Door,” he spits couplets like “No curse words / DOOM the worst church nerd verse heard” over a plucked bass and guitar line from producer Jake One that sounds like the funkiest spy movie soundtrack imaginable. “Sniper Elite” sees the emcee united with the late J Dilla, and is one of the many tracks featured that has yet to see an official CD release. The album will also feature a never before heard live version of DOOM’s classic “I Hear Voices” from the Operation Doomsday album.

Peppered with his signature comic book dialogue and vintage sound clips, Unexpected Guests presents a treasure trove of DOOM obscurities which should shed light on material that even some hardcore fans may have missed. It’s a frenetic, virtuosic look at a true hip-hop original.

develope Styles with a DEATH Device Cooked in

We're Famous by Aesop Rock f/El-Producto
yo... up late drawing again. despite serious caffeination, i was having trouble getting going tonight until the rotation hit We're Famous off'a Aesop Rock's brilliant underground opus Bazooka Tooth, at which time it was off to the races! this is my shit, mostly for the autobiographical first verse by Def Jux founder El-P. 'Sop and El are mostly beefing with L7, Eso or some other dudes in their crew... but that's not why i like this song. this joint has two gritty emcees who pretty much cut a path in the underground and mastered the art of being obscure and famous at the same time. on this song, they revel in it, and diss cats just for the fun of it, over a beat that's old school and futuristic at the same time! i remember bumping this a few years ago when i was dating this chick from houston, who could not understand why i was geeking over these two white dudes from new york! she was listening to David Banner and Li'l Flip at the time, so i understood why she didn't get it, but for a cat like me who's been working hard at being an overnight underground success for ten years, this joint hit me right in the chest!
well, i gotta get back to work...

Brotherman's Origin

Girl on Girl

i got free previews of Black Panther #9 and The Sword #19 for the people! first, the new Black Panther gets her struggle on against some chick named Predator while dodging bullets and explosions (and looking good doing it). goes with the job sister... i've been enjoying Black Panther since the relaunch. The new Panther has her predecessor's sharp attitude, and i must say i'm intrigued by what they're doing with T'challa (the previous Black Panther) behind the scenes, too. click the pic for a preview of this issue, which drops October 7th.

Meanwhile, everbody's favorite red-headed killing machine Dana Breighton has already merked two of the three immortal elemental siblings who murdered her family, but it looks like their sister Malia is the smartest and deadliest of the three! if you've never read The Sword, this preview can't do anything to prepare you for how good it is, so do yourself a favor and cop the trade paperbacks collecting the series so you can catch up! still, you may as well read this preview anyways! The Sword is my favorite book in years... The Lunas know how to craft a good story that will have you biting your nails (not easy to do while holding a comicbook, i don't mind telling you...), and shocks you by snapping from 0 to 60 in an instant. anyways, The Sword #19 will be in stores September 17th

Angry Black Man On A Elevator by Rhymefest.
i heard this banger a while back, and i'll say now what i said then: this is a DEAL MAKER!!! if this is on 'Fest's upcoming album El Che (or any other record for that matter), i'm BUYING that joint! a GUARANTEED SALE! and you can QUOTE me on that! Li'l Jon uses his powers for good instead of evil on the beat, and Rhymefest slings lyrics with the best of 'em...

Bring On the Bad Guys

this preview of MAYHEM! #2 gives us a look at the bad guy muscle seen on the Jim Lee TPB artwork, after the first issue focused on the title character and his gal pal. i haven't made it out to the comic shop since i'm in deadline delivery mode, but you can bet your (fill in your favorite body part) that i'm copping that joint when i get to the store! as for now, click the pic to peep the 5 page preview! even though Tyrese is offering the comic on iTunes now for all you tech-wizards, but i can't slap my cockerspaniel on the nose with an iPod when she wakes the baby, now can i? well, i guess i could, but PETA would have federal agents all up in my crib, an nobody wants that, so i'll cop the print issues.

D. Original

here's the unreleased Afro Samurai pilot, leaked by that dude LeSean Thomas from the safety of his new digs in Seoul, Korea. The original Pilot was produced by MADHOUSE animation studios, and directed by Takeshi Koike (Animatrix: World Record, Dead leaves, Trava Fist Planet) in 2003. eventually, Samuel Jackson got hold of the film and TV rights to it, and as a result Spike TV tapped it for production by GONZO instead. the rest (as they say) is history.

Chef TV

that new Raekwon is in stores today! if you didn't already know...
that's all.

New Champ Fan Art!

here's a cool fan art pic of the Champ by that dude DARNELL G. KIRNON.
when our new Champion of Children book comes out, we'll include this joint! he sent me this a while back, but i forgot to post it. Darnell is nice with the tools of the trade (you remember his piece from the DOOM Art Contest right? no worries, it'll be in your copy of the magazine you preordered...). you can check out more of his art (like his dope comic Inner City Blues) here.

MegaSean Don

Mega-Sean”... also cop a few more free joints for your players, plairs:Boostin Mobiles and DuckDown ft. Skyzoo & Torae. these are off Sean's upcoming mixtape Kimbo Price, which that dude Dallas Penn called "the antidote to the skinny jeans emo rap that plays all day every day on your radios"...

Once Again, It's On...

that dude Tyrese is making plenty noise with his comic MAYHEM! over at Image. the first issue broke the single-store sales record and his online hype machine had so many people calling one store that the owner was turning fans away! well, get ready for round two, as MAYHEM! #2 hits comic shops Wednesday, September 9th. of course, Tyrese's team is already taking pre-orders too at their website, so get it how you want it...
anyways, never one to rest on his achievements, the singer/actor has leaked the cover for issue #3 with art by that dude Jim Lee and colors by Alex Sinclair (seen here on the right, click to enlarge). now he has also announced plans for a romance book called Lovesick that i'm especially interested in, because it will be directed right at his existing fan base... so expect more news on that as i get it. in fact, it looks like i will get a chance to do a phone interview with Tyrese about his comics, movies and whatever else i decide to talk to him about pretty soon... when i talked to him yesterday, he told me some stuff (that i'm not allowed to discuss yet) about his future plans that will raise the eyebrows of fans, critics and haters alike, so stay tuned fam!
