look who's RASLin'...

a heads up from Mike Lagocki
RASL Volume 1: The Drift came out this week.
It's an oversized edition of the first 122 pages of the new comic saga from the creator of BONE. This is a gorgeous volume and to be only $13 at this size is too good to pass up. [NOTE: i found it on amazon for under $11... click the link or the pic on the left!]

The quick skinny:
This is NOT Bone. RASL is a very strange story about a dimension hopping art theif, his loves, his addictions, and the strange "lizard face man" who's been following him from one dimension to the other, trying to kill him. It's fast, creative, edgy sci-fi.

This was my favorite book of 2008. I love the boldness of it, and for the creator of BONE to be doing something this far out there is really inspiring to me. It really feels like a book by an artist/writer who's made his mark, and is now just having a blast. The art is of course clasic Jeff Smith ('nuff said). You can be sure that the same beautiful rendering that worked for Bone, works for this kind of book too.

I had heard that Smith's original plan was to publish RASL very large, maybe even 11x12. Ultimately they went with standard comics size for the individual issues, so it's great to see that the trade was printed with such large pages (it's about magazine size).

Skip a meal this week, this one's worth it.

-Mike Lagocki is one-fifth of the mighty ghostWerks crew, as well as being the driving force behind the pleasantly notorious art activist massive called ArtLoveMagic, dedicated to overcoming Evil with good art.

gMA Nominees, anyone?

okay, i need your help!
it's that time of the year again, let's pick the nominees for the 2008 ghettoManga Awards!
i want to announce my nominees this weekend, so be quick about it!
  • remember, material with 2008 released dates automatically qualify, but material released in late 2007, still buzzing in 08 is still eligible.
  • current work gets 'em in. in some cases, the catalog will help tip the scales.
  • you can give multiple nominees, but please rank them for me, so i can tell who you like most.
  • reflect YOUR opinion, don't try to pick the Oscar/Grammy/Eisner winner. you can argue after the fact.
  • after nominees are named, polls will be posted that encourage voting.
  • relevance to hip hop culture (for movies, comics, etc) is nice, but not totally necessary.

peep the categories and the rules below and reply here or send your list to ghettomanga@gmail.com

Best Comic Award
comics in any genre or format. must have at least three issues in print (for monthlies), or a comparable amount if on the web.
TPB of the Year
(Trade Paper Back) collections of previously published material (from print ot web), at least 60 pages long.
OGN of the Year
(Original Graphic Novel) original comics (or manga) of any genre or format,
ongoing series or one-shot, at least 60 pages long.
Emcee of the Year
this is a spitting award. these nominees may be male or female, totally unknown or almost famous, part of a group, or solo... but they gotta have the gift. forward mp3's youTube Videos, or website links...
Rapper of the Year

all these people have 1) a record deal on a major label, or 2) heavy, heavy rotation. they are in major stores nationwide (selling records is a whole 'nother matter...).
even if you didn't BUY their record, strong showings on guest shots, video shows, ring tones, youTube, etc can get the knod. make a case by sending links to youTube joints, email me a mp3 or transcribe his/her illest 16
Vocalist of the Year
singers, or singer-songwriter in any genre. dope pipes and lyrics. major label or indie, but must have a record available for purchase in 2008.
HipHop/Rap Group of the Year
major or unkown groups are eligible. please send mp3s or youTube links or something. if you assume i know who you're talkin' about... well, you know...
Artist/Illustrator of the Year
relevant artists working for pay, whether for self, agencies, for major figures or on the side. whether these are cats getting their art grind on!
Cartoonist of the Year
animators or sequential artists who wreck shop. writer-artists get preference, but pencillers and inkers will get considered too. who they work for is less important than what they create.
Video of the Year
dope music video. creativity, camera direction, costumes... and a good song doesn't hurt either!
Album of the Year
the best damn hip hop record, period.
Movie of the Year
i got my nominees already, but make your case and i'll change 'em...
Champion of Children Award
this award goes to the best product (comics, cartoon, music, whatever) made for (or maybe BY) the shorties.
Man/Woman of the Year
who had an impact, not just in his/her area of expertise, but across the board. nominate any artist, musician, actor or other public figure you want. (past nominees include Mos Def, Jay Z, Bono, KRS ONE, and Senator Obama)

remember, reply here or send your list to ghettomanga@gmail.com

Deviant of the Day

i guess it's kinda unfair to use animation heavyweight LeSean Thomas (Boondocks, Ben 10, Street Fighter, Arkanium) as the Deviant of the Day, but he's one of the cats i lurk on at DeviantArt.com, so i'ma do it anyways! he's passionate about his craft and about the artform of comics (although he mostly reads foreign comics), and has the attitude and work ethic that all practioners of the ghettoManga arts oughta take to heart.

2008 ghettoManga Awards Nominees: Movie of the Year

movie of the Year rules: if it was out this year, it qualifies. look, i don't check release dates, and i have a tendancy to get to things late... so i don't worry about none o' that! if i geeked on it this year, it qualifies! so any movie (including animated features, if they are FLY enough!) that was out in theatres, on teevee, or on dvd qualifies...
anyways, here's the nominees:

i wrote a fairly well-received review of Kung-Fu Panda earlier this year, and upon re-reading it, i stand by what i wrote. this movie impressed me with its ability to entertain kids and adults simultaneously, and i enjoyed the comedic style more than previous Dreamworks animated films like Shrek. i have surprisingly little interest in the 3D animation explosion, but can put the cap on my Haterade long enough to acknowledge such a well-conceived and executed story.

Chris Nolan's original onscreen version of the world's greatest detective did what other superhero films WISH they could: Batman Begins actually added to the mystique of DC's line-walking vigilante! so when the Joker card was pulled at the end, the sequel buzz immediately began. The untimely death of Heathe Ledger only made it worse... his turn as the ultimate psycho clown prince of crime has fanboys and girls crying Oscar, so how could i pass by the record-smashing hero noir The Dark Knight?
before Lyndsy Lohan or Paris Hilton ever got their hands around a cold gold can, Robert Downey Jr brought addiction back in a big way, risking the ruin of a brilliant acting career on both the big and small screens, so who better to play the alcoholic thrill-seeking genius Tony Stark, the invincible Iron Man? Director John Favreau shocked the comics faniverse with the widescreen debut of everyone's favorite shell-head Avenger, not to mention more than a few easter-eggs that still have nerds buzzing!
unless you don't get out much, you've probably watched a movie where Chiwetel Ejiofor (Inside Man, American Gangster, Serenity, Talk To Me, Four Brothers, Children of Men) gave a stellar performance. but you haven't really seen what he's capable of until you've seen Redbelt.
Ejiofor deserves to be the next important black movie star. he is always believable, as a villain or a sidekick, or here, as a wise martial arts Sensei who seeks to teach his students how to turn any situation to their advantage. if you haven't seen this... SEE IT!
Marvel Comics has got it right: go get a good script. attach top-notch actors, and get out of the way! The Incredible Hulk, an apology to fans who really hated Ang Lee's psychological analysis of the gamma irradiated monster, served up more action and a decent love story, plus more of Hulk smashing people, places and things. Ed Norton and Tim Roth brought serious acting pedigree, and a quick cameo by Downey's Tony Stark helped continue the now-confirmed rumors that Marvel's building a full-blown Marvel Movie Universe (tee-hee!)...
don't let the box-office fool you: Speed Racer is the BOMB! those silly Wachowski Brothers (The Matrix trilogy) return to their director's chairs to bring us one of the best family movies that no families went and saw. a troublesome marketing program (or lack thereof...), confused fan and critical reaction, and the unexpected super-success of Iron Man contributed to serious tanking of this film. but believe me when i tell you, it is a visionary film! the Wachowskis do justice to the precursor to the anime invasion, creating a film that celebrates the best aspects, not only of the Speed Racer cartoon, but other 'toons like it.

any of these wold make great additions to your DVD collection, and you probably wanna see 'em all! that said, there can be only one winner... The 2008 ghettoManga Awards will jump off next month, so stay tuned for more nominees!

the New Moon is upon us!

ghettoManga Cartoonist of the Year for 2007 Ross Campbell returns with the next chapter of his opus OGN series Wet Moon. in Wet Moon 4:Drowned in Evil, Campbell returns us once again to the sticky southern town of Wet Moon, where we will witness forbidden romance, secret pasts, adventures in babysitting, and a masked vigilante makes her first appearance. Wet Moon 4: Drowned In Evil hits stores tomorrow, November 12 in fine comic shops and book stores everywhere, or you can order the next installment of this splendid graphic novel series here. "thanks to everyone who's pre-ordered it already, i really appreciate it!!" says the author "volume 4 is where things start to get crazier for everyone, and things begin to take a dark turn..." IF you have still never read it (despite my constant recommendations!), cop Wet-Moon: Feeble Wanderings here.

Between Barak and a Hard Place

I've been noticing hostility surrounding the election of the new president. an election that did not require the recounting of votes, or the deployment of the national guard, or the intervention of the supreme court... people continue to assert that President-Elect Obama is somehow less American than they are, or that he is going to "ruin" the economy or "lose" the war(s)... in short, people are scared. they are scared of what Obama represents. they are scared of change. they are scared of the future...

tough.

because the future is coming, whether you want it or not. you better buy Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley and I Love Lucy on DVD (or BluRay, if you got it like that), because the 1950's are long dead, and they are never coming back. the majority of voters (and a large majority of polling respondents) has spoken. this election was a war of ideologies between the past and the future, and the future won. to all the haters: your only hope now is to work with us, so that it's a future you can stand to live in.
or not... after all, it IS a free country.

Food Strikes Again...

Jim Mahfood strikes comics gold with his new 2 part mini Kick Drum Comix. i saw the 2nd issue on the new comics rack this week and couldn't resist snagging both issues. whether going for shock-and-awe, skater nostalgia, or sci-fi parody, 'Food uses a splashy, messy style to compliment stories that have a spontaneous, off-the-dome feel. on this go-round, Food One enlists the aid of friends who add magnificent, trippy color to these imaginitive stories of hip hop gone horribly wrong.

even as a fan of his work, i've always found Food to be more bold in content than in style, but this shows a leap in execution, with Food leaving it all on the court (sorry about the NBA metaphor, i just watched a double-header...). Food's first original comix in a minute turns out to be his most daring as an artist!
Kick Drum Comix, a 2 issue miniseries from Image, is in stores now... COP IT!
