End of an Era...

As I mentioned in SUNDAY COMICS, it was recently announced that the hit comic The Walking Dead is officially over, with the release of issue 193.

Before The Walking Dead turned Kirkman into a television personality, he launched a few comic books (including his sci-fi space hero comic Tech Jacket), looking to expand on the success of what was (at that time) the feel-good story of his career: Invincible. Of course, when AMC turned his post- zombie- apocalyptic opus into a small-screen smash, his priorities shifted along with his tax bracket.  Freed from the need to write a gajillion books to keep the lights on, Kirkman has gone mogul, hiring writers to keep the secondary titles rolling.
Tech Jacket is pretty fresh. Post-Kirkman, the ongoing Tech Jacket series is written by Joe Keatinge (Glory) with art by Khary (rhymes with Atari) Randolph (Starborn, Charismagic). Peep...

Kirkman + Stelfreeze + Silvestri = HELLS YEAH!

HOLY CRAP! This is freakin' HARDBODY*!!! And I would say that even if it WASN'T written by Robert Kirkman and drawn by Brian Stelfreeze (but it is, and that makes it even more so!). The Silvestri cover doesn't suck either...

IN STORES TODAY- Invincible #89

If this was DC or Marvel, they would have teased it for a year in advance and then relaunched it... Just saying...

PREVIEW- Invincible #83

There isn't any fighting in this 5 page preview of Invincible #83. Still, this is one of the best previews I have read in a long time. Superb writing and art that addresses all the conflicts (physical and otherwise) that are likely to erupt in this issue.

I haven't read Invincible for a while, but I feel safe saying it's still the best superhero comic in the universe, not just because it has characters like Dinosaurus (above), but also because of the moments like the pages below...

I am immune to peer pressure. I didn't start reading The Walking Dead even though all my friends were raving about it. I mean, an ongoing zombie comic? Yawn. But then they put a sister with a samurai sword taking her jawless pet zombies for a walk on the cover. You know what happened next...

PREVIEW- Superpatriot: America's Fighting Force TPB

 For all the Invincible fans who missed it when it originally came out, this was Kirkman and Cory Walker's first Image book, revisiting Erik Larsen's Savage Dragon spinoff Superpatriot.

(this one rocks- Noh Var with brilliant Bachallo art- even for Bachallo fans, this one's off the chain. Some of his very best work. whooooo- bring on the new Captain Marvel)

X Force Annual #1
(X Force Annual? Really?) Yes. This mug is written by Robert Kirkman (Invincible) and drawn by... (wait for it)... Body Bags maestro Jason Pearson!!! Since Pearson only draws a full story between ice ages, you might not want to miss this gem. It's a Wolverine one shot- gritty and grimy.

Both came out this week and are on your local comic shop shelves now (but may not be for long, cause each is better than they should be and retailers probably under-ordered)
