New Art, Dallas WebComics Expo, and other stuff...

happy Friday everybody (even though it's the 13th)! I've been keeping busy doing commissions and getting ready for the Dallas Webcomics Expo, which takes place in Plano,TX this Saturday. I'm going primarily to find new webcomics and stuff to talk about on this blog, but i'll also be at a table 'longside my man Corance of the mighty GhostWerks crew, and we'll be happy to sell comics, magazines and assorted t'ing. I'll have several new prints like this SWEET drawing of Panda from Jason Pearson's Body Bags i completed while you were sleeping last night! for those who can make it out here's a map where we will be at below.

I'll be selling the 8 x 11 prints (i got this Spiderman joint, plus Batman and Superman prints on deck as well) for $10 each at the show, and probably doing some commission sketches too. I know not everyone can make it out to one of our shows, so if you're looking to get a drawing, convention prices are in effect for the Holla Day season. For everyone who couldn't make it to San Diego, Dallas is having it's own version. Dallas Comic-Con will be at the Richardson Civic-Center on August 15-16, and the mighty Ghostwerks Crew will be in attendance. I've been to this one quite a few times and it's always fun. I'm really looking foreward to this year because one of my favorite people in comics, Brian Stelfreeze will be there, along with Jason Pearson, Bill Sienkiewicz, and local greats Erick Reeves, Josh Howard and pretty much everybody else in comics who's tight. So if you're in the metroplex August 15-16, stop by and holler at us. Anyone who comes to the GhostWerks table and yells "GhostWerks is tha skwod!!!" at the top of their lungs gets a free ghettoManga keychain!

One Wrecks, the other DESTROYS!

Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker (creators of Invincible) have reunited to work on The Destroyer for the Marvel MAX line. because MAX is a mature reader line, they'll be able to bring the ultra-violent brand of comicbook storytelling that Kirkman sprinkles all over his creator-owned books like Invincible, The Walking Dead, and The Astounding Wolfman. Kirkman has done other books for Marvel, but appears to be especially geeked to work on The Destroyer. "[the Destroyer is] touted as being Stan Lee's first comic creation, so I thought that aspect was very cool." said the writer in an interview over at CBR. "It's my favorite thing that I've done at Marvel and I've only written one script so far," he remarked. "I'm really thrilled with this series."

The Destroyer is about a WWII-era superhero who has been fighting crime for decades. upon discovering he is dying, he decides to hunt down and kill each and every one of his villains so they won't be able to plague the world after he is gone... and if you think an eighty-year-old superhero can't get busy, just click any picture to view preview pages. This really reminds me of the movie Watchmen, and that's a good thing (if you haven't read my Watchmen review, go here)!

The Destroyer written by Kirkman, with art by Cory Walker and covers by Jason Pearson, is set to debut in September, so keep your eyes peeled fam! peep the interview with Kirkman and preview art by Cory Walker to tide you over...

Classic Material: Blood and Guts, by Jason Pearson

one of my favorite artists is Jason Pearson. as much as any i can think of, his writing and drawing style exemplifies the term "ghettoManga"... one of my earliest exposures to his work is Dragon: Blood & Guts, where Pearson utilizes his penchant for portraying gratuitous sex and violence in a world that is accustomed to lots of both, the world of Erik Larsen's signature creation The Savage Dragon.

Blood & Guts focuses on the super-strong Dragon's return to the chicago police from his self-imposed retirement (he's been mourning the death of his girlfriend... despite being green, having only two toes on each foot, and sporting a fin on his dome, chicks dig the Dragon...) to help protect a federal witness against the super-powered mob hitman, Grip. of course, if it were as simple as walking her into the courthouse, i wouldn't be writing this. there is plenty of shooting, punching, and of course, dying. good times... even this early in his career, Pearson had already mastered telling this kind of story.

Dragon: Blood & Guts will not change your life, but if you like ultra-violent, anime-style action, Image-era superheroes, or green dudes who bed fly women, COP IT!

Another doomed Invasion...

In case you haven't been reading Marvel lately, the Skrulls have invaded, and all the heroes missed it,because the Skrulls are sneaky, shape-changing bastards!!! i didn't write this to sell you on the crossover or anything... but you NEED to cop Black Panther #39, part one of See Wakanda and Die. not only does it sport the ultra-keen Jason Pearson cover seen above, but the beautiful art of Jefte Palo is so good, it'll make you slap somebody!
so anyways, the Skrull Invasion has hit the motherland... The Skrulls have landed in Wakanda, fiendin' ta get their li'l green mitts on the tiny African nation's supply of the super-rare Vibranium... the only problem? they slept on the King of said African nation: T'challa the Black Panther! T'challa's forces and the Skrull invaders neutralize each other's technology, so all he and his countrymen have to deal with is being outnumbered three to one. "In other words," says T'challa, "we've got them right where we want them..."

quickie CAPE report

yes, i AM fly in my "True and Livin" hoodie. don't hate, emulate!
CAPE was a blast! i mean, i really had fun. the weather was very good this year (cool in the morning, but warming up in the afternoon), and many neighborhood folks strolled over to the show at Craddock Park out of pure curiosity! of course, tons of fans turned out to meet comics stars like Mark Waid, Jason Pearson, Gail Simone and Bryan Hitch... and they were nice enough to stop at my table for a minute, too! i took the opportunity to sell copies of Spontaneous, Mine All Mine, and the ghostWerks classics Champion Of Children Afterschool Special, Champion Of Children: The Legend of Challenge, and the extra-splendid ghostWerksComics anthology.

CAPE is coming...

the comic book industry has branded the first saturday in May as "Free Comic Book Day", best observed in the city of Dallas at CAPE, the comics and pop-culture expo. CAPE 4 (peep www.CapeDay.com) takes place on Saturday May 3rd at Craddock Park from 10am-6pm in the heart of Dallas. This festival of comic and comic art includes more than 80 comic book writers and artists for a free afternoon in the park. With several thousand attendees and over seven thousand free comics, CAPE has grown to be the world's largest Free Comic Book Day event.

"It's an incredible honor for my hometown to recognize my work and the work of my peers while we reach out to the community for CAPE," said Scott Kurtz, CAPE host and creator of the web strip PVP, which will be celebrating its 10th anniversary at CAPE. The marriage of the two prominent PVP characters will be marked at the event by a wedding guest's registry book. "I would like to invite all of my fans and the CAPE attendees to sign the guest book for Brent and Jade," said Kurtz.

This year's list of CAPE guest comic book artists and writers includes new additions Daniel Way, (Wolverine Origins and Ghost Rider) and Andy Kuhn (Firebreather and Marvel Team-Up). They join industry giants Mark Waid, Chynna Clugston, Robert Kirkman, Greg Pak, Jason Pearson, Gail Simone and David Mack. With over 80 guests, CAPE! just keeps getting bigger and bigger! i'll definitely be there this year, peddling my new book, Spontaneous. mention this blog and i'll hook you up with a free sketch! what have i been thinking? i got a blog called ghettoManga, a stated purpose to hip the unsuspecting masses to fly hipHop flavored comics with anime-worthy pinache, and have yet to mention a book of MASSIVE proportions?

forgive me friends... today, i give you Jason Pearson's Body Bags. i first saw J.Pearson's work on covers (i bought Catalyst: Agents of Change primarily for his next-level cover art...), and was blown away by his impeccable sense of movement, flash and incredibly polished anime-ish style. in a field of Graph and Anime inspired artists of the mid-nineties (and there were A. LOT of 'em), Pearson's work stood far and away the best of the bunch.
anyways, Body Bags was part of Dark Horse's "Blanc Noir" imprint (with such notable label-mates as Brian Stelfreeze, Cully Hamner and Adam Hughes [if you don't recognize those names... i got a TON o' work ta do...]) . the house eventually folded, but not before j.p. wrote, drew and dropped the opus-worthy miniseries, Father's Day, which introduced us to Mack (aka "Clownface"), ruthless Body Bagger (high stakes bounty hunter) his elderly partner Pops, and his long-lost daughter (and wanna-be baby bagger) the bodacious Panda.

the book is PURE. F^&*^IN' GENIOUS!!! it's a violent, irreverant, blood-spraying masterpiece!!! Jason's new stompin' grounds, the aptly named 12-gauge Comics, has re-released Father's Day, so please do yourself a favor and go COP IT!!! for those too paranoid to trust me, go preview Father's Day for self.
