the MAYHEM continues Before it even STARTS...
here's the roughs Jim Lee (yeah, that Jim Lee) did for the Trade cover to Tyrese Gibson's new comic MAYHEM! no, you didn't miss anything, the first issue to the series doesn't hit stores until August 5th. so now you're probably wondering why Jim Lee is drawing the cover to the Trade collecting a series whose first issue isn't out yet. as Martin said in Bad Boys: "gettin' it outta the way..." Last month, i predicted that MAYHEM! #1 would be the highest-selling comic of the summer, due to Tyrese's multi-media marketing push, and it looks like i may be right:
according to an Image Comics press release, Tyrese's presales through LA's Meltdown Comics have exceeded single-store records not seen since the early nineties with over ten thousand units sold... most comics today would enjoy selling 10k total, and that's what MAYHEM! has moved through one store, in one city, before the book's release."The success of MAYHEM is a golden opportunity for all retailers to tap into this new influx of readers,” says Meltdown owner Gaston Dominguez. “Tyrese is a 2.0 celebrity who is a marketing workhorse and whose brand spans across movies, music, and TV... Believe me when I tell you that if Tyrese Twitters your store name you will get calls and in-store orders.” dude isn't frontin' either... i was online when Tyrese put one of the local stores in my area on blast because one of his fans told him his comicshop owner never heard of MAYHEM... the next thing you know he is asking them to STOP calling because the store is getting overwhelmed!
but if you think other creators at Image are salty at Tyrese for making them step their game up, think again. "With the current state of the comic book industry, any new infusion of excitement or customers would be a welcome relief" said Image co-founder and President Todd McFarlane. "Tyrese brings both of those to the table along with his unbridled enthusiasm." in fact, several big names are on Tyrese's bandwagon.
“To have the personal endorsements of Jim Lee, Avi Arad, Todd McFarlane, Robert Kirkman, Grant Morrison, and so many others…it just blows my mind." said Gibson in a press release. "I am excited to bring MAYHEM to the die-hard comic book fans, but I am most excited at this opportunity to expose this world to the new generation of comic book fans, who, like me until now have never read a comic book in their lives. They will find new heroes to embrace and enjoy escapism at it’s best! This is only the beginning…”watching Tyrese learn the comics biz on the fly (then turn around and share what he's learning on Twitter) is amazing. i mean, this dude learned about comics by attending Comicon to promote Transformers, now he Kingpinnin' it! from what i can tell, he's cooking up more comics properties behind the scenes with all those big-name comics vets he's rubbing elbows with... but first thing's first! Mayhem! #1 drops August 5th. tell your comic shop to order you an issue, if you haven't already...

One of the DOPEST emcees you NEVER heard passes...
My first exposure to JAX was as the hype man to MARS ILL on "Breathe Slow" off their sophomore album Backbreakanomics in 2004. the universe indeed works in mysterious ways, because i didn't know that was him until today, when i learned that he was gone. Jax died early this morning of natural causes, according to his long-time friend, emcee Craig "The Flux" Wonda.
over the last year, i've become a big fan of Jax's crew BINKIS RECS, and was impressed with the self-proclaimed "One Man Gangstarr," who made beats and wrote rhymes for his own records, as well as for his peoples in the Binkis crew. he was a first-rate lyricist, and encouraged his fans to look forward, frowning on imitation of old school artists even as he managed to embody the best of golden-era street hop sensibilities.
i especially recommend that hip hop purists (by any possible means) get their hands on Sharper Images, the only album of his extensive (for an indy rapper, anyways) catalog that i have had the pleasure of hearing, because it's dope! Fans of underground crews like Lootpack, Foreign Legion and Artifacts will enjoy the dead-serious commitment to fun-filled music on Sharper Images and Binkis Recs' The Reign Begins.our heart goes out to his close friends (which i'm sure he had many) and family. i never met him, but his continued contribution to the culture will surely be missed.

Recs In Effect!
the bar for what passes as dope rhyming has fallen pretty low... you get used to it, until you run into a crew like BINKIS Recs. Residing in the hustle-heavy town of Atlanta, the BINKIS Recs crew reminds me of groups like Jurassic 5, Dilated Peoples and Mars Ill that are throwbacks to an era when rappers stood on their spitting skills, unique voice and ability to move you, rather than gangster reputation, big booty girls and the all-ambiguous "swagger"...while the crew has mad respect for the history of dope lyricism (BINKIS stands for "Before Ignorant Niggas Killed Intelligent Songs"), they manage to pay respect to the past by pushing the art into the future.
On their debut album The Reign Begins, the emcee trio of Jax, Flux Wonda, and Killa Kalm recall crews like De La Soul and L.O.N.S. for their ability to crack knecks and backs while cracking a smile at the same time. That injection of playfulness, along with a lyrical standard that rivals early Wu-Tang, makes this one of the strongest crews i've peeped out in recent years. in addition to having star-worthy charisma as an emcee, Jax also crafts the beats for BINKIS Recs, assisted by fresh cuts from DJ Mafioso, creating music that's particularly brilliant on songs like the title track The Reign Begins (which sports a vocal sample/hook that borders on hypnotic) and 2 Much. likewise, that dude Flux Wonda shows why he was nominated for Emcee of the Year in the ghettoManga Awards last year, and Killa Kalm grows on me more with each verse.
yeah... i've been added to the growing legion of BINKIS Recs fans. there's a TON of material available from this rediculously talented crew, so please do yourself a favor: raise the bar hip hop in general by getting down with 'em! for starters, i give The Reign Begins my highest recommendation, a place on the BegBorrowSteal list! COP IT!

modern-day genius Craig "Flux" Wonda received two ghettoManga Award nominations in 2007, for his Emceeing and Illustration skills... it's only a testament to the winners that he didn't take one of 'em home, because as these Paintings show, he has abundant skills! and his microphone mastery is just as magnificent, playa!
