#SheGoHard- AFUA RICHARDSON talks GENIUS, BLACK PANTHER, and The Space for Women in Comics

Y'all know all of us here at GhettoManga love the mighty multi-talented artist, musician, and cos-player Afua Richardson, so watching this interview on TVONE's SISTER CIRCLE just gave me an excuse to drop some photos from the Afuniverse...

Police Brutality. Peaceful Protest ignored. Gang Truce. it's not CNN, it's the new GENIUS TPB from @TopCow!

When Top Cow dropped this inventive action thriller written by Marc Bernardin & Adam Freeman and Illustrated by Afua Richardson last summer, they couldn't have known how much police brutality, urban protests movements, gang truces, and violent uprisings would dominate the media for the next year. But even if it's coincidental, that doesn't make GENIUS any less timely now that the trade paperback is in stores.

 I saw this cover to The Tithe #2 on the stands when I wandered into my comic shop late Wednesday evening, and after being welcomed by the familiar quote from the Old Testament book of Malachi (the one about giving offerings), I couldn't resist its charms.  On one side of The Tithe we follow the Samaritans, a band of tech-savvy crusaders who rob Mega-churches of the loot they fleece from their followers. On the other, FBI agent Dwayne Campbell (above) and his task force are trying to catch them.

 I never read Larime Taylor's serial killer soap opera A Voice in the Dark before today, but this cover to A Voice in the Dark: Get Your Gun #1 caught my eye, and the sales pitch said it was a good jumping on point for new readers. So I jumped on. Did I mention the whole first issue was posted online by the publisher, Top Cow? Yeah... free comics...

If you're not reading GENIUS, you are officially snoozing. It might just be a cat nap, though: Top Cow is releasing issues 1-5 weekly. so it's easy to get took unawares. But don't fret, just wipe that gunk outta your eyes and peep this preview of GENIUS #3...

I haven't heard any word of Top Cow's inner city action thriller GENIUS being optioned for movies, cable or streaming teevee, but it's set in South Central Los Angeles, so we'll see. Anyways, check out this preview of GENIUS #2...

I totally missed it- "GENIUS" by Afua Richardson

I first came across Afua Richardson years ago on the Artxilla message boards back when that was my primary method of scouting talent and sharing my own work. She was going by the name Lakota Sioux back then, and her work was pretty good. I went through period where I was spending less time socializing with artists and more time prospecting for clients (with mixed results), and she was one of the people who I just lost track of.  In that time, Afua's work REALLY took off, including doing the art on Genius for Top Cow's Pilot Season, which eventually spawned a mini-series. Here's the Pilot issue of Genius, in it's entirety.

Kirkman + Stelfreeze + Silvestri = HELLS YEAH!

HOLY CRAP! This is freakin' HARDBODY*!!! And I would say that even if it WASN'T written by Robert Kirkman and drawn by Brian Stelfreeze (but it is, and that makes it even more so!). The Silvestri cover doesn't suck either...
