My wife is very good at buying good Father's Day gifts. This Father's Day, she surprised me with a copy of Tom Reiss's NY Times Bestseller The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo, which I have wanted BAD since I first heard about it on NPR last fall.
If that subtitle sounds like puffery, you need to know that this book is about General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, the son of a black slave (from the colony which became modern day Haiti) and a French nobleman. This black superman became a hero of the French Revolution and a thorn in the side of some guy named Napoleon. Did I mention his son Alexandre Dumas went on to write The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers inspired by his dear old dad? 'Cause he totally did...
Yeah. I know what you're thinking: "Are you saying the dude that wrote The Three Musketeers was black?!?"
Yep.
So anyways, I haven't read the book yet, but I guess you can see why I wanted it. The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo, which recently won a Pulitzer Prize for Biography, is obviously in stores now, so look for it in your favorite book store or click here to order via Amazon.

Thank your wife for me, for loving you so much to buy you such a dope gift that you were generous enough to share with your fans and friends! Lol
ReplyDeleteI knew about Mr. Dumas, but not about this book! Def copping this!!
You have NO IDEA how much I wanted this book! I heard about it right after getting laid off, or I would have snapped it up instantly!
ReplyDeleteSince we never have enough money to do everything, I always put off buying things for myself, so I'm SO thankful to my ladyhalf for buying this for me!
