If you're not reading GENIUS, you are officially snoozing. It might just be a cat nap, though: Top Cow is releasing issues 1-5 weekly. so it's easy to get took unawares. But don't fret, just wipe that gunk outta your eyes and peep this preview of GENIUS #3...

MATURE READERS ONLY
GENIUS: ISSUES 1-5, WEEKLY THROUGHOUT AUGUST The Winner of Top Cow's Pilot Season makes its triumphant return to print! What if the greatest military mind of our generation was born to a people who are already supremely conditioned to wage war, who know nothing but violence since birth, and must continually adapt to new predators in order to survive? What if the second coming of Alexander the Great, of Genghis Khan, of Napoleon, of Patton...what if it was a teenaged girl from South Central, L.A. named Destiny? And what if she decides to secede three blocks of the ‘Hood from the Union? Who is going to take it back from her and her army of gangbangers? Who CAN? From writers MARC BERNARDIN and ADAM FREEMAN (Alphas, X-Men Origins: Nightcrawler, The Authority, The Highwaymen) and rising-star artist AFUA RICHARDSON comes a harrowing, action-packed tale of a city that declares war on a brilliant young woman pushed to the edge

The technical term for what you just read is "some gangster shit"...
I can only guess as to why Top Cow is putting this out so fast, but it's kinda sad, because this book needs to be talked about more than it possibly could be in five weeks! I don't get the impression that it is the first arc of an ongoing story, but I hope I'm wrong. I would hate for an awesome character like Destiny to appear, make a splash and burn out all in one month. But I just tipped my hand to how I see this playing out, didn't I? Like I said, I hope I'm wrong. Either way, this looks like a great comic.
Whatever the case, GENIUS should serve as a great coming out party for the mighty +Afua Richardson, who's been slugging it out in the trenches, doing great work for most of the big publishers, but who is still relatively unknown. Afua approaches drawing comics with as much humility, intellectual curiosity, and work ethic as talent. She has the aptitude and attitude to be great, and I have enjoyed watching her grow in the art and craft of making comics. The five issues of GENIUS that are coming out this month will really show fans how Afua challenges herself as an artist and grows because of it.
So if you wanna get a closer look, put hands on GENIUS #3, which came out in stores today!

Peace,

Samax Amen draws people, places and things for fun and profit. He is the artist of many great comics you never heard of like Herman Heed, Champion of Children, The Brother and The World As You Know It. He even writes and draws his own comics, like Dare: The Adventures of Darius Davidson, Spontaneous, and Manchild when he gets around to it. Because making comics is hard and stuff, he started GhettoManga as a blog in 2006 and as a print magazine in 2008.
