OK, go get a copy DC Nation #0 now. Like, RIGHT NOW.

Over the eons, many, companies have tried to offer very cheap to free “special” issues to entice new readers. More often than not, these aren’t stellar books. The thing that sets the 25 cent DC Nation #0 apart, is that it might be one of the best books DC has produced this year.

Three stories, all of them cool, all of them setting up major plot points for big events coming to the DC Universe. This book is great. And it lets you know it from the first page.

Story one is by Batman writer Tom King and rising star Clay Mann. It’s about what the Joker does when he learns about Batman and Catwoman’s upcoming nuptials. Clay Mann’s artwork is beautiful. You can see why he’s been getting so many key assignments lately.

About halfway through this story, I realized I was genuinely creeped out by it. As it should be.

Story two is our next peek at what Brian Michael Bendis has to offer for Superman. It is drawn by Legend of Legends Jose Garcia Lopez. If you don’t know who he is, let’s just say he drew the lunch box you carried around as a snot nosed eight year old.

Right off the jump, Bendis gives us a hint to one of his core philosophies for the character. We enter on a meeting of Daily Planet staff called by Chief Perry White, who is admonishing his staff for all the sensationalistic scare stories he’s been seeing on his desk recently. “I’m done selling fear to keep the lights on”.

Bendis has promised that we’ll get to meet some new key characters on the Planet’s staff and we get our first here, Robinson Goode.

Story three is written by Scott Snyder (Court of Owls, Metal) and drawn by Jorge Jimenez, my vote for best new artist in ALL of mainstream comics. Fight me. Jorge’s work is beautiful. And he somehow always has the best post production in the game.

The writing is madness. As of Metal, it seems Snyder has found new life in the ridiculous. Ridiculous can work if it’s executed with style and you stick the landing (see Thor Ragnarok), and Snyder is obviously willing to take the risk.

Exhibit A:

BATMAN:
SUPERMAN, TEAM ENTROPY IS NEARING THE CELLBLOCK! WHATS THE STATUS ON TEAM MYSTERY?

SUPERMAN:
WELL, I’M ABOUT TO THROW A DESPOTIC STARFISH AT A GIANT FLOATING BRAIN... SO I GUESS WE’RE DOING SWELL.

Yeah, it’s like that. But Jorge has the chops, so it comes off as fun. You’re left thinking, I can’t even imagine what they’ll be doing next. This team, along with a few other co-conspirators takes over the entire Justice League line of titles in the coming months.

The future of the DCU is bright and getting this book into lots of fans hands at a very cheap price is a very smart move. Run, don’t walk. And buy a copy for someone else. You have a quarter, and comics will save the world.
