Surviving Mother's Day

I want to acknowledge that you might be one of the people who may be hurting today.  Mother's Day is hard for people who grew up without a mother, had a tough relationship with her, or had their mother pass away.  If that's you, fam, I just want to say my heart goes out to you, and I don't want to be insensitive to your pain.

My relationship with my mom has been strained at times, and I have spent a lot of time away from her.  There were a few years that we were not really on speaking terms.  It doesn't really matter whose fault it was, sense there is plenty of blame to go around.  What matters is I tried to start a family of my own from the broken relationship with my mom.  Once I became a divorced and struggling father, I am a lot more gracious with my mom and with myself.

These days, we spend a lot of time together, and I am really enjoying it.  As she gets older, I am more aware of how valuable each day is.  I know many people who have lost their moms, and as I enjoy my mom, faults and all, I cannot forget the pain they must be feeling.

If you are among those who is without your mother today, know that you are most likely in the thoughts of those that know you.  Give a friend a call tonight before bed, and talk about your pain.  I bet they will help you feel better, at least for today.
