The Baddest Chick of All Time turns 69 today

“I had to bump heads with many men in the industry. They were not comfortable with showing a progressive black female in an action role. As a strong woman, I was seen as a threat. I thought, ‘We don’t need to walk behind you, we should walk beside you.’” -the mighty Pam Grier

As a black man, comics fan, artist, and writer, it is difficult to communicate the importance of Pam Grier.  Grier is an icon of female power, black girl magic, and every other thing a growing boy needed to love black women in a world that tried to act like they didn't know.  My mom had the Foxy Brown poster, and the Coffy tee shirt, and the Pam Grier movie marathon attitude that taught me how to navigate through a world that was harsh to you if you identified as weak.

Along with a ton of other artists, I have been frustrated with my inability to reproduce on paper the mystique that Grier brings to the screen.  But it has been fun trying!

Anyways, if you are reading this, Pam, everyone here at GhettoManga continues to be in awe of your strength and beauty.

Have a great day!

He is the artist of many great comics you never heard of like Herman Heed, Champion of Children, The Brother and The World As You Know It. He even writes and draws his own comics, like Dare: The Adventures of Darius Davidson, Spontaneous, and Manchild when he gets around to it. Because making comics is hard and stuff, he started GhettoManga as a blog in 2006 and as a print magazine in 2008.
