It almost seems unfair to single anyone out.
But at the risk of being out of order, let's take a minute to appreciate the life and contribution of the late, great Bill Withers.
The pitch:
Bill Withers - Live (1972) Lonely Town, Lonely Street Ain't No Sunshine Use Me Let Me In Your Life Kissin' My Love Lean On Me Harlem
Withers was not an artist whose name rang a bell with me, but his music was indelibly embedded in the soundtrack of my youth.
The first song of Withers' that I think of is Lean on Me, a song that served as the title track of one of my favorite movies. Just a solid, solid song. But a casual youtube search will show that he is all up and through my musical tastes. His songs have been sampled and remade in multiple genres, and inspired artists in multiple mediums.
Just the seven songs he performs in Bill Withers Live (1972) would be enough to earn him a place of respect in my heart. I am so grateful for his contribution to the culture, and to the score of my personal story.
rest in peace and power.
