Wherever Evil Exists...

Mum-Ra Lives by Samax.
for all my Thundercats fans out there, here's a piece i did as a warm-up today, featuring everyone's favorite decrepit Egyptian wizard, Mum-Ra the Ever-Living. I always liked the crusty old wizard Mum-Ra over the roided-up muscley monster Mum-Ra, but that's just me. for those who never saw Thundercats, Mum-Ra is an ancient wizard, essentially the most powerful bad guy on Third Earth, who comes out of his sarcophagus on occasion to make trouble for the good guys. when his normal spell-casting powers and deep legion of minions are insufficient, Mum-Ra can call upon the "ancient spirits of Evil" to transform him into a gigantic, musclebound demon-god capable of leaving the safety of his pyramid stronghold, casting even more powerful spells and putting speed-knots on cats if the need arises. unfortunately, upon seeing his reflection, he returns to his scrawny wizard form and must retreat to his casket to revitalize himself.
here's a brief youTube vid of Mum-Ra's transformation below. enjoy!

Man In Black

Snake Eyes final art by ~MisterHardtimes . i haven't seen the new GI JOE flick yet, even though many of my friends said i should. i can honestly say, I'm just not interested. however, lest that be taken as a slight against the coolest character in the JOEniverse, i posted a picture of my #1 man in black (with due respect to Will Smith and Johnny Cash) Snake Eyes drawn by that dude Mike Hawthorne (Hysteria, GI JOE:ORIGINS). while i admit that my original queeziness about the film is probably misplaced, i loved the Warren Ellis penned GI JOE:RESOLUTE cartoon on Adult Swim, and watching it absorbed all the enthusiasm i had for seeing the Real American Heroes on screen... now if someone will convince America to start releasing animated features like that on the big screen in the states... THAT'D be worth the trip to the theater!

"if you're lookin' for a Brooklyn Jam

Yalad is a true hip hop lyricist, pouring his gravely verses over beats that are suitable for block-crawling and head-knodding alike. if you're anything like me, this joint will make you frown... in a good way! if you like it, peep Yalad's mySpace for more of that raw.

Certified DOPE hip hop!

while i was in deep ellum last night, I ran into Patrick Favors (left), the drummer for Dem Southernfolkz, an eclectic hip hop soul group playing a show at Liquid Lounge. man, these cats are ridiculous! this video for "The Message" (which features Skinny Deville from Nappy Roots) was shot in Art Park, the same place where I was hard at work repainting one of the statues. i'm not finished with my piece yet, but i'll post pics when it's done... anyways, it's funny i ran into dude while working on my piece. he was really proud of this group's music and when he let me hear some of it on his i-phone, i understood why. isht was bangin' for real, so when i got home i had to peep it...

Week In Review

so this week has been pretty eventful... i had a photoshoot with Dallas free newspaper The Quick for an interview they will be running about me (next week, i think), and being the silly sonuvagun i am, i scheduled it to be at my local comic shop, so i could pick up the first issue of Brandon Graham's gonzo urban fantasy King City and indulge in the ego-stroking exercise of the photoshoot all in one shot! to get the full ghettoManga experience, you should buy the issue, then download Brandon's free Inkstuds Mixtape (featuring classic joints from Rakim, KRS ONE, and Jadakiss) for background listenin' while you read... sweet! i find it hard to see how anyone could pass up on a massive comic for 2.99 if you ALSO throw in a free mixtape with it!
i also grabbed my copy of Wet Moon Volume 5: Where All Stars Fail to Burn which included the additional boost of finding out that Ross included my drawing of his character Unknown in the Fan Art section! this was my first time having my art published by one of the major indy publishers (for the record, Oni Press), so for me it's kind of a big deal! plus, i'm not sure if i expected my piece to be chosen... anyways, the book is great. i'm still crunk from this week's take. i copped two books by comics do-it-alls i really like, and looked good doing it! there's more news that i will get to later, but that's all for right now...

LeSean Bounces

master cartoonist LeSean Thomas is leaving the U.S. for a job at JM Animation in Korea on September 3rd. JM is responsible for animation on shows like Avatar: The Last Air Bender, Wonderful Days, Fist of the North Star, Noein, Macross Zero, Hellsing, Count of Monte Cristo, and is currently producing Season 3 of The Boondocks.

"It really is a dream come true to finally make it overseas and work alongside some of the production crews of animes I’ve come to love over the years," said LeSean, a brother we at ghettoManga look to as a constant source of inspiration for his own work on shows like The Boondocks, Blokhedz, Ben Ten:Alien Force, and his comics and art projects. While it is not uncommon for foreign artists to work overseas in Korean animation studios because they are usually attached to an existing project from said country, this situation is unique because LeS is the first American to be plucked from the states to be hired specifically to work in-house at a Korean animation studio. "It’s exciting, but at the same time also a lot of pressure. However I’m confident that I will do my best... Hopefully I wont be the last..."
