For me, Lance Tooks' name has been synonymous with underground comics since I was in my twenties. Right up there with Harvey Pekar or R. Crumb.
When I was secretly drawing comics that I showed to very few people, one of my friends slid me a copy of Danger Funnies that blew my young mind.
Lance Tooks was one of the very, very first independent black comic book artists I ever heard of.
He is the kind of artist whose work goes against the grain thematically and visually.
Tooks doesn't seem to give a gotdamn about the "rules". When my college professors tried to tell me comics weren't art, Tooks' work was in my arsenal to shut them up.
When I started publishing, and I was included in the Black Comix anthology WITH cats like Lance Tooks, I was over the moon!
