Brandon Graham Talks RAIN LIKE HAMMERS

I just recently started reading Brandon Graham's graphic novel RAIN LIKE HAMMERS*, so I couldn't resist watching this interview.

I am slowly-but-surely making my way through RAIN LIKE HAMMERS.  

My perception so far is that this work is way more melancholy than the work he was doing when I first discovered him.  So it makes sense to hear him talk about battling depression while making it.

Still, RAIN LIKE HAMMERS still exposes the playful reverence for the medium that we loved from early Multiple Warheads and King City pages.  The playfulness doesn't feel as whimsical as those books were, but he still has the punch and wordplay that does my old rap nerd's heart good.

I am not far enough into the reading of RAIN LIKE HAMMERS to know what that title means, but the heaviness of mood sometimes feels to beat down from above.  Even if that is part of it, Brandon loves multiple entendre, so I'm sure more literal and figurative meanings will reveal themselves.

The interview has some spoilers in it, but I feel like they do their best to avoid revealing the payoff(s) too much.  But with Brandon's work I have found the joy to be in the journey, not the destination.
