i've been a fan of mars ILL for so long, it doesn't even seem right that all my people aren't gonzo for them... this joint is from the latest record, Pro Pain... this track is especially fresh 'cause that dude Ahmad (yeah, THAT Ahmad) comes in with a little of that Wes' Coast to make the cypher complete.

The Bionic Woman is here!!!

heeeere we go... amputee Claudia Mitchell has stepped into the world of our imagination. She is the first woman (joining Jesse Sullivan) to recieve a fully functioning bionic arm. it's still a little crude and misshapen, BUT it responds to her nerve impulses, not just muscle flexion, so the arm is a huge step to a world more like the one in comics and cartoons.

"I can flex my elbow and open and close my hand with the mere thought of doing it," she said. cool, huh?

just thought this was interesting...

Ross Campbell Interview

just read a great in-depth interview with Ross Campbell, creator of The Abandoned and Wet Moon. in the interview, he gets into his relationship with Wetmoon publisher Oni Press, as well as Abandoned publisher Tokyopop. he explains how he manages to draw such varied (and variously hot) female characters, his preferences of media, possible future projects, and his love of the South.

check out the interview, his website, or (if you're really smart) both.

ah the eighties... despite, crack, reaganomics, and that "rap crap", the eighties also brought us the end of that pesky racism problem! don't believe me? well, how else do you explain the Bionic Six? i mean, how else does one explain a multi-racial family of cyberneticly powered superheroes? do YOU have a better explanation?

didn't think so. i mean, SOME people might see a few stereotypical depictions in the first episode, but those people are just jaded and evil...

Knowledge Reigns Supreme...

no matter who you are, or where you come from, if you love hipHop, you need to give props to the blastmaster KRS One... relax, fam... i'm not one of these quivering hip hop acolytes that worships KRS and considers everything he says a holy proclamation. i just dig the pure heart he comes with, and the fact that he doesn't care if people hate him or love him: whether it's saying that multiplatinum rappers are not sellouts because "at least a sellout has an agenda" or questioning the motives of righteous humility, KRS frames everything through the eyes of an old soul who found himself just in time for hip hop's entry onto the world's grand stage.

in an interview that's gotta be seen to be believed, KRS breaks down his personal history with hipHop, as well as outlining where it's going. my boy Khalid posted the interview on blogSteelo, so by all means, take a minute to check it out and comment here, or on khalid's blog...

the Healing...

in case you're new around here, i've been crowing about this group from waco, tx called The Strange Fruit Project for some time now. part Blackstar, part Outcast, and very, very Texas, this southern fried soul-clappin' rap crew is poised to be the next big thing (or maybe the next medium thing... this is INDIE hipHop after all...). they have the lyrics, the steez, and the best producer this side of 9th Wonder (i think s-1's better than 9th Wonder, but that's just me...). with the recent release of their third record The Healing, it looks like some pretty important people are starting to share my enthusiasm:

"Most of my iPod is just a random 9000 song trip and occasionally I have to walk up to it/pull it out of pocket and see who it is. The artist I did that the most to was Strange Fruit Project..."
-Ahmir ?uestLove Thompson of The Roots

the hard-working/hard-touring Trio of s-1, myth and myone ("my own") are kicking out some imaginative, sexy, soulful music... and these days they're getting a little help from their friends. s1's excellent beats recieve support from Jake One, illMind, nicolay, Vitamin D, and the aforementioned 9th Wonder. on the mic they get love from Thesis, Darrien Brockington, Little Brother, and the REAL Queen of Texas hipHop, Erykah muthaF%^$in' Badu (reckanize!)
anyways, props to my girl Syma, who hipped me to the SFP myspace profile. go peep some fresh music, pictures, videos, an' alladat... or just cop some music! all three platters (From Devine, Soul Travellin', The Healing) get the thumbs up from ya boy, so you can't go wrong fam!

Mos Def Arrested

according to SoHH, the mighty Mos Def was arrested thursday night in New York. his crime? trying to give heads a free rap show: Mos pulled up outside the MTV Video Music Awards in a flat-bed truck around 10 pm and gave an impromptu show to the audience gathered there.

The Brooklyn bred rapper reportedly performed his song "Katrina Clap," which attacks President George W. Bush's administration's slow response to Hurricane Katrina, before NYPD officers told him and his entourage to pull the plug and began making arrests.

Mos Def's publicist Carleen Donovan had this to say: "Mos Def was not out to break any laws. His only goal was to heighten the awareness of a serious situation that still exists in our country," Donovan explained via a statement. "He does not want people to forget that although its one year later, the people and cities hit by the hurricane still need the help of the American people."

this goes under the category of "don't New York cops have anything better to do..?" apparently not... again, you can peep the article in its entirety on Sohh...

the Dark Knight Returns...

no other comic book character has had such disparate onscreen treatment as the Batman. the Adam West paunch. Clooney's smirking credit card commercial. Tim Burton's dark visions that lead to my favorite cartoon adaptation ever... whatever the feeling regarding previous incarnations, it seems director Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins recieved more or less universal praise in the super-picky comicbook fanboy community.

in a recent interview, Nolan shed some light on The Dark Knight, the much-anticipated sequal to Batman Begins. "The title has been chose very specifically. It's quite important to the film", Nolan teases when asked about the film , which he crypticly suggests is about how "things have to get worse before they get better..."

all our suspicions are confirmed by Nolan's pick for the villain: the Joker. the question is, what's his inspiration for the much-interpreted killing machine? "I would certainly point to The Killing Joke but I also would point very much to the first two appearances of the Joker in the comic. If you look at where the Joker comes from there's a very clear direction that fits what we're doing very well".
hmm... okay, let's quarterback this thing: in his first appearances, the joker was a mass killer and master thief, who left smiling corpses as his calling card; likewise, Alan Moore's The Killing Joke starred a Joker that drove commissioner gordon insane by shooting Batgirl/barbara gordon through the spine, leaving her in a wheelchair for life... so it looks like the film will feature a Joker we can all agree on.

that's it for now. when i know more, so will you!

the Villain is in th Buildin'

what else can i say? there's a new Madvillain record in the pipe. for those who don't know, Madvillain is the firestorm-like amalgamation of indie all-star emcee/beatmakers MF DOOM (Monster Island, MM Food, Vaudeville Villain) and Madlib (Quasimoto The Unseen). anybody who spent any time with me last year knows i became obsessed with DOOM as a result of his collabo with Dangermouse (as the appropriately titled Dangerdoom, on last year's ghettoManga Album of the Year: The Mouse and The Mask, of Gnarls Barkley fame. now's my (and your) chance to catch lightning in the bottle again, cousin!

todays sign of the HipHop apocolypse...

my man Corance posted this on mySpace... i figured i'd share it with ya'll (shaking my head in disbelief...)

I don't know how wide spread this is, but:I was walking through Big T [one of the Dallas Swap-meet style boot-leg-o-ramas...]the other day and saw some of the stores were selling bullet proof vests. I guess this is so you can be like Fiddy. However, on closer inspection, I noticed the vest had a warning label: "This garment does not guard against gunfire."

Uh-huh. A fake-ass vest. I'm waiting for someone to be strolling through the hood rockin' a vest with a warning label on it. So if someone rolls up and puts two in your vest, that mess will go right through; all 5 layers of rayon!

now that's ignorant!

Afro Samurai Trailer...

in case ya'll were wondering, i had a blast at the SanDiego Comicon, and will be scramblin' to post on all the cool junk i saw, heard about, and/or picked up. that said, i spent an excessive amount'a time standing in line waiting for stuff. Case in Point: i stood in line probably an hour (and they kept marching us around, which really got on my nerves!) waiting to see the trailer for Afro Samurai... AND IT WAS WORTH EVERY MINUTE!!!
in addition to the show's creator, producers, teevee execs (no, afro samurai voice actor, star of the live action adaptation, and executive producer Sam L Jackson was not there... he was in another part of the convention promoting Snakes On A Plane... nah for real!), i got to meet the cat who's composing the score and putting together the soundtrack: The Rza (wu-tang, bobby digital, ring any bells? no? what are you doing here?)!

anyways peep the trailer. then pick up your tounge and wait feverishly with the rest of us... it debuts this winter on SpikeTV, with DVD release scheduled for spring 2007...
incidentally... RZA hinted that he had some interesting plans in mind for the soundtrack... including an appearance by Big Daddy Kane (if you are too young to know who that is, just nod in agreement, and ask your big brother later...)!!!

NYC Mech- Beta Love

i ran into my man Miles Gunther (who, 'longside his buddy Ivan Brandon, writes NYC Mech for Image Comics) today, intent on catching up with him, and finding out what he's up to... he gave me the issues i was missing from the NYC Mech mini, Beta Love drawn by the phenominal Andy Macdonald, with covers by Eric Canete (cover to #1 seen here). and lemme say, this mess is the BOMB (i just got to the end of #4 of 6, and i'm savoring it, cousin)!

i readily admit it: NYC mech is one of those books that i was intimidated by at first... it's deep: according to miles, the book is "not science fiction", but it takes place in a new york city that is full of robots, for no apparent reason at all... it's sort of a crime book (closest thing i can think of is lapham's Stray Bullets), with a huge cast of characters, all of whom live (and many of whom DIE) in... (wait for it) New York City. it's gritty, funny, and chock full o' robots! i imagine the use of robots for people is an allegory or metaphor of some sort (actually the root for the word robot means "SLAVE")... but hey! don't crush your brain, cousin! just get into the raw dialogue and finely dressed robots doing bad things!
In Beta Love, the decidedly dangerous street diva- Nika- is back, gettin' her Love on with the unwitting sweethearted bus driver, Quentin. He seems a normal enough cat, but falling for Nika threatens to drag him into her life of raw-dogged, wild-out criminal activities... the book's hot! Ivan and Miles are writing this twisted love story so well, shifting from danger to tenderness to foreshadows of impending doom so quickly and frequently it'll snap that neck, son!

the art, by Andy Macdonald takes full advantage of the visual interest you can create using robots for anything from a seemingly pointless interlude (like the one seen here), to a love scene (yeah, i said robot love scene!). whenever i feel like i'm used to the level of craftsmanship and skill in andy's work, i turn a page and he surprises me with his power over the page!
there are currently two NYC Mech collections available, but Miles said he wasn't sure if Beta Love would be collected. you should definitely get your hands on this story, though... holler at'chour comic shop to track down the individual issues (and get the nifty guest pin-ups with 'em!) so you won't have to wait!

i'll make an honest effort to get at Miles and sit down and interview 'im about his new zombie/samurai story (nope. not kidding) project and other news, until then slide over to the NYC mech message board and geek out...

Abandonment Issues..?

cover to The Abandoned by Ross Campbell. published by and c. 2006 TokyoPop. Holla!
During yesterday's listless loitering session at Barnes+Noble, i was mildly annoyed that i couldn't find what i wanted to read, so i wandered into the manga section where i saw the cover of The Abandoned by Ross Campbell. the cover blurb let me know what i was in for, and to sum it up: lesbians, teen angst, zombies... the usual. but the protaganista was black, so i figured what the heck, right?

well guess what: this book was freakin' awesome!!! if you are a fan of suspense, zombies, or really well-drawn full figured girls and/or innards, YOU NEED TO READ THIS! Ross has a great understanding of small town teenagers, their emotions, their fears, and exactly how they would respond to a "zombie invasion"
the star Rylie and her friends are so naturally depicted that when the carnage began, i was a little disappointed... until it became clear the great characterization would continue! as they scramble to escape flesh-eating townies, scrounge for clean food and water, and discuss effective ways to smash in each other's skulls in case they turn, the cast keeps the great dialogue comin'... PLUS Campbell draws everybody immaculately from cover to cover.
i won't say anymore 'cause i want you to get as much from it as i did, if you are smart enough to find and read this great book based on my recommendation...

rumors of the rise of archvillain Venom are no longer rumors, and we catch a glimpse of the Sandman (not that old dude at the Apollo...) and a new GreenGoblin/Hobgoblin... and it looks like Pete's puttin' the mack on Gwen Stacy, too (even money she won't make it out of this film alive)...

Superman Returns

superman returns was not the best superhero movie i ever saw. just wanted to get that outta the way... i had lots and lots of drama going on yesterday. amid all of it, i ALMOST forgot to spend my last few bucks on that midnight showing of Superman Returns (no, i didn't wait the extra hour to watch the IMAX version...). almost, but not quite!
it wasn't bad. for once (X-men and X2 director) Bryan Singer made a movie that wasn't in the top 5 superhero movies ever made, but to his credit, it IS better than x3, directed by his buddy Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, Red Dragon), making it the best comics adaptation of the summer! spiderman 3 comes out next year, and V for Vendetta came out in the spring, so he's off the hook there!
designed as a sequal to the 26 year old classic Superman II (you remember: "you will kneel, son of Jor-El"), i found Superman Returns a bit too derivative. there wasn't much attempt to make the new Supes, rookie actor Brandon Routh, distinguish himself from his predecessor (he often comes off as though doing an imitation of the late Christopher Reeves' Clark Kent), his Superman was good though, as i felt he nailed the good-yet-tough-guy persona that Reeves underplayed. Likewise, Kate Bosworth's Lois Lane was okay, but unimpressive (Terry Hatcher owns Lois Lane!). Don't get me wrong, they have their moments (the onscreen chemistry between Lane and Superman is date movie-worthy, and the scenes where Supes flexes his power are good), but... OH! Kevin Spacey (Usual Suspects, LA Confidential, Se7en) was great as Lex. still, go check Superman and SupermanII for the true genius of Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor. Lex's plucky galpal, Kitty Kowalski , was played brilliantly by Parker Posey (Blade Trinity), but she was strangely similar to Ms. Teschmacher ("But Lex, my mother lives in Hackensack...") from the original Superman. you'd think Lex would'a learnt his lesson...

Unlike his X-men films, this movie is a bit too long, clocking in at an overweight 154 minutes. having only seen it once, i'm not sure where the fat shoulda been trimmed from, but it does drag in places...

all that aside, there were lots of great, great character moments and surprising, ballsy moves by Singer and crew to give the Superman storyline narrative thrust... enough for me to recommend the film to superhero fans, or fans of the first two films.

i found a wide variety of reviews to Superman Returns, reflecting the differences in what people came in looking for. the Original superhero, Superman's continuing relevance as a character is constantly being challenged, so it's no surprise that the movie is getting a mixed responses. Still, i thought it was pretty good, just not quite Super! check it out, and let me know what you think...
