indie-rap supervillain MF DOOM has embarked on his most diabolical scheme yet... according to URB Magazine, Metal Face has sent out masked impostors to his shows, who perform anorexic 20-minute lip-sync sets and flee into the night with your money and leaving angry fans and promoters in their wake.
khalid put me on to this promotional site for Colt45, with "create your own" comics with art by Jim Mahfood. i'm gonna do this as an online gag strip. it may even be funny every once in a while... i had fun doing it anyways... if you do some, email 'em to me and i'll post em here! we'll keep it going till i get tired of it, or get sued!
i guess some people just want to get their ass kicked... i mean, i respect free speech and all that... but think about what you're doing homey! this dude Apollo Braun caught a beat down in NYC over tee-shirts saying "OBAMA IS MY SLAVE," but he wasn't the first. see Braun sells the shirts at a boutique, and one of his customers threatened to sue him after she was assaulted while wearing one'a his shirts... At the time, Braun defended the shirts, saying that they reflect the views of "ordinary WASPs [white anglo-saxon protestants]."

after entering a hospital with pneumonia, superstar actor/comedian Bernie Mac (Ocean's Eleven, Transformers, Bad Santa, The Original Kings Of Comedy, The Bernie Mac Show) died this morning in a Chicago area Hospital at age 50.

so for those who don't know me personally, i work at a call center (because freelance art is a wee bit unstable) four nights a week, on the graveyard shift. since i got married last year, i live pretty far away from work, requiring a 45 minute commute. well, on the way home this morning, i fell asleep at the wheel and woke up with a face full of federally-required airbag, surrounded by the twisted metal, glass and plastic that usedta be my Neon. i pulled myself out of the smashed up window, and walked out of the cloud of dust to see an off-duty fireman who had stopped to help me. the shock on his face looking at my car made me feel like i had to calm him down...

so here's our first look at the new Black Panther toon BET has cookin'... you may remember i told ya'll Marvel had inked a deal to turn the first black superhero into the star of a primetime animated show on BET in 2009. Reginald Hudlin (who currently writes the Black Panther comic book for Marvel) is supervising for BET, and obviously they have chosen to stick close to the visual steelo of John Romita Jr, who penciled the initial story arc of the comic relaunch for Hudlin.

If you remember this, then you're already familiar with the work of NYC-based illustrator Christian Cortes, whose work first reached me based on his ceedee designs for Jeru and other hip hop artists, but his art game is more expansive than that! he started out, like a lotta hip hop visual art cats, tagging. he's expanded into the magazine illustrating, fashion, galleries, and of course ceedee packaging.

legendary film star Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon, Witness, The Color Purple) is having a bit of trouble. see, he wants to direct a movie telling the true story of Francois Toussaint-Louverture, the slave who rose to become one of the fathers of Haiti's independence from France in 1804, making it the first black nation to throw off imperial rule and become a republic... but he's been getting the same question from all the producers:
Glover said he needs a paltry $30 million to make the film, and wasn't having much luck "I couldn't get the money (in France), I couldn't get the money in Britain. I went to everybody. You wouldn't believe the number of producers based in Europe, and in the States, that I went to," he said. so far, Glover has about $18 mil. and where did he get it from, you ask? a cultural body set up in 2006 by his friend, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez (you know, the guy who called President Bush the devil from the floor of the U.N.) to counter what he termed "the Hollywood film dictatorship".

on a whim, i recently copped Trap Dancing: The Aym Geronimo Collection Trade Paperback by J. Morgan Neal and Todd Fox. it's a fabulous pulp-inspired adventure comic starring the super-smart scientist/explorer/adventurer Aym Geronimo and her team of "Postmodern Pioneers" as they travel the globe kicking ass and taking names... in the interest of science, of course!
Trap Dancing finds a way to include romance, science, fisticuffs, spirituality and gun-clapping all in one book, so of course it gets the thumbs up... plus, it turns the tables on Indiana Jones, Johnny Quest an'em by putting the Indian chick in charge for once! Aym is an assimilated Apache, unlike her brother Wind, who holds onto his culture with an iron grip that speaks volumes. the book has a great multicultural cast of heroes and villains, and manages to give each character space to breathe, but the distinguished Ms. Geronimo is definitely the star: she's brilliant and able-bodied, never getting upstaged by the other characters. if you're anything like me, and you enjoy seeing women run the show from time to time, peep some previews from Trap Dancing on their comicspace, and cop the trade here.
Brotherman:Dictator of Discipline has sold over 750K books independently since its release in 1990, and is sited as a major influence among black comics creators (including me). series creator Dawud Anyabwile posted this picture on his blog entitled "Hancock/Brotherman - Mysteriously look alike?" implying that the character design for Hancock was ripped off from his Brotherman design.
