RIP David Carradine
Actor David Carradine(Kung Fu, Kill Bill) was found dead in the Thai capital, Bangkok. A news report said he was found hanged in his hotel room and was believed to have committed suicide. whatever the case, we tip our hats to the iconic actor, and pray for his friends and family. he'll most definitely be missed.uno.

yeah, i know a lot of you haven't been listening to my suggestions that PROOF is one of the best comics out there (although enough were wise enough to vote it the ghettoManga Comic of the Year in 2008), but Sam L Jackson obviously reads my blog and agrees with me! i mean, why else would he be campaigning to voice John Prufrock on the small and/or big screen? according to Comics2Film.com, that's just what he's doing homey! so what can you do? go back and read my previous blogs, read previews, etc. by the time something materializes, you'll be able to say you knew the deal all along!holla!

it didn't seem possible...
for those who didn't know, i finished my largest freelance assignment to date a couple weeks ago. it wound up being an 85 page long graphic novel with full color art and letters by me. i was very pleased with the accomplishment, and more importantly, so was the client! after taking last week to exhale, i started on the next assignment yesterday. i'm also working on several other projects, including getting the ghettoManga magazine back on track (begining with the summer issue). thanks to everyone who helped me stay motivated, and to all the readers who support my comics and this blog!stay tuned!

even if ya'll have, I Ain't F'got about that upcoming trade paperback starring Nefertiti Jones, an ass-kickin' sista carrying on the proud tradition that her name implies. within the pages of Southside Nefertiti:The REMIX (Fist of the Southstar) we will see that dude Randolph "Pencilism" Williams return to draw the gritty street dreams of writer-creator Mike Sales. i'm not sure when it's gonna be done, but i'm more than willing to wait, if it's gonna be like the pages seen here. as my long-time readers know, i straight CUT for the perfect blend of Sales and Williams on Nefertiti. if you've never read it, peep a sample here.read my previous reviews of Southside Nefertiti here.

Please HAMNER, Don't Hurt 'Em!
maybe you guys already knew this, but Bruce Willis (Die Hard) and Richard Donner (Lethal Weapon, Superman) are both rumored to be attached to the film adaptation of Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner's transcendantly DOPE spook nightmare RED. i can TOTALLY see Bruce Willis as the retired CIA monster who the newly appointed government bureaucrats should have known better than to mess with.anyways, according to Hamner's blog, a new TPB collecting the phenomenal miniseries has been put together and it's pretty awesome. it'll have all the dvd-style extras that the previous collection left out, and it's still only fifteen bucks. RED: THE NEW EDITION hits comic shops June 10th.

on the low, i'm working on a book called 100 Movies That Should Be Comics about movies that need to have their universes adapted in comics (instead of the other way around). well, i might hafta call it 99 Movies That Should Be Comics instead, 'cause Boom Studios has announced that it will publish a prequel to Die Hard as a comic book series titled Die Hard: Year One.
The prequel series, which drops in August, focuses on a young rookie McClane over a decade before the original Die Hard. set against the backdrop of the '76 Bicentennial Celebration, expect explosions, a high body count and a young J-mac droppin' the F bomb! this is the kind of thing that could help comics out a lot (and it wouldn't hurt the movie industry either!)...jeauh!

Required Reading...
DC Comics is bringing the Milestone Characters into their mainstream universe (i reserve judgement on that until i read some books), and to set the table, they are reprinting some of the original Milestone books in Trade Paperback format! the first horse out the gate is Dwayne McDuffie, John Paul Leon, and Robert Washington III's Static Shock: Rebirth of the Cool. i have no problem recommending Static, one of the best comics of it's time... you definitely need to cop this! Rebirth of the Cool drops today in stores everywhere.holla!

Bow to the WOW!
if you're in the mood for a romantic comedy that's heavier on the comedy than the romance, check out a hilarious comic called The Dog Years! when Trey, a twenty something toy designer, suffers a catastrophic break-up from his slightly overbearing (and more than slightly hot) fiance, his boys swoop in, determined to stop the pity-party before it even starts. once he hooks up with his boy, the crazy-as-hell dread Rasheed, you know something's about to jump off!
Writer/Artist Drayonis has created a prototype for a great cable show with a cast of characters any sitcom would be happy to have. The art is strong and he writes with a good balance of dating philosphy and comedy that's not afraid to be raunchy when appropriate. the main character's boys seem stereotypical at times, but each one finds his own voice. although the book spends a lotta time on the boys' attempts to drag Trey over to the dark side, the book offers ample coverage of the women's side of the battle of the sexes too! with all the comedy and sexual punch this book flaunts (Drayonis sure can draw some fine women... DAMN!), it also has some effective depth, which was a pleasant surprise. while we can expect to see the books printed eventually, Drayonis has 5 issues (with #6 on the way) of The Dog Years available to read free online... i suggest you do so, and feel free to let us know what you think!holla!

my boy Jamar Nicholas (Detective Boogaloo, Jamar Chronicles, Asteroid Girl) knew all about MF DOOM before i ever heard of 'im. an' even though the number one Illyphunksta's too busy working on the graphic novel adaptation to Fist Stick Knife Gun and just generally being awesome to enter the contest, he emailed me this vintage DOOM piece he drew circa '03. he said it wasn't for the MF DOOM ART CONTEST, but i entered it anyways, (like my middle school art teacher Mr. Gomez would have) 'cause i got it like that! everybody working on somethin' be advised...out!

I Am Malcolm X
i just finished reading this great biography of Malcolm X yesterday. not being a Muslim myself, i still can't see how any black person (especially a black man) can resist feeling a swell of pride at the mention of Malcolm. He remains one of the strongest examples of black masculinity ever seen in American culture, and the arc of his public persona across the length of his career is fasciniating. the way he changes his position on race based on his pilgrimage to Mecca stands as an example of how one should react when confronted with the truth.the author Andrew Helfer is elegant in his narration and adaptation of quotes for dialogue, and does a good job of letting pictures be worth their thousand words whenever possible. artist Randy DuBurke is good at capturing likenesses and like a film biographer, does a great job of portraying the emotions in scenes that were not privy to the public eye. we are reminded that Malcolm, though he was and remains a giant of history, was a living, breathing, vulnerable man like any other. his greatness comes not from super-power, but from the inner strength of his convictions. this is a great, great book.
