cover of X-Men & The ClanDestine 2, circa 1996.
these days, the best format for comics is the miniseries. minis can find an audience without pressure, and end without the embarrassment of being canceled. and if they find a good audience, you can just do another! plus, it provides creative team the freedom to only work on the book when they are motivated by a really good story idea, instead of needing to tread water with pointless filler... and minis are easily collected and packaged as Trade Paper Backs, because they have a definite beginning and end.
Many of the books i'm checking for lately are recurring limited series. the latest to show up on my radar is ClanDestine, by legendary writer/artist inker combo Alan Davis and Mark Farmer (X-men, Fantastic Four, Xcaliber). this 5 issue joint published by Marvel revolves around the lives of the Clan Destine, a family of immortals, living secretly in the marvel universe. Although the family members each possess superhuman powers, they don't necessarily feel either any heroic obligations or megalomaniacal greed... they may use their powers to benefit themselves, but mostly, they just get by. although they don't all get along, they work together to preserve the secret of their existence. unfortunately for them, the Destines being observed by a secret society known as the Guild. also, there is a premonition that one of the Destines will soon be killed, so there will be plenty of excitement. for more info on Clan Destine, go here, or just read some of their comics!
holla!
