DON'T BLINK! A new issue of GENIUS comes out this week! Art by the mighty @AfuaRichardson!

I haven't heard any word of Top Cow's inner city action thriller GENIUS being optioned for movies, cable or streaming teevee, but it's set in South Central Los Angeles, so we'll see. Anyways, check out this preview of GENIUS #2...
Here's the sales pitch:
MATURE READERS ONLY
GENIUS: ISSUES 1-5, WEEKLY THROUGHOUT AUGUST The Winner of Top Cow's Pilot Season makes its triumphant return to print! What if the greatest military mind of our generation was born to a people who are already supremely conditioned to wage war, who know nothing but violence since birth, and must continually adapt to new predators in order to survive? What if the second coming of Alexander the Great, of Genghis Khan, of Napoleon, of Patton...what if it was a teenaged girl from South Central, L.A. named Destiny? And what if she decides to secede three blocks of the ‘Hood from the Union? Who is going to take it back from her and her army of gangbangers? Who CAN? From writers MARC BERNARDIN and ADAM FREEMAN (Alphas, X-Men Origins: Nightcrawler, The Authority, The Highwaymen) and rising-star artist AFUA RICHARDSON comes a harrowing, action-packed tale of a city that declares war on a brilliant young woman pushed to the edge.

This comic had me hooked from the premise, and it's a real treat to watch the emergence of Afua Richardson. I'm sure GENIUS would still be good with another artist drawing it, but it really enhances my enjoyment knowing a woman is drawing it. Anyways, like it said in the sales pitch, GENIUS is weekly this month, presumably so Top Cow can get the paperback out faster for the tradewaiters*. For those who actually want to support the books they like, look for GENIUS #2 in stores this week.
Peace,

Samax Amen draws people, places and things for fun and profit. He is the artist of many great comics you never heard of like Herman Heed, Champion of Children, The Brother and The World As You Know It. He even writes and draws his own comics, like Dare: The Adventures of Darius Davidson, Spontaneous, and Manchild when he gets around to it. Because making comics is hard and stuff, he started GhettoManga as a blog in 2006 and as a print magazine in 2008.

As a fellow fan of Capt.Marvel/Monica/Spectrum, we both know there are actually LOTS of Black women in comics, but this lil lady is definetly worth checking out

Right. I am often beside myself listening to calls for diversity from people who refuse to support the diversity that exists. I think a lot of the fault lies with the fans, many of whom are racist and sexist. Whatever... I mostly read indies. (((airhorn)))

But yeah, Afua is a force of nature, for sure. I would love to see her climb her way up to drawing Storm, or even X-men. I think she's on that kind of trajectory.

Besides which she's also a musician, so maybe she'll win a Grammy and an Eisner in the same year at some point!
