Everybody knows I love grimy New Yorican Slaughterhouse alum Joell Ortiz, but pairing him up with a venerated veteran beatmaker like Salaam Remi for this quick 5-track EP BOX TALK is unfair...
"Most of the shit I do write's
'bout things that I ain't do right.
I glorify the shit that I regret
and that's what you like."

Most of y'all who follow my hip hop recommendations come for the conscious rap. The spiritual dudes tryin'a move the needle towards justice or whatever. Self-empowered female emcees speaking will to power.
This is not that.
This is that "Not Safe For Work" rap, that "Loud Mouth but Back It Up" rap, that "Boom Bap Pimp Slap" rap, that "Brooklyn Keep On Takin' It" rap. There is no social consciousness nor redeeming qualities in here, just some stick up kid beats and rhymes in the tradition of the old masters.
I make no apology for a love of hard-knocking hard rocks that goes back to Kool G Rap, and you shouldn't either.
But if this ain't your cup o' tea, I promise to recommend some socially conscious, forward-facing ish next time.

He is the artist of many great comics you never heard of like Herman Heed, Champion of Children, The Brother and The World As You Know It. He even writes and draws his own comics, like Dare: The Adventures of Darius Davidson, Spontaneous, and Manchild when he gets around to it. Because making comics is hard and stuff, he started GhettoManga as a blog in 2006 and as a print magazine in 2008.
