Afro Samurai Trailer...

in case ya'll were wondering, i had a blast at the SanDiego Comicon, and will be scramblin' to post on all the cool junk i saw, heard about, and/or picked up. that said, i spent an excessive amount'a time standing in line waiting for stuff. Case in Point: i stood in line probably an hour (and they kept marching us around, which really got on my nerves!) waiting to see the trailer for Afro Samurai... AND IT WAS WORTH EVERY MINUTE!!!
in addition to the show's creator, producers, teevee execs (no, afro samurai voice actor, star of the live action adaptation, and executive producer Sam L Jackson was not there... he was in another part of the convention promoting Snakes On A Plane... nah for real!), i got to meet the cat who's composing the score and putting together the soundtrack: The Rza (wu-tang, bobby digital, ring any bells? no? what are you doing here?)!

anyways peep the trailer. then pick up your tounge and wait feverishly with the rest of us... it debuts this winter on SpikeTV, with DVD release scheduled for spring 2007...
incidentally... RZA hinted that he had some interesting plans in mind for the soundtrack... including an appearance by Big Daddy Kane (if you are too young to know who that is, just nod in agreement, and ask your big brother later...)!!!

In addition to co-writing, Jackson is basically starring in the book (lending his famous visage to the anti-hero protagonist)! here's the sales pitch:
From legendary actor Samuel L. Jackson and Emmy nominated writer/producer Eric Calderon, the team that brought you the Emmy-award-winning, best-selling Afro Samurai, comes their next original series - Cold Space! When an on-the-run outlaw crash-lands on a hostile planet on the brink of civil war, he finds himself caught in the crossfire between two warring factions. But in chaos lies opportunity... because where there's war, there's money to be made! A hard-boiled sci-fi action-adventure with covers by Eisner Award-winning artist Dave Johnson and Irredeemable cover artist, Jeffrey Spokes!

Samuel L Jackson to Co-write new comic "Cold Space"

Ever since he played Mr. Glass in movies-that-should-be-comics classic Unbreakable, Sam L Jackson has made himself a fanboy go-to guy, effectively spinning the unauthorized likeness rip of Ultimates HNIC Nick Fury into a four color resume for his role as the grizzled man-of-war in the Iron Man franchise, and likely in upcoming Marvel movies like Thor, Avengers and so on. Now he's taking the next logical step...

Sam L will co-write Cold Space for BOOM! Studios with his Afro-Samurai writer and producer Eric Calderon. The book will have art by Jeremy Rock (Threshold, Robocop: Simple Machines) with covers by Dave Johnson (100 Bullets, Unknown Soldier) and Jeffrey Spokes (Irredeemable).  Of course, Jackson will also 'star' in the book, lending his familiar likeness to the book's resident space-faring tough guy...
here's the sales pitch:
From legendary actor Samuel L. Jackson and Emmy nominated writer/producer Eric Calderon, the team that brought you the Emmy-award-winning, best-selling Afro Samurai, comes their next original series — Cold Space!
32pgs, FC $3.99

going from movies to comics will seem illogical and backwards to some, but it's not. Even though comics doesn't generate the money that film does, it doesn't cost what film does either. and there's one thing that comics knows how to cultivate: Fans that will spend money on movies.  This is a good look for BOOM! as well, who have managed to get connected to several projects (NOLA, Incredibles, The Muppet Show) with movie/TV properties, talent, or both.  What do YOU think?
oh yeah, so here's a brief interview, where Jackson seems to know nothing about his role in Thor! NICE! Sam Jack is so cool that he's clean even when he's clueless!

Afro Samurai..?

i swear, i did not make this up!!!

there really is a japanese comic called Afro Samurai! like many comics creators over here(including yours truly), japanese creator Takashi Okazaki had to self-publish.

Apparently, he did a good enough job to gain attention stateside... because his manga will be made into an American cartoon, with a feature film (starring Sam L. Jackson) in the works...
for more info on this, visit his website, or go here...

Jump Around!!!

Sam L Jackson (Afro Samurai, Star Wars prequels, Shaft, Pulp Fiction) and Hayden Christensen (Star Wars prequels, Life As A House) will be starring in a new film called Jumpers next year (based on the 1992 Steven Gould sci-fi novel) about a breed of mutant teleporters ("Jumpers"... get it?) and the sect of hunters who track and kill them ("Paladins"). since the movie website is trash, i'll recommend you to this blog instead for more info on the film.

it has finally begun...

versus called me out. i have been slack on my game lately in many areas, but none so inexcusable as my neglect to speak on the broadcast debut of
Afro Samurai,
the new Animated Series starring the original Bad MuthaF^!$a: Sam L Jackson... which is not to say that i'm late to the game:

i been geekin' on this since february (don't believe me? check my previous blogs, cousin!), and i went aaaaall the way to killer cali to peep the news on it at the sanDiego comicon, where i shook hands with the muthaf!^#$n' Rza... anyways, now the mostly-lame spikeTV is airing the show, (10 o'clock thursdays where i rest... check your local listings kids...). it was my job to make sure you know about such things, and i dropped the ball like terrell owens. my bad.
but i come baring gifts, fam'ly! click the pics for a clip apiece on youTube. then start watching it on thursdays before you go to the club... if you see me out, we can talk about it, a'ight?

PREVIEW: Samuel L Jackson's "Cold Space #4"

I got some preview pages here from the fourth and final issue of Cold Space, starring Sam L Jackson as interplanetary desperado Mulberry. here's the Sales Pitch:
From legendary actor Samuel L. Jackson and Emmy-nominee Eric Calderon (Afro Samurai)! The conflict between the warring factions has reached critical mass, and Mulberry wants his money! Will he survive the gang warfare? Will he get the hot chick? This is the comic finale of the year with Samuel L. Jackson’s stamp of approval, so don’t miss it! Covers by Dave Johnson and Jeffrey Spokes.

Sam L Jackson interview on CBR

After the jump i got some footage of Sam L Jackson (Unbreakable, Iron Man, Afro Samurai, Shaft, Pulp Fiction), breaking bread with CBR in a nice 2-part interview promoting his upcoming comic Cold Space, and generally showing everybody out there that he's the greatest man alive. In the interview, he breaks down his actual involvement in Cold Space, and how he got involved in the first place.

Wanna Watch The Black Panther Cartoon?

Everybody can stop being mad at the Australians... now we poor Americans can watch the new Black Panther cartoon too, thanks to the miracle of YouTube. The animation is more than a typical motion comic, but don't expect Afro Samurai. I thought it was pretty dope for what it was. I'll be tuning in... to y'know... YouTube... for anybody who hasn't read Reggie Hudlin's  Who Is the Black Panther trade already, this pretty closely follows the plot of the book.  They made some minor changes to the story, adding a couple scenes, for example. I was actually surprised a couple times. I think I'll go back and read it again while we're waiting on the next episode...
so anyways, what did you guys think?

Resurrection Director's Cut on DVD

yes, yes, ya'll! Afro Samurai: Resurrection - Director's Cut is available on DVD and Blu-ray here. "One brother, one path, a thousand deaths..."and it's DEFINITELY better than the original... COP IT!!!

NEW Designs from Sam L Jackson's comic COLD SPACE

I got some new character designs for you from Cold Space, the upcoming Sci-Fi comic co-written by Sam L Jackson and Eric Calderon (Afro Samurai). As you can see in this design by series artist Jeremy Rock, Sam L not only co-writes the comic, but also lends his famous face to the series' star and resident profiteering badass Mullberry! "Cold Space is simple because it’s just normal people trying to survive. It’s just the time and place that’s radically different,” Calderon explained in a recent interview.

PREVIEW: Sam Jackson's Cold Space

Sam Jackson's back as Mulberry, a space-faring loose cannon looking out for numero uno in his new comic Cold Space. He's co-writing with his Afro Samurai homie Eric Calderon, and they're putting it down pretty good in this space western type joint. Jackson's character doesn't appear much in this preview, but you'll get the point...

D. Original

here's the unreleased Afro Samurai pilot, leaked by that dude LeSean Thomas from the safety of his new digs in Seoul, Korea. The original Pilot was produced by MADHOUSE animation studios, and directed by Takeshi Koike (Animatrix: World Record, Dead leaves, Trava Fist Planet) in 2003. eventually, Samuel Jackson got hold of the film and TV rights to it, and as a result Spike TV tapped it for production by GONZO instead. the rest (as they say) is history.
