So Much Love In Just One Can #1
by Jay Moreno
A contemporary graffiti and street art coloring book for kids and bombed out black book for their adults. This book features work by Pose2, Sew, Sye, PRVRT, Zimad and many more. Kid's need to learn about graffiti from someone other than the status quo that teaches them it's an eyesore. 50% of the profit goes to Pose2's Graffiti: The Art Form Class and the tri-city B-Boy BBQ. Printing on acid free 80lb paper makes this book a cool, fun activity for a rainy day.

because "Boondocks Wasn't Hood Enough"

"I like Marcel Comix... kid's got some Hood Peanuts going on. The art is amateurish, but the writing is there. Give him 5 years of grind and he could have something.
Boondocks wasn't hood enough - it was like Spike Lee writing a comic. This kid's shit is like your cousin Malik writing the Boondocks."

Comicbook World #28

Okay, try to follow me... Comics writer Mark Sable writes a book for BOOM! Studios called Unthinkable about a government thinktank that comes up with worst-case terror scenarios. hyjinx ensue when they start to see those scenarios come true. so dude was detained at the airport by TSA, who read the script (for a company called BOOM!) and weren't sure what was real and what was fiction...

“The minute I saw the faces of the agents, I knew I was in trouble. The first page of the Unthinkable script mentioned 9/11, terror plots and the fact that the (fictional) world had become a police state. The TSA agents then proceeded to interrogate me, having a hard time understanding that a comic book could be about anything other than superheroes, let alone that anyone actually wrote scripts for comics.
“I cooperated politely and tried to explain to them the irony of the situation. While Unthinkable blurs the line between fiction and reality, the story is based on a real-life government think tank where a writer was tasked to design worst-case terror scenarios. The fictional story of Unthinkable unfolds when the writer’s scenarios come true, and he becomes a suspect in the terrorist attacks."
Dick Cheney would be so proud...

wish you had a healing factor like Wolverine, Telepathic skills like Professor X, or other superhuman powers? yeah, me too. but stuff like that doesn't happen in the REAL world, right? wrong! "The Real Superhumans" is a Science Channel joint about people who can do things that'll raise your eyebrow, cousin! i snatched this 90-minute special off youTube for the people, so you can see what's out there, and as you might expect the scientific community is on a quest to make superpowers available across the board (for a price, i'm sure!). after all, it's a comicbook world!

dope artwork can STILL sell the record!

okay, so my homegirl PeanutButterCookiez did this fly album cover for Rain All Day (click the pic to enlarge) by this hip hop crew called The Nope. the artwork was tight enough that i decided to listen to the song (which she had on her profile). so, after about 4 bars of finely tuned lyricism, i went to the group's profile for more, and before long i was on my blog, pasting together this post. so what's my point? listen to the snippets and if you are impressed like i was, go to The Nope's mySpace and listen to the songs for free (or buy 'em at amazon.com), and remind them that it all happened because they had DOPE artwork!

one of the downsides of being a freelancer is that you don't get sick days, so i've been drawing through my flu-like symptoms (which my doctor insures me are not Swine-Related) as much as possible, trying to knock out more pages and get to bed. i do take breaks to play with my daughter, watch teevee, read comics (and write reviews like this Kill Bill joint) etc. anyways, i made mad progress today, so yay me! So here's a couple panels from the comic i'm working on now. i'm about 2/3 finished with it, and completing pages much faster than when i started. as much as i appreciate the assignment (and the money!), i'll breath a big fat sigh of relief when it's done. it looks like i will be getting more work after this from the client, so i'm excited about the light i see at the end of this tunnel. oh well, i hope everyone had a good saturday! now i gotta get back to my orange juice and drawing board...

King City Returns this Summer

my clandestine sources have confirmed that Tokyopop and Image comics are ganging up to release Brandon Graham's KING CITY as twelve 32 page oversized books, starting on August 19th. Brando is one of the illest cats doing it right now... he's deep into hip hop and the influence is clear in his work. the first six issues will incorporate the Tokyopop released OGN i reviewed last year but of course, Brandon is sweetening the pot with added bonuses to woo people like me to buy them anyways!
The young do-it-all comicbook artist is a ninja about comics who works hard (he has at least one other comic Multiple Warhedz dropping this year), and surrounds himself with artists who are just as psycho about making comics as he is (his girlfriend is currently drawing a story arc of ElephantMen). man after my own heart... anyways, do yourself a favor and peep more about Brandon and King City here.

not HIS story, your story!

the term "graphic novel" is thrown around a lot these days. for some people, it's just a way to say "comic book" without feeling like a dork. although the term is generally held as a badge of legitimacy, in the case of Still I Rise, it doesn't do the book justice. for one thing, this joint isn't a novel at all, but a Graphic History of African Americans. from the infancy of the middle passage and slave trade to the election of that one dude as the first black President, Roland and Taneshia Nash Laird painstakingly plot out the 400+ year history of African America, and the rock-solid cartooning of Elihu "Adofo" Bey (Neverknots) will make sure you feel every bump along the way.
the authors use duel narrators with distinct perspectives to walk the reader through history with a broad view not skewed to just one narrow ideology. Bey's intelligent use of cartooning makes heavy ideas accessible and the book's humor lightens tough situations and moments without erasing their gravity. because the research and hard work of the writers and cartoonist covers so many topics, historical figures, and events (and makes it look effortless), this book will create or reawaken curiousity about black history in children and adults that read it. it will make you laugh, it will make you angry, and it will fill you with pride and hope. every african-american family, every library, and every comic book enthusiast should have a copy of this book. and when you get your copy, don't stash it on a musty shelf. put it on your coffee table... where it can do some good! as for me, the copy which the publisher was good enough to give me to review is going to my local public library, but not until i buy another one for my own coffee table.

Big Trouble in Tokyo

When a high-tech ninja from the Far East attacks Titans Tower, ROBIN, STARFIRE, CYBORG, RAVEN, and BEAST BOY spring into action and bring him down. But when Robin finds out the ninja was sent by a mysterious and menacing Japanese criminal known as BRUSHOGUN ... our heroes realize that the action isn't over -- it's just getting started. So the Titans pack their bags, hop in the T-Ship, and take off for Tokyo on mission to track down Brushogun -- and bring him to justice. But can our teenage heroes stay out of trouble in the City That Never Blinks? And can Robin solve the mystery of Brushogun before our villain takes down the Titans -- and destroys everything Robin is?

Zeb Wells (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN) and Diogenes Neves (X-MEN: WORLDS APART) bring your favorite teen heroes into adulthood. Don’t miss it!
