I can't help it! I'M GEEKING over PACIFIC RIM!

While my friends are all swooning over the Man of Steel trailer, I just want to see Guillermo Del Toro's giant-monster-versus-giant-robot opera Pacific Rim. But maybe that's just me...

The Sales Pitch:
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes -- a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) -- who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Does it help that Pacific Rim features Idris Elba as bad-ass robot pilot Stacker Pentecost? It sure as shit doesn't hurt. But the real draw for me is Guillermo Del Toro. I've enjoyed his visual style, effects philosophy, and sense of story on his original projects like Pan's Labyrinth, but felt he missed it a little on the Hellboy movies ... But the Hellboy comics are so perfect at being what they are... I don't even like to see anyone draw Hellboy except Mignola.

Del Toro is not the sort of storyteller who belongs on adaptations. He should be creating his own worlds (as he is on Pacific Rim), not trying to interpret someone else's visions. As I've said before, Del Toro is not a typical blockbuster-er, so it'll be fun to see him go balls-out on such a nerdcore wet dream.  Anyways, Pacific Rim is due out the summer of 2013, so I'm sure there will be more trailers and stuff between now and then, so stay tuned.

it does look pretty sweet!! i'm not usually into Del Toro's movies, the only one of his i really like is Hellboy 2, but i'm definitely interested in this. i love giant monsters and even though these ones look like CG instead of people in suits, the movie still looks great. man, i'm such a downer. XD

I was totally blown away! I'm not sure if I'll like it or not, but, blown away I was!

I must say, I didn't think Del Toro had it in him for a Brukheimer/Abrams world-wrecking blockbuster.

EXACTLY!

I'm not all that much of a summer blockbuster fan anymore, but I've found that my best chance to enjoy them is when unconventional directors take a stab at them.
