Comicbook World #33 Zombie Robot Armageddon, anyone?

Zombie Robot Armageddon, anyone?
because The Matrix did not scare the government enough, Pentagon contractors are working on steam-powered robots that could fuel themselves not on living humans' body heat like Smith an'em, but by eating our dead tissue. The EATRobot lives by gobbling up whatever "organic material" it can find — grass, wood, old furniture, or the flesh of the nonbelievers.

that new Rakim

Holy Are You by Rakim. word is that dude Rakim is returning from the wilderness this fall, but nah wit no stone tablets, but with a long-awaited new album The Seventh Seal. Judging from this first single, he's coming with that heat that made him famous in hipHop's glory days, not trying to blend in with what passes for dope rhyming these days. listen to the YouTube joint or click the pick to download the leak.

the MAYHEM continues Before it even STARTS...

here's the roughs Jim Lee (yeah, that Jim Lee) did for the Trade cover to Tyrese Gibson's new comic MAYHEM! no, you didn't miss anything, the first issue to the series doesn't hit stores until August 5th. so now you're probably wondering why Jim Lee is drawing the cover to the Trade collecting a series whose first issue isn't out yet. as Martin said in Bad Boys: "gettin' it outta the way..." Last month, i predicted that MAYHEM! #1 would be the highest-selling comic of the summer, due to Tyrese's multi-media marketing push, and it looks like i may be right:

according to an Image Comics press release, Tyrese's presales through LA's Meltdown Comics have exceeded single-store records not seen since the early nineties with over ten thousand units sold... most comics today would enjoy selling 10k total, and that's what MAYHEM! has moved through one store, in one city, before the book's release.
"The success of MAYHEM is a golden opportunity for all retailers to tap into this new influx of readers,” says Meltdown owner Gaston Dominguez. “Tyrese is a 2.0 celebrity who is a marketing workhorse and whose brand spans across movies, music, and TV... Believe me when I tell you that if Tyrese Twitters your store name you will get calls and in-store orders.” dude isn't frontin' either... i was online when Tyrese put one of the local stores in my area on blast because one of his fans told him his comicshop owner never heard of MAYHEM... the next thing you know he is asking them to STOP calling because the store is getting overwhelmed!

but if you think other creators at Image are salty at Tyrese for making them step their game up, think again. "With the current state of the comic book industry, any new infusion of excitement or customers would be a welcome relief" said Image co-founder and President Todd McFarlane. "Tyrese brings both of those to the table along with his unbridled enthusiasm." in fact, several big names are on Tyrese's bandwagon.

“To have the personal endorsements of Jim Lee, Avi Arad, Todd McFarlane, Robert Kirkman, Grant Morrison, and so many others…it just blows my mind." said Gibson in a press release. "I am excited to bring MAYHEM to the die-hard comic book fans, but I am most excited at this opportunity to expose this world to the new generation of comic book fans, who, like me until now have never read a comic book in their lives. They will find new heroes to embrace and enjoy escapism at it’s best! This is only the beginning…”
watching Tyrese learn the comics biz on the fly (then turn around and share what he's learning on Twitter) is amazing. i mean, this dude learned about comics by attending Comicon to promote Transformers, now he Kingpinnin' it! from what i can tell, he's cooking up more comics properties behind the scenes with all those big-name comics vets he's rubbing elbows with... but first thing's first! Mayhem! #1 drops August 5th. tell your comic shop to order you an issue, if you haven't already...

Girls Love Bad Boys... by Samax. click to enlarge
if you read my book Spontaneous (and if you're reading this, there's actually a chance that you did), you should recognize this character from his appearance in the freestyle comic from which that book gets its name. i started collecting my artwork yesterday and realized there is almost enough stuff to drop another book, so expect the long-awaited part two to drop within the next few months. of course, we gotta get the magazine done first... for those who have no idea what i'm talking about. go here for a ton of info on the book, or you can buy it on Amazon.com (but it's cheaper on IndyPlanet). orders made through my blog's sidebar will be signed by me, and you'll get an original sketch too. anyways, stay tuned for more info about the new book, and i hope you enjoy the artwork!

she's Rated R...

i got my copy of Rachel Rage:Heartland a couple weeks ago. everybody who's been reading this blog for a while has heard me go on and on about my anticipation of this blaxploitation-inspired tale by a creator who spells Revenge with a capital R (namely John Aston of OldeTowneComix). The ballsy grindhouse writer/artist was about as vulgar, lusty and violent as you can get in his previous book Abusilum, and for Rachel Rage he doesn't take his foot of the gas, he puts the pedal to the metal...

unlike a lot of indy guys, John understands what makes indies important to the artform and industry of comics. he makes a book that would not, and probably COULD NOT, be published at a major company or created by anyone else. Rachel Rage is not a parody of, or even a comment on the blaxploitation genre. it comes off like he was so affected by Pam Grier's body (of work i mean!) that it was only a matter of time before this book came out. not much time at all actually, as he wrote, drew, colored and lettered 176 pages of story in less than 8 months (a Herculean feat, i can tell you!). while i will not be so pretentious to suggest that he created an original book, i can easily promise you it is authentic. it's a comic that he made because he wanted to read it.
i can safely recommend Rachel Rage:Heartland to anybody that likes great crime stories, sexy revenge tales, or just wants to see a pecan-colored southern brickhouse chick totin' an AK-47 (who wouldn't!). You can order it in black and white on some recession-proof isht, or spend a few more bucks for the color joint with all the extra bells and whistles like i did (the "Junk in the Trunk" section has deleted scenes, promo artwork and other sweet stuff to go with your pecan pie!). either way, Rachel Rage:Heartland is on the summer's short list of things you gotta get by any means necessary.

Make What I Imagine Happen (but maybe i'm just a dreamer)

"I just think it was me and Damian finding our way." Nas said of his collaboration with Damian Marley on their upcoming LP Distant Relatives. "When you have two different artists working on a record when they're used to doing their own thing their own way, it's not as easy as people may think. We just flowed, and the next thing we looked up and there were so many songs done or so many songs started and worked on...we just decided to keep it going. It's not reggae. It's not rap. It's different shit for each of us."

Quote of the Day

"The external world is remarkably consistent, and yet we blame it for what's going on inside of us. People who think the world is going to end always manage to find a new thing that's going to cause it to end. People itching to be bummed out all day long will certainly find an external event that give their emotion some causal cover. The thinking happens long before the event that we blame the thinking on..." (read more)

it's been a rough summer. in what turns out to be just the latest celebrity death, Steve "Air" Mcnair was found shot to death in a condo in Nashville. i still don't know the circumstances of his death. McNair played quarterback in the NFL for 13 years, was a four-time Pro Bowler, and took the Tennessee Titans all the way to the Superbowl in 2000, where they fell just short to the high-powered St. Louis Rams 23-16. McNair, who retired after the 2008 season, was 36.
