here's the latest entry in the MF DOOM ART CONTEST by that dude DTM! if you think you know somebody that's a bonified jack-of-all-trades, Dan The Man to the roster, 'cause he's a master of multiple media! he took a minute to drop this DOOM piece in the email, so recognize the skills, fam!

here's a sneak peak at some work that will be appearing in upcoming issues of ghettoManga Quarterly. this page is from a 4-part story by indy comics phenom Stauff reppin' Pittsburgh, PA. he keeps busy doing all kinds of freelance work, but he's smashing on some new work for ghettoManga as well... i'll say more as the new issue (due out in July) approaches!
on the low, i'm working on a book called 100 Movies That Should Be Comics about movies that need to have their universes adapted in comics (instead of the other way around). well, i might hafta call it 99 Movies That Should Be Comics instead, 'cause Boom Studios has announced that it will publish a prequel to Die Hard as a comic book series titled Die Hard: Year One.
The prequel series, which drops in August, focuses on a young rookie McClane over a decade before the original Die Hard. set against the backdrop of the '76 Bicentennial Celebration, expect explosions, a high body count and a young J-mac droppin' the F bomb! this is the kind of thing that could help comics out a lot (and it wouldn't hurt the movie industry either!)...
I just read a DOOOPE article on African-American Comics publisher Bertram A Fitzgerald on the Museum of Uncut Funk Blog... peep:
DC Comics is bringing the Milestone Characters into their mainstream universe (i reserve judgement on that until i read some books), and to set the table, they are reprinting some of the original Milestone books in Trade Paperback format! the first horse out the gate is Dwayne McDuffie, John Paul Leon, and Robert Washington III's Static Shock: Rebirth of the Cool. i have no problem recommending Static, one of the best comics of it's time... you definitely need to cop this! Rebirth of the Cool drops today in stores everywhere.
looks like i been called in to DH again for ArtLoveMagic again this friday. we're backin' up HeadKrack & Fam (who i can vouch for) doin' the art ambiance for this joint. i will either bust out a big drawing or painting (i haven't decided) and i'll have books and other swag for the people. i just got added to the show today, so if you in Dallas, click the flyer for info and govern yourself accordingly! it's been a minute since i been to a hardcore rap show, so it oughta be a blast!
Street Fighter II Turbo #6 In stores NOW!Check out preview pages here!
Hot Fries by Mike Lagocki.
When indy comicbook artist Darnell Kirnon (Kids from the Ghetto, Inner City Blues) sent me his entry for the MF DOOM ART CONTEST, he said "I can't decide which one i like better" so I entered 'em both! feel free to identify the one you like the best...
if you're in the mood for a romantic comedy that's heavier on the comedy than the romance, check out a hilarious comic called The Dog Years! when Trey, a twenty something toy designer, suffers a catastrophic break-up from his slightly overbearing (and more than slightly hot) fiance, his boys swoop in, determined to stop the pity-party before it even starts. once he hooks up with his boy, the crazy-as-hell dread Rasheed, you know something's about to jump off!
Writer/Artist Drayonis has created a prototype for a great cable show with a cast of characters any sitcom would be happy to have. The art is strong and he writes with a good balance of dating philosphy and comedy that's not afraid to be raunchy when appropriate. the main character's boys seem stereotypical at times, but each one finds his own voice. although the book spends a lotta time on the boys' attempts to drag Trey over to the dark side, the book offers ample coverage of the women's side of the battle of the sexes too! with all the comedy and sexual punch this book flaunts (Drayonis sure can draw some fine women... DAMN!), it also has some effective depth, which was a pleasant surprise. while we can expect to see the books printed eventually, Drayonis has 5 issues (with #6 on the way) of The Dog Years available to read free online... i suggest you do so, and feel free to let us know what you think!
my boy Jamar Nicholas (Detective Boogaloo, Jamar Chronicles, Asteroid Girl) knew all about MF DOOM before i ever heard of 'im. an' even though the number one Illyphunksta's too busy working on the graphic novel adaptation to Fist Stick Knife Gun and just generally being awesome to enter the contest, he emailed me this vintage DOOM piece he drew circa '03. he said it wasn't for the MF DOOM ART CONTEST, but i entered it anyways, (like my middle school art teacher Mr. Gomez would have) 'cause i got it like that! everybody working on somethin' be advised...
Tyrese Gibson’s MAYHEM begins on the streets of Los Angeles, wherein a brutal crime wave led by the mysterious Big X has the entire city in a state of perpetual fear. With even the police force unable to stop him, MAYHEM, a faceless vigilante with only his partner Malice and an unrelenting vengeance to back him up, strikes back against the criminal hordes. Within three issues of non-stop action, they will take on Big X to dismantle his organization and restore peace to the City of Angels. (read more, and preorder here)
it's about time... well it's ALMOST about time. the long-awaited Chali 2na solo album Fish Outta Water is finished. after the inevitable break-up of beloved underground rap crew Jurassic 5 in '07 (i musta missed it) and judo-style arm-wrestlin' to get away from Interscope, the Baratone Bomber is ready to drop that joint next month (June 23rd) on Decon, already known for working with Dilated Peoples, Aceyalone, and Evidence. anyways, the new joint will have likes of Anthony Hamilton, Choklate, Elzhi, Beenie Man and Junior Gong & Stephen Marley riding longside ya boy 2na. for now, peep Lock Shit Down f/Talib Kweli.
yo, here's another entry in the MF DOOM ART CONTEST from that dude Charlie Fab (Blackbird)! so far, cats are slammin' down the gauntlet, so if you're gonna have a shot at that Ben Franklin, you're gonna hafta come strong! but don't waste time! all entries need to be in by June 15th!
i just finished reading this great biography of Malcolm X yesterday. not being a Muslim myself, i still can't see how any black person (especially a black man) can resist feeling a swell of pride at the mention of Malcolm. He remains one of the strongest examples of black masculinity ever seen in American culture, and the arc of his public persona across the length of his career is fasciniating. the way he changes his position on race based on his pilgrimage to Mecca stands as an example of how one should react when confronted with the truth.
click the pic to see an ill collection devoted to that mushroom cloud layin' muthaf*cka Jules from Pulp Fiction. these joints had me DYING, so i just HAD to share, fam!
that dude Jeremy Biggers is back again with another one o' these hand-painted (yeah, i said HAND PAINTED!) fitteds, this time featuring NBA MVP Lebron James. sweat him hard enough and he'll do you one, but he don't repeat himself, so you can't have the same image on your lid unless the one shown here hasn't sold yet (yeah, right!).
i'm happy to announce that the next issue of ghettoManga Quarterly will have a sweet article featuring everybody's favorite supervillain, the mighty MF DOOM! to commemorate this joyous occasion, i've decided to run an MF DOOM ART CONTEST!
(yeah, that's me rocking the authentic Jungle45 tee!)

"I like Marcel Comix... kid's got some Hood Peanuts going on. The art is amateurish, but the writing is there. Give him 5 years of grind and he could have something.
Okay, try to follow me... Comics writer Mark Sable writes a book for BOOM! Studios called Unthinkable about a government thinktank that comes up with worst-case terror scenarios. hyjinx ensue when they start to see those scenarios come true. so dude was detained at the airport by TSA, who read the script (for a company called BOOM!) and weren't sure what was real and what was fiction...
wish you had a healing factor like Wolverine, Telepathic skills like Professor X, or other superhuman powers? yeah, me too. but stuff like that doesn't happen in the REAL world, right? wrong! "The Real Superhumans" is a Science Channel joint about people who can do things that'll raise your eyebrow, cousin! i snatched this 90-minute special off youTube for the people, so you can see what's out there, and as you might expect the scientific community is on a quest to make superpowers available across the board (for a price, i'm sure!). after all, it's a comicbook world!
okay, so my homegirl PeanutButterCookiez did this fly album cover for Rain All Day (click the pic to enlarge) by this hip hop crew called The Nope
that dude Tres of Come Bien Books did us a solid and copped this ghettoManga Logo Hoodie, and just to show what a cool cat he is, sent me this pic he took while rockin' it in NYC. aside from having exquisite fashion sense, Tres is a comicbook and graf artist reppin' the mighty TYS Collective (NYC-Cali STAND UP!). dude manages many hustles in the spirit of ghettoManga, and we mos definitely appreciate the love. for more of our coverage of Tres' Come Bien Books, go here. and make sure you visit the Come Bien mySpace spot too, homey! now, i'm not sayin' rockin' a ghettoManga hoodie will make you as fly as Tres... but it couldn't hurt! COP THAT!

here's a link to a SoCal hip hop group called E.A.R.T.H.
one of the downsides of being a freelancer is that you don't get sick days, so i've been drawing through my flu-like symptoms (which my doctor insures me are not Swine-Related) as much as possible, trying to knock out more pages and get to bed. i do take breaks to play with my daughter, watch teevee, read comics (and write reviews like this Kill Bill joint) etc.
anyways, i made mad progress today, so yay me! So here's a couple panels from the comic i'm working on now. i'm about 2/3 finished with it, and completing pages much faster than when i started. as much as i appreciate the assignment (and the money!), i'll breath a big fat sigh of relief when it's done. it looks like i will be getting more work after this from the client, so i'm excited about the light i see at the end of this tunnel. oh well, i hope everyone had a good saturday! now i gotta get back to my orange juice and drawing board...

my clandestine sources have confirmed that Tokyopop and Image comics are ganging up to release Brandon Graham's KING CITY as twelve 32 page oversized books, starting on August 19th. Brando is one of the illest cats doing it right now... he's deep into hip hop and the influence is clear in his work. the first six issues will incorporate the Tokyopop released OGN i reviewed last year but of course, Brandon is sweetening the pot with added bonuses to woo people like me to buy them anyways!
