Malik Matthews was not much of a man, and when he gets superpowers, he's not much of a superhero, either. But the origin/debut episode of Black Angus -the low budget webseries that will follow the exploits of this plain-clothes crime fighter- is a hilarious parody of superhero tropes seasoned with hip hop style and irreverence.

Breaking the first two rules of FIGHT CLUB 2...

Some movies are just SCREAMING to be made into comics, and we at GhettoManga love to see screenwriters, actors and novelists using the relatively cheap and elastic medium of comics to expand on the interesting worlds and characters we know from films. To that end, FIGHT CLUB author Chuck Palanhiuk has wisely chosen our favorite storytelling medium to bring us more of his most famous story. When Top Cow dropped this inventive action thriller written by Marc Bernardin & Adam Freeman and Illustrated by Afua Richardson last summer, they couldn't have known how much police brutality, urban protests movements, gang truces, and violent uprisings would dominate the media for the next year. But even if it's coincidental, that doesn't make GENIUS any less timely now that the trade paperback is in stores.

I saw this cover to The Tithe #2 on the stands when I wandered into my comic shop late Wednesday evening, and after being welcomed by the familiar quote from the Old Testament book of Malachi (the one about giving offerings), I couldn't resist its charms. On one side of The Tithe we follow the Samaritans, a band of tech-savvy crusaders who rob Mega-churches of the loot they fleece from their followers. On the other, FBI agent Dwayne Campbell (above) and his task force are trying to catch them.

The second-to-last issue Greg Pak's STORM solo comic is in stores now. And it looks AWESOME!

Okay, so STORM is definitely going away after issue twelve, along with a bunch of other books ahead of the big Marvel Secret Wars thing (don't ask...). I'm not sure if the plan is to bring STORM back for a new number one, but I know my vote...

I got a dm last night from the mighty LeSean Thomas confirming that production has officially started (in Japan, of course) on his hip hop flavored action-adventure animated series Cannon Busters.

In past decades, artists like Wu-tang, MF DOOM and Can Ox opened a pandora's box to a whole world of cats who channel the energy of the streets through hip hop, cartoons, comics and cult movies. GhettoManga is here largely to chronicle the fallout from that explosion, since mainstream outlets have lost interest. Slim Pickens aka Iron Helmet perfectly exemplifies that strain of underground hip hop anti-heroism. Peep...

I bought a copy of Aida, a hardcover children's book by Leontyne Price and illustrated by Leo and Diane Dillon, a while back at Half-Price Books as an art nerd/good dad impulse buy, but never read it. Last night my six year old daughter fished it out of her tub o' books for some bedtime reading, and we nestled up and gave it a go.
