the original brickhouse chick, blaxploitation star Pam Grier turns 61 today.
Raise your glasses or lighters, tip your hat, or just flash a thumbs up for actress and icon Pam Grier, who celebrates her 61st birthday today, May 26th. There are certainly many lovely ladies to grace the silver screen over the decades, but for my money, no one ever lit it up like Pam Grier. Pam became a household name in the 70s for starring in a string of blaxploitation films, most notably the classic genre pictures Coffy and Foxy Brown. Grier is recognized by many as the first female action star, and one of the greatest to ever do it. These two films alone inspired black female action stars in film, comics, television, and music for decades.
After playing many small roles in the 80's (yeah, she WAS Segal's partner in Above The Law) Grier returned to big-screen prominence in the title role of Quentin Tarantino's 1997 film Jackie Brown, for which she received Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Satellite nominations for Best Actress. Since then, the actress has stayed busy most notably playing Kit Porter on Showtime's The L Word (and looking DAMN good doing it), as well as recurring roles on Law & Order: SVU and Smallville (as Amanda Waller).
Anyways, if you're reading this Pam, Happy Birthday!
