that dude Rory on artJumble posted this blaxploitation version of the nunchuckin' Thundercat Panthro that i just HAD to share with my ghettoManga people! feel free to talk amongst yourselves...
Snake Eyes final art by ~MisterHardtimes . i haven't seen the new GI JOE flick yet, even though many of my friends said i should. i can honestly say, I'm just not interested. however, lest that be taken as a slight against the coolest character in the JOEniverse, i posted a picture of my #1 man in black (with due respect to Will Smith and Johnny Cash) Snake Eyes drawn by that dude Mike Hawthorne (Hysteria, GI JOE:ORIGINS). while i admit that my original queeziness about the film is probably misplaced, i loved the Warren Ellis penned GI JOE:RESOLUTE cartoon on Adult Swim, and watching it absorbed all the enthusiasm i had for seeing the Real American Heroes on screen... now if someone will convince America to start releasing animated features like that on the big screen in the states... THAT'D be worth the trip to the theater!
Here's one ya might like about a mic and a man..."
while i was in deep ellum last night, I ran into Patrick Favors (left), the drummer for Dem Southernfolkz, an eclectic hip hop soul group playing a show at Liquid Lounge. man, these cats are ridiculous! this video for "The Message" (which features Skinny Deville from Nappy Roots) was shot in Art Park, the same place where I was hard at work repainting one of the statues. i'm not finished with my piece yet, but i'll post pics when it's done... anyways, it's funny i ran into dude while working on my piece. he was really proud of this group's music and when he let me hear some of it on his i-phone, i understood why. isht was bangin' for real, so when i got home i had to peep it...
so this week has been pretty eventful... i had a photoshoot with Dallas free newspaper The Quick for an interview they will be running about me (next week, i think), and being the silly sonuvagun i am, i scheduled it to be at my local comic shop, so i could pick up the first issue of Brandon Graham's gonzo urban fantasy King City and indulge in the ego-stroking exercise of the photoshoot all in one shot! to get the full ghettoManga experience, you should buy the issue, then download Brandon's free Inkstuds Mixtape (featuring classic joints from Rakim, KRS ONE, and Jadakiss) for background listenin' while you read... sweet! i find it hard to see how anyone could pass up on a massive comic for 2.99 if you ALSO throw in a free mixtape with it!
i also grabbed my copy of Wet Moon Volume 5: Where All Stars Fail to Burn
master cartoonist LeSean Thomas is leaving the U.S. for a job at JM Animation in Korea on September 3rd. JM is responsible for animation on shows like Avatar: The Last Air Bender, Wonderful Days, Fist of the North Star, Noein, Macross Zero, Hellsing, Count of Monte Cristo, and is currently producing Season 3 of The Boondocks.
While it is not uncommon for foreign artists to work overseas in Korean animation studios because they are usually attached to an existing project from said country, this situation is unique because LeS is the first American to be plucked from the states to be hired specifically to work in-house at a Korean animation studio. "It’s exciting, but at the same time also a lot of pressure. However I’m confident that I will do my best... Hopefully I wont be the last..."
"Angels On Our Shoulder" was designed by Billy Nuñez aka biz02 for a friend's tattoo. one of the things that kept me from wanting a tat is the idea that i would get it and then not like the design anymore. but Nunez broke his foot off in this design, crafting something so fly, i think i'd still be proud of it years later. it's gonna sting something awful, but whoever gets this is gonna love flashing it at folks!

that dude Felipe Smith (MBQ, Peepo Choo) checks in to briefly speak on his new book and life as a comicbook artist in Japan... in case you missed it, click the pic for my previous post about our favorite Jamaican-Argentinian-American wandering Samurai! i figured some of y'all would enjoy getting the uncut real from the horse's mouth! (if you're reading this Felipe: GET BACK TO WORK! lol!)
Remember Felipe Smith, ghettoManga Award-Winning writer/artist of MBQ? he's in Tokyo, Japan... DRAWING his TAIL off! as i told you before, after completing MBQ, Felipe bounced over to the Land of the Rising Sun to draw his parody manga Peepo Choo for the monthly Japanese anthology magazine Morning Two. now the first two full volume collections have been completed and dropped in stores! so while we were sleeping, dude has broken off not one but two 200-page volumes, and shows no signs of slowing down!
yes, your math is right... Felipe has drawn 405 pages of comics in one year! more pages than there's days on the calendar (even in leap year), in case you're wondering!

the blastmaster KRS ONE turns 44 today. widely recognized as one of hip hop's father figures, the teacher is an accomplished speaker and activist, as well as being well able to serve your favorite emcee on any given night. although the outspoken emcee is often a willing subject of controversy, he has always used his notoriety as a platform for non-violence and the spread and veneration of true-school hip hop culture. where ever you're at when you read this, tip your hat for the Philospher...
here's another 5-page preview of Invincible (#65, courtesy of the fine folks at CBR) which features a heartfelt moment between Invincible and his girlfriend Atom Eve. ole boy's in a sling after last-issue's battle royale (you should see the other guy), and apparently this issue is primarily gonna be a pause in the action for the writer-artist team of Kirkman and Ottley to tally up all the characters they offed in the world-smashing Conquest story arc. click the pic for a peek at the best superhero comic in the Universe, people (you'll know what i meant by that title once you read the preview)!
for all you trendy bastards who only buy graphic novels, the fifth volume of Ross Campbell's girl on girl masterpiece Wet Moon is in comic shops right now! you won't find a better showcase for college girls of every shape, color and size who like comics, drawing, and each other... and honestly, ghettoManga Award-winning cartoonist Ross Campbell is a singular talent who can draw anything, and has a mastery of visual storytelling that most of us take years to achieve! get Wet Moon Volume 5:Where All Stars Fail To Burn asap! if you wanna start at the beginning first, go here.

having completed the landmark all-ages romp Wizard of Oz for Marvel, Skottie Young has found it is time to move on... to The Marvelous Land of Oz. after the success of Young's foray into the Land of Oz, Marvel saw fit to let it ride, allowing Young to keep the party going.
the magnificent Dawn Okoro got some new teeshirts cookin' in the kitchen and she's taking preorders now! it's based on Okoro's painting Unconscionability and is screen printed on American Apparel ladies' fine jersey shirts. to preorder a fresh shirt from one of my favorite young painters, head over to DawnOkoro.com and get familiar!
that dude GoldiGold's workin' on a new Michael Vick joint, which will grace the cover of Brothers Perspective Magazine, according to a tweet exchange we had while we were both up late drawing (not a rare occurrence). keep your eyes peeled, and i'll post the final art and more info when i have 'em!
Here’s that new track by Murs & Slug (known together as Felt), Protagonists. the last time i peeped them together, was when they dropped Felt 2:a Tribute to Lisa Bonet, alongside Jim Mahfood's Felt2, a comics adaptation of the album (cover shown here). i haven't heard about another synchronized release, but hopefully they do it again for the people! what i do know is that Felt 3 will be a tribute to another famous female who's fallen off (whose identity hasn't been revealed yet). anyways, peep this joint off Felt 2 complete with Food artwork...
much thanks to all the cool people i met at Dallas Comicon! i had a great time a sold lots of artwork. now, it's back to the drawing board for me! as you know, i always need new hip hop to fill the background of my drawing hours, so here's The Undergods' (Keith Murray & Canibus) new track Show & Prove ft. Crooked I i've added to my playlist, courtesy of the fine folks at NahRight.com.
in totally unrelated news for all my Invincible fans, apparently there's a Rex Plode mini in the works with art by Nate Bellegarde (Atom Eve)! here's a kewl drawing of Rex's arm explosion-making t'ings from Nate's sketchbook... i haven't tracked down any real info on this, i just stumbled onto it in my browsing. when i have a minute, i'll check into it more and get back to you! for now, i gotta get back on my art grind! holla at ya'll later!
I had a blast at Dallas Comicon today! I didn't get a chance to get up and visit any of my friends' tables because we were super busy all day! it has been fun getting back into conventions, and this was the best one i've done in a while! here's a few pieces that were updated for this con. i had several prints leftover from previous shows, so with the new pieces i added, i had a good variety.
i did some fan art, some of my own characters, and some non-comics stuff. i've found that people appreciate that you draw stuff other than comics... puts it in perspective, i guess! i wish the new issue of ghettoManga Quarterly had been ready(sigh), but it was still a great show.
"Samax's GhettoManga umbrella is one of our favorite local outfits; a quarterly print publication, mix-tape purveyor and nonstop blog that artfully blends comicbook and hip-hop culture like so much chocolate and peanut butter."
me and my boy copped some free passes to a sneak preview showing of the new documentary style sci-fi joint District 9 produced by that dude Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings,King Kong) and directed by his protege Neill Blomkamp. the film takes place in Johannesburg, South Africa where an alien ship has been hovering for twenty years, and the shiftless aliens inside have been relocated from the dormant ship to the alien superghetto, District 9. you can read my SPOILER-FREE full review here, but the short version is if you really prefer pure popcorn movies for the whole fam, have sensitive ears (or stomach), have a short attention span or are easily offended, SKIP IT and go see GI JOE or something... everyone else should RUN out to see District 9 before your friends spoil it for you! District 9 opens in wide release August 14th.
that dude Skottie Young (a comicbook artist in the hallowed ghettoManga tradition) has finally dropped a new art book! Junk is a 298 pages full color hardcover with a little of everything from doodles to final pieces. all you process junkies get to see the stages of this art ninja's work, from thumbnail to final color. and if you're thinking of sweating your comic shop or bookstore to get it, don't even GO there... this joint is an online exclusive, beyotch! click the pic to preview and order that joint fam! for more samples of his art on some try-before-you-buy-type-isht, peep his blog at SkottieYoung.com!
well, not in person, but i will have a piece of art in the Mano A Mano art show SuperHeroes vs Villains next month. the show will feature work by a gang of fresh artists (including DTM, Andre Moore, Chanson Presley, and myself... peep the flier!), plus dope sounds of DJ Osmose and more activities... so if you're in the area September 11th, feel free to drop by and dig the scene, fam!
here's a pin up i did for my friend Cal Slayton. it started as a quick sketch, but most of what you see was done with photoshop. shown here is Jack Brannon, the star of Cal's retro horror graphic novel Spookytown. if you like it, go check out Cal's work here. he's good and stuff! i will have prints of this with me at Dallas Comicon next weekend. Cal will be there too, and he always brings lots of cool stuff. if you can't come but still want to buy a copy of this, I should have them available by the end of the week to purchase online. this piece will almost certainly be in the next volume of Spontaneous when it comes out late this year. so anyways, hope y'all like it...

One of my Art Jumble peeps posted this joint for this week's sketch topic 'Super Mario'. looks like that dude Leo from ninja turtles is not feelin' how Mario jacks turtles for coins. i'd like to see that fight!
props to my man M.Mcelhaney, because we both been scouring the internet for this. he made sure to let me know when he found it! enjoy the bootleg greatness while it lasts!
artist/animator Dave Pryor drew this moody yet fun piece The Prisoner because the challenge of drawing a maze in perspective sounded like a ton of fun to him (yeah, artists are weird), but also to make a statement about life: "Be careful of the choices you make, because right around the corner there might be a bear with a bat waiting to beat the crap out of you." wiser words were never said, brother...
there is zero action in this 5-page preview to the redundantly titled Ultimate Comics Avengers #1, but if you're like me, you may find it valuable for info purposes. i mean, it won't explain why Marvel decided to reboot its entire line of Ultimate books, or why they decided to turn ultimate Hawkeye into ultimate Grifter, but i did learn that Mark Millar is back writing the Ulitimate Universe's premier super-team, this time 'longside veteran penciler Carlos Pacheco (Avengers Forever). click the pic to find out why they're bringin' number one negro Nick Fury out the crates to lead a black ops... er um, covert team of heroes against one of the Ultimates who went rogue (and why). i have no intention at all of buying this comic, but it does look like it will be pretty good... may get the trade when it drops!
Eighties popcorn movie giant John Hughes (National Lampoon’s Vacation, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, European Vacation, Weird Science, Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Planes Trains & Automobiles, Uncle Buck, Christmas Vacation, Home Alone)died today of a heart attack. RIP dude...
